GARY "GWG" HULSTEIN, 80, of Sioux Center, Iowa died Tuesday morning, 7/6, at the Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility.
A memorial service was held Thursday, 7/9, at 2pm in the chapel of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Interment was held prior to the memorial service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.
Visitation was held Wednesday from 2pm to 8:30pm, with the family present from 7:30pm at 8:30pm at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.
The Hulstein Family prefers memorials be directed to the New Nursing Home Project, c/o Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation.
Gerrit "G.W.G." Hulstein was born August 27, 1923 in Sioux Center, Iowa, to William and Ann (Schuiteman) Hulstein. He made confession of his faith in the First Reformed Church and attended country school near Sioux Center.
On February 23, 1945, he married Nelvina Vander Schaaf. They had seven children: Elizabeth Touchon; Donna Jensen and her husband, Dennis; Kenneth Hulstein and his wife, Janet; Tim Hulstein; Jim Hulstein; Gerri Parish and her husband, Patrick and Kenneth Wayne Hulstein all of Texas.
Gerrit and Nelvina farmed near Sioux Center until 1965. At that time they moved to Kansas where they entered the motel business. Later they moved to Texas where they owned and operated mobile home parks.
On May 13, 1981, Gerrit married Marilou Cortes. Together Gerrit and Marilou continued the mobile home business and later settled near Soldier, Iowa, to farm which was Gerrit's first love along with when his grandchildren who came to help with the farm chores and to visit.
In March of 2002 Gerrit and Marilou moved to Sioux Center at which time he became a resident of the Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility, where Marilou lovingly cared for him until his death.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 23 years, Marilou Hulstein of Sioux Center; his seven children and their spouses; 24 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-inlaw: Harriet and Elrich Vermeer of Sioux Center and Vernie and Paul Van Engelenhoven of Orange City; sister-in-law; Eunice Hulstein of Sioux Center; brother-in-law, Carl Vermeer of Alexandria, MN and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Kenneth Hulstein; his sister, Wilma Vermeer and an infant grandson.
