Gerrit "Fred" Frederick Hulstein, 91, Rock Rapids, died Sat. Oct. 8, at Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids.

Services were Tues. Oct. 11, at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, with the Revs. Dan Hagger and Katie Van Veldhuizen officiating. Burial was at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.

Fred Hulstein, son of Conrad and Grace (Van Maanen) Hulstein, was born Sept. 6, 1914, in Carmel, Iowa. He grew up in Carmel, where he graduated from the eighth grade at Welcome No. 4 township school east of Carmel, where the Hulstein name was alive in that school for 60 years.

He married Johanna Vander Linden on Feb. 24, 1939, in Rock Valley. He farmed in the Carmel area 1939-1940, and the Rock Rapids area 1940-1975. They built a new home in 1975 and retired in Rock Rapids. Mrs. Hulstein died Dec. 3, 1980. He married Agnes Koel on April 30, 1983 in Rock Rapids. They moved to Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Rock Rapids in 2003.

He was a hard worker and dedicated his life to farming and to his family. He was a lifelong member of First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, where he served as a deacon. He helped build the present sanctuary of the church in 1953. He volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels. His hobbies included fishing and playing cards.

He enjoyed traveling in his camper when he retired.

Survivors include three children, Leona and Gilbert Vanden Top of Rock Rapids, Ronald and Elaine Hulstein of Juneau, AK, and David and Cheryl Hulstein of Rock Rapids; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; eight sisters, Carolyn De Kam of Rock Valley, Etta Baker of Rock Valley, Emma Vogel of Slayton, MN, Gertrude Vonk of Mountain Lake, MN, Viola Langfeldt of Rock Rapids, Minerva Vander Streek of Rock Rapids, Winerva Hulstein of Sioux Center, and Myna Nyhof of Sioux Center, and a sister-in-law, Artie Hulstein.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Johanna Hulstein; a granddaughter, Mary Jo Hulstein; a sister, Myna Hulstein; and a brother, Albertus Hulstein.
