Obituaries of Shirley and Darrell

Sioux Center News; July 26, 2006

Shirley Joyce Hartman, 68, of Maurice died Thursday, July 20, at the Mercy Medical Center of Sioux City. Funeral services were Monday at First Reformed Church of Maurice at 10:30 a.m. Interment was at the Sherman Township Cemetery of Maurice.

Mrs. Hartman was born January 23, 1938, to Cornelius and Elizabeth (Vermeer) Hulstein at Hawarden. Her family settled near Sioux Center where she attended school. On August 8, 1957, she married Darrell Gene Hartman in Sioux Center. They made their home in Amarillo, Texas, and later In Maurice where Shirley worked at the Million Dollar Lunch and the Maurice Cafe. Over the years she had been active with the Maurice Booster Club and assisted with the Maurice Centennial celebration. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and outdoor activities. She looked forward to the camping season each year, when she and Darrell would spend time at Yankton or the Lakes. She also was an active collector of porcelain dolls.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Darrell; three daughters, Clara, Bonnie and Pamela; a son, Jeff; nine grandchildren; a sister, Cornelia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Gerrit Hulstein, Raymond Hulstein, Edward Hulstein, Harold Hulstein and an infant brother; and three sisters, Gertrude Brunsting, Esther Lems and infant sister.

Darrell Hartman, 73, of Maurice, IA died Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 10:30AM at First Reformed Church of Maurice, IA. Interment will follow the service in Sherman Township Cemetery of Rural Maurice.

Darrell Gene Hartman was born March 16, 1937 to William and Bernice (Whitmeier) Hartman at Le Mars, IA. Darrell attended grade school in Le Mars and graduated from Pierson High School.

On August 8, 1957 he was united in marriage to Shirley Hulstein in Sioux Center. Darrell and Shirley were blessed with four children. They made their home in Amarillo, TX, from 1957-1961, while Darrell served in the United States Air Force. The couple later moved to Maurice, IA where Darrell drove truck for many years. Darrell worked as a dispatcher from 1980 until his retirement in 2008.

Over the years, Darrell had been active with the Maurice Booster Club and assisted with the Maurice Centennial celebration. Darrell loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing and outdoor activities. He looked forward to the camping season each year, when he and Shirley would spend time at Yankton or the Lakes. Darrell also was an active collector of toy trucks and enjoyed woodworking.

Left to cherish his memory are three daughters: Clara, Bonnie and Pamela; a son, Jeff; twelve grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Darrell is also survived by a sister, Jackie; brother, Jerry and numerous nieces and nephews.

Darrell was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Shirley Hartman; his parents and one brother, Bill Hartman.
