CLEAR LAKE - Hazel Wisgerhof, 91, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (May 31, 2000) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey, officiating. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake is in charge of services. The family suggest memorials to the First Congregational Church.
Hazel was born March 11, 1909, in Dumont, the daughter of James Thaddeus and Emma Effie (Belt) Canon. She graduated from Dumont High School and Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She moved to Clear Lake in 1946. Hazel dearly loved her children and grandchildren and they were a very active part of their life. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and especially playing bridge. Hazel was a member of First Congregational Church, Clear Lake.
Hazel is survived by three daughters, JoAnn Huey and her husband, Pete, of Clear Lake, Javotte Gorton and her husband, Gerald, and Judy Somers, both of Bloomington, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Beatrice Canon, of Dumont; 16 grandchildren, Jeff Gorton, Jay Gorton, Jill Tinsley, Michael Somers, Deborah Burke, Sandra Harsh, Shelley O'Brien, Denise Clipperton, Daniel Huey, Dawn Richardson, Duane Huey, David Huey, Drew Huey, Dustin Huey, Kelly Jennings and Tim Jennings; 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and her special friends, Chris and Alan Due, of Clear Lake. Her parents; two husbands, Dr. Joseph H. Lerdal and Guy Wisgerhof; daughter, Terry Sue Jennings; two brothers, Hildie and Lyle Canon; and two sisters, Lora Davis and Thada Brehmer, preceded her in death.

Marcile Faye Wisgerhof was born on January 27, 1936, in Newton, Iowa, the daughter of Oliver Henry Wisgerhof and Hazel Viola (DePrenger) Wisgerhof. She was raised near Sully, Iowa. and graduated from Sully High School. She attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Marcile married Melvin Leo Ratcliff on September 13, 1957, at the Sully Community Church in Sully. They were the parents of Cindy and Bonita. They lived in Greenfield, Iowa, and Sully before making their home in Lynnville.
Marcile was an educator for 39 years at the Lynnville-Sully Community School District. She was a 4H leader, a Girl Scout leader, and taught Sunday School at the Lynnville Friends Church. She enjoyed sewing, reading, and being together with her family at their acreage.
Surviving are her daughters, Cindy (Ron Reynolds) Arkema of Killduff, and Bonnie (Steven) Hofer of Lynnville; grandchildren, Christa (Shaun) VanderWeerdt, Anthony Arkema, Jerri (Trevor) Nikkel, Joshua Hofer, Jamie (Randi Visser) Hofer; great-grandchildren, Chloe and Reagan VanderWeerdt, Bella and Lillian Nikkel, and Owsley Hofer; and her sister, Carlene Schrag of Lincoln, Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin Ratcliff in 2021; brother-in-law, Rayford (Eleanora) Ratcliff; sisters-in-law, Neva (Earl) Klyn, Vera (Gerald) Beason, Alice (Lloyd) Sparks, Velma (Floyd) Sparks, and Doris (Clair) Fenner; brother-in-law, Stan Schrag; and nephews, Larry Sparks and Tim Schrag.

Melvin Leo Ratcliff, the son of Harold Rayford Ratcliff and Charlotte Mildred (Groves) Ratcliff, was born on September 24, 1933 at the family home near Lynnville, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm near Lynnville and graduated from Lynnville High School in 1952. He honorably served in the United States Army from 1955 until 1957.
Melvin married Marcile Wisgerhof on September 13, 1957, at the Sully Community Church in Sully, Iowa. They lived in Greenfield and Sully before making their home in Lynnville. Melvin was employed by the Iowa State Patrol from 1957 - 1958 and then worked at the Farm and Home Store in Lynnville, Sully Plumbing and Heating, and Sully Telephone. In 1969 he started Ratcliff Electric and owned and operated the business for over 30 years.
Melvin's family was his everything. He enjoyed having his family live close by and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and enjoying the tranquility and family time at their acreage. He was a longtime youth softball coach in Lynnville and played fastpitch softball for over 30 years. He will be remembered as a family man, as a talented wood carver, and as a fun-loving prankster.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marcile Ratcliff of Lynnville; two daughters, Cindy (Ron Reynolds) Arkema of Killduff, and Bonnie (Steven) Hofer of Lynnville; grandchildren, Christa (Shaun) VanderWeerdt, Anthony Arkema, Jerri (Trevor) Nikkel, Joshua Hofer, Jamie (Randi Visser) Hofer; and great grandchildren, Chloe, Reagan, Bella, Lillian, and Owsley.
