Wilma (Hulstein) Vermeer, 59, of Alexandria, Minnesota, formerly of Sioux Center, died Sunday, July 18, at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Services were in Alexandria Wednesday at Bethesda Lutheran Church with the Rev. Peter Martinson and the Rev. Neal Olson officiating. There will be a prayer service at 2 p.m. Thursday at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sioux Center with the Rev. Brian Steenhoek officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Wilma Evonne Vermeer was born October 7, 1939, in Sioux Center to William and Ann (Schuiteman) Hulstein and was baptized at First Reformed Church. She attended country school near Sioux Center and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1957.

She married Carl Vermeer August 14, 1958. They had three daughters, Christi, Carla and Barbara. Carla died shortly after birth.

They lived in Sioux Center until 1961 when they moved to Alexandria. They moved to Long Prairie, Minnesota, in 1965 and lived there for 22 years, then returned to Alexandria in 1987.

In addition to caring for her family, she worked as a dental assistant at the Long Prairie Dental Clinic.

She was an active member of Bethesda Lutheran Church where she sang in the church choir. She enjoyed reading, biking, walking and handwork. Spending time with her family was important to her and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren.

Survivors are her husband; daughter Christi and her husband Alan Nelson and their three children of Alexandria; daughter Barbara and her husband Gregory Weiss and their three children of Rochester, Minnesota; a brother, Gary Hulstein of Soldier; two sisters, Harriet Vermeer of Sioux Center and Vernie Van Engelenhoven of Orange City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Kenneth Hulstein; and an infant daughter, Carla Beth.

OBITUARY

Carl Vermeer was born on March 30, 1937 in Sioux Center, IA, the son of Benjamin and Christine (VanRoekel) Vermeer. Carl graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1955 and also dated his future wife Wilma Hulstein while attending high school. Carl continued his education and graduated from Westmar College in 1959 in Business Administration. Carl and Wilma were united in marriage on August 14, 1958 in Sioux Center. Three daughters were born: Christi, Carla Beth, and Barbara.

Carl and his family moved to Alexandria in 1961 where they operated a resort on Little Darling Lake. In 1966 they moved to Long Prairie where Carl worked as a Social Worker for Todd County along with various other jobs. Carl and Wilma moved back to Alexandria and semi-retired to a home on Lake Le Homme Dieu in 1987. They wintered in Mesa AZ for a number of years before Wilma's death on July 18, 1999 in Alexandria, MN from an automobile accident.

Carl met Marie Shelstad in September of 2002 and they were married on September 10, 2006 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Holmes City, MN. They enjoyed riding their scooters around the lakes and sharing coffee at McDonalds almost every day with friends. Carl volunteered at the Douglas County Food Shelf for nearly 20 years. They also wintered in Mesa AZ and were blessed by their years together.

Carl was an unassuming man who lived a simple life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing in his younger years. He was also a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Carl Vermeer died on Sunday, June 29, 2014 at the Douglas County Hospital at the age of 77 years old.

He is survived by his loving wife Marie Shelstad of Alexandria; daughters Christi Nelson and husband Larry Parsons of Alexandria, Barb Weiss and husband Gregg of Rochester, MN; grandchildren Ryan Nelson of Alexandria, Abby (Tom) Maloney of Monterey, CA, Matthew (Allie) Weiss of Woodbury, MN, Michael (Kelly) Weiss of Rochester, MN and Laura Weiss of Rochester, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma Vermeer, infant daughter Carla and his parents.

A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Living Word Lutheran Church in Alexandria with the Reverend A.J. Kluver officiating. Interment was in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center, IA on Thursday, July 3, 2014. Casket Bearers were Ryan Nelson, Abby Maloney, Tom Maloney, Matthew Weiss, Michael Weiss, and Laura Weiss.

Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria, MN.
