Obituaries of Etta and Bert

Etta was born December 2, 1919 near Carmel, IA, daughter of Conrad and Grace (Van Maanen) Hulstein.

She married Bert Baker on September 28, 1945 at Rock Rapids, IA. Together they farmed south of Rock Valley then in 1960 west of Canton, SD. Bert and Etta retired to Rock Valley in April of 1982.

Etta died Friday, October 26, 2007 at Sanford USD Health Center, Sioux Falls, SD. She was 87 years, 10 months, and 25 days of age.

Etta is survived by her husband, Bert; sons, Walter (Carol) Baker and Conrad (Linda) Baker all of Canton, Gene Baker of Centerville, SD; daughter, Jane (Carl) Kienast of Centerville, SD; sisters, Carolyn DeKam of Rock Valley, twin sister, Emma (John) Vogel of Slayton, MN, Gertrude Vonk of Mountain Lake, MN, Viola (William) Langfeldt of Rock Rapids, IA, Minerva (Gerrit John) Vander Streek of Rock Rapids, Winerva Hulstein of Sioux Center, Myna (Leonard) Nyhof of Sioux Center, IA; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Gerrit Fredrich Hulstein and Albertus John Hulstein; sister, Mina Hulstein.

Bert Baker, 91, of Canton, formerly of Rock Valley, died Friday January 6, 2011 at Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center. Funeral Service will be 2 pm Tuesday at Netherlands Reformed Congregation, Rock Valley. Burial at Valley View Cemetery. Rev. P. L. Bazen officiating. Visitation Monday with family present 6:30-8 pm at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

Bert was born June 28, 1920 at NW of Alvord, IA, son of Walter and Jennie (Van Den Berg) Baker. Bert married Etta Emma Hulstein on September 28, 1945 at Rock Rapids, IA. Together they farmed south of Rock Valley until moving west of Canton. They retired from farming and moved to Rock Valley in April of 1982. Bert helped John Harmelink and the Rock Valley Hay Sale Company. Etta died October 26, 2007. Bert later moved to Hiawatha Heights Assisted Living near Canton.

Survivors include sons, Walter (Carol) Baker, Conrad (Linda) Baker all of Canton, Gene Baker of Centerville, SD; daughter, Jane Kienast of Centerville, SD; 8 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerrit (Joanne) Baker of Doon, IA; sister-in-law, Anna Marie Baker of Rock Valley.

Bert was preceded in death by his wife, Etta; son-in-law, Carl Kienast; brother, Peter Baker.

Obituaries of Carl and Jane

Carl Walter Kienast was born July 6, 1931 in Centerville, SD to parents Walter and Laura (Wenk) Kienast. He died June 30, 2011 at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 24 days.

Carl attended Euclid country school and graduated from Centerville High School in 1949. After graduating he worked for Everett Snoozy and Delmer Peterson. He worked at Truck Towne Café and Conklin’s family Restaurant from 1984 to 1998 and then worked at Fireball in Centerville from 1998 to his retirement in January of 2008.

Carl married Jane Baker on January 10, 1986 in Beresford. The couple resided in Centerville. Carl loved music and played the accordion among other instruments. He enjoyed listening to the Old Time Fiddlers and liked to go fishing. He will be missed by all his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Jane of Centerville; sister Marge Peterson and husband Palmer of Viborg; 3 brothers-in-law, Walter Baker and wife Carol of Canton, Conrad Baker and wife Linda of Canton, and Gene Baker of Centerville; father-in-law, Bert Baker of Canton and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents and his mother-in-law, Etta Baker.

Funeral services will be held 2:00PM, Wednesday, July 6 at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery, rural Centerville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3PM to 8PM with family present from 6PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville.

Jane Arlene Kienast was born October 12, 1957 in LeMars, IA to parents Bert and Etta (Hulstein) Baker. She died July 8, 2015 at the Morningside Care Center in Alcester, SD at the age of 57 years, 8 months and 26 days.

Jane lived in Rock Valley, IA until the age of three when the family moved to a farm near Canton, SD in 1960. She attended Kerley District #23 country school. She then attended school in Canton and graduated from Canton High School in 1975. Jane was employed as a cook in several area restaurants, including Conklins, Truck Towne, Silver Dollar, Emily’s, Stone Hearth, and Coop One Stop. She lived in Canton, Beresford, Centerville, Sioux Falls and Alcester.

Jane married Carl W. Kienast on January 10, 1986 in Beresford. They lived in Centerville for over 25 years. Carl died in 2011.

Among her hobbies and interests were fishing with Carl and traveling. She will be missed by all her family and friends.

She is survived by her three brothers, Walter Baker and wife Carol, Canton, SD, Conrad Baker and wife Linda, Canton, SD and her twin brother Gene, Centerville; sister-in-law Marge Peterson and husband Palmer, Viborg; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
