HULSTEIN, WILMER AND ADELLA (JUFFER)
Wilmer and Adella Hulstein have lived in the larger Sioux Center community all their lives. Their three children have adopted the area as well. Anne arrived in February of 1966; Jane followed in June, 1969; and Jon came in November, 1971. The Hulsteins farm 3 miles west of Sioux Center.
Wilmer was bom April 1, 1937 to Gerrit and Helen Hulstein and was raised on a farm 4½ miles west of town. He attended Plato #8 country school until his high school years at S.C.H.S. Early childhood memories include neighbourhood threshing bees and the 1944 tornado which did extensive damage to their farm. Gerrit sponsored several Dutch immigrants who worked on their farm. Communicating in two languages taught the new Americans to speak English and the family to take on some Dutch words.
On September 13, 1939, Adella was born to Wilmer and Jeanette Juffer. She attended Sioux Center Public Schools. As a child, in town, she remembers a lot of neighbourhood sharing. and activity. A somber memory recalls the frequent black out warnings during W.W. II, followed by church bells rung when the war ended. A happy memory is the Saturday night treat, a flavored pint of ice cream that Bill brought home after stores closed. Bill owned and managed Sioux Feed between 1946 and 1965.
Wilmer and Adella were married March 5, 1960. As in past generations, weather was often the determiner of the good and the not as good years. In addition to farm work, and church and school activities, their family also enjoys travelling and camping.
Now Anne is pursuing her C.P.A. degree, taking time out occasionally for some work experience. Jane married Dave Vander Waal Oct.23, 1987. They have 2 sons, Dustin and Derek. Jon is attending college.
