Obituary of Viola

Viola Arvilla (Hulstein) Langfeldt was born on Sunday; July 15, 1928 at Carmel; Sioux County, Iowa. She was the daughter of: Conrad and Grace (Van Maanen) Hulstein. Viola attended country school and at the age of 14 years she moved to Rock Rapids with her family. She continued her country school education and graduated from the 8th grade in May of 1942. She attended Alvord High School one year, and then graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1946. She received her Normal Training Certificate and taught in a country school for 4 years.

On November 22, 1948 she was united in marriage to Adrain Delfs. Five children were joined to this union. They moved to a farm northwest of Rock Rapids. In November of 1958 they moved into Rock Rapids where Viola worked as a substitute teacher for Central Lyon Public School. She sold Avon for 22 years and worked for Lane's Café for 20 years. In March of 1972 she attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. In 1974 she worked at Hogan Construction Company.

In 1975 she married Orville Nagel. After 5 years of marriage, her husband, Orville died in April of 1980, as a result of a massive heart attack. In 1984 Viola retired from Hogan Construction Company and was married to William Langfeldt on May 11, 1984. She always kept busy enjoying crafts, playing cards and coffee parties. She enjoyed her grandkids and will be remembered for her commitment to her grandchildren throughout their lives. Viola and Willie were blessed with several years of wintering in Texas.

She remained very active with many activities such as playing shuffle board, making quilts for the needy, choir, Dinner Date, Meals on Wheels and helping in the kitchen with holiday dinners. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids and active with the Ladies Aid and Peace Quilters. She taught Sunday School for 20 years and served as secretary of the Ladies Aid. Viola Arvilla (Hulstein) Langfeldt, age 81, passed away on Saturday; April 10, 2010 at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls; Minnehaha County, South Dakota.

Those left to mourn her passing are: Her husband, William Langfeldt of Rock Rapids, IA; three daughters, Glenda Moser of Cary, NC, Charlene (Alvin) Buffington of Upland, CA and Brenda (Mike) Dunn of Harford, SD; two sons, Henry (Sue) Delfs of Kingsley, IA and Darryl (Jean) Delfs of Council Bluffs, IA; thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters, Carolyn DeKam of Rock Valley and Emma (John) Vogel of Currie, MN, Gert Vonk of Mountain Lake, MN, Minerva (Gerrit John) Vander Streek of Rock Rapids, IA, Winerva Holstein of Sioux Center, IA, Myna Nyhof of Sioux Center, IA; a brother-in-law, Bert Baker of Canton, SD and many other extended family.

Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Nagel; parents, Conrad and Grace Hulstein; a young child, sister, Myna Hulstein, and other sister, Etta Baker ; two brothers, Albertus Hulstein and Fred Hulstein; and two sisters-in-law, Artie Hulstein and Josephine Hulstein; three brothers-in-law, Leonard Nyhof, Henry Vonk and Marvin DeKam. May they rest in peace.

Visitation will be from: 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday; April 13, 2010 at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Funeral services will begin at: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday; April 14, 2010 at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa with the Reverend Mark Hansen officiating. Interment will be at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, Iowa. The Jurrens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
