Obituary of Muriel
Mrs. Muriel Vander Laan, age 87, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Muriel Jean was born on December 30, 1930, near Ireton, the daughter of John and Johanna Wilhelmina (Mouw) Van Binsbergen. She was raised in Sioux Center until her junior year of high school, when her family moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota, where she was a charter member of the Hope Reformed Church in Montevideo. She graduated from the Clarkfield High School and then attended Northwestern College in Orange City.

On August 15, 1951, she married Harold John Vander Laan in Montevideo. They lived in Ayrshire, Wall Lake, and George, Iowa, before settling in Orange City in 1961. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked part time at the Swing Set children's clothing store in Orange City.

Mrs. Vander Laan was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday school and catechism classes, was a part of the Stephen's Ministry, and was a Girl's League sponsor. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and sharing meals and treats with family and friends. She truly had the gift of hospitality

Survivors include her husband of more than 66 years; a daughter and her husband, Rebecca and Martin Koster, of Morrison, Illinois; a daughter-in-law, Lori Vander Laan, of George; four grandchildren, Johanna Vander Laan, of Colorado; Abby, Seth, and Erik Vander Laan, all of George; six step-grandsons; two brothers and their wives, Warren and Ruth Van Binsbergen, of Montevideo; Howard and Mary Van Binsbergen, of Owatonna, Minnesota; and a sister and her husband, Fran and Wayne Vermeer, of Sioux Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sons, Lyle Lee, David Joel, and Philip John Vander Laan.

Obituary of Harold
Harold Vander Laan, age 95, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023, at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen.

Harold John, the son of John and Stella (Vander Maten) Vander Laan, was born on December 15, 1927, on a farm near Maurice, where his family lived until Harold was in fifth grade, when his family moved to a farm north of Orange City. He attended the Maurice and Orange City public schools and Northwestern Junior College in Orange City before earning his bachelor's degree from Westmar College in Le Mars and his Master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado Greeley.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in April of 1946, and was stationed in California at the end of World War II. He was honorably discharged in December of 1946, as a Seaman second class and reenlisted as part of the Navy Reserves until December of 1954.

On August 15, 1951, he was united in marriage to Muriel Van Binsbergen in Montevideo, Minnesota. They made their home in Ayrshire, Wall Lake, and George before settling in Orange City. Over the years he worked as a teacher, coach, and principal, and was the Director of Admissions and Registrar at Northwestern College. During his time at Northwestern, he had the opportunity to encourage many students to work hard, pursue their dreams of a college education, and follow their passions. Muriel passed away on March 20, 2018, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after more than 66 years of marriage.

Mr. Vander Laan was a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City, where he had been a deacon and elder, and taught both catechism and Sunday school classes. He was also a member of the Orange City Lions Club and the Pressman Kosters American Legion. Harold enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and carpentry projects. He built many pieces of furniture and did numerous remodeling and handyman jobs for his family as well as others in and around Orange City. He also constructed a replica of Northwestern's Zwemer hall for the float that has been seen in Tulip Festival parades for almost 25 years.

Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Rebecca and Martin Koster, of Morrison, Illinois; a daughter-in-law, Lori Hibma, of Hartley; four grandchildren, Johanna (Ryan McCort) Vander Laan, Abby Vander Laan, Seth (April) Vander Laan, and Erik Vander Laan; several step-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lena Vander Laan, of Orange City; and Fran (Wayne) Vermeer, of Sioux Center; and two brothers-in-law, Warren (Ruth) Van Binsbergen, of Montevideo; and Howard (Mary) Van Binsbergen, of Owatonna, Minnesota.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sons, Lyle Lee Vander Laan (in infancy), Philip Vander Laan, and David Vander Laan; four brothers, Herman Vander Laan, Louis "Luke" (Etta) Vander Laan, Marion "Bud" (Dorthena) Vander Laan, and Clarence Vander Laan; and a sister, Lorena (Marion) Ten Napel.

Obituary of Warren John
Warren Van Binsbergen, of Montevideo, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2025 at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 92.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, February 21, 2025 at Hope Reformed Church in Montevideo.

Visitation with the family will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Thursday, February 20, 2025 at Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo with a prayer service starting at 5:30pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Warren John Van Binsbergen was born on November 22, 1932, in Ireton, IA, to John and Johanna (Mouw) Van Binsbergen. He was baptized at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Iowa, in February 1933. The family moved to the Clarkfield area, where they farmed. Warren attended and graduated from Clarkfield High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1953. On June 4, 1955, Warren was united in marriage to Ruth Grooters at Hope Reformed Church in Montevideo. They had three children together: Brad, Mark, and Lisa. The family farmed north of Montevideo for over 50 years. Warren also worked as a hail adjuster for Farm Bureau for 20 years.

Warren was a charter member of Hope Reformed Church in Montevideo and served the church in a number of capacities. He was a member of the American Legion and the Chippewa County Extension Board. Warren and Ruth enjoyed traveling together to Canada and read the ship manifest listing his father's family and their trip across the Atlantic from the Netherlands. They also went to many National Parks, the East Coast, Texas, West Coast, Colorado and Montana. Warren and Ruth used their passport for the first time to visit the Grand Caymans for their granddaughter's wedding. They took bus trips and train trips and Warren loved a good road trip. Sunday afternoon drives were a family past time. Warren loved meeting new people. He could walk into a lake resort and 20 minutes later he knew everyone there and their story. He had an amazing sense of direction. He enjoyed reading and gardening. Warren loved his family and was very present at his children's, grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's activities.

Warren is survived by his wife, Ruth; children: Bradley (Becky) Van Binsbergen, Clarkfield, MN; Lisa (Paul) Van Horne, Shoreline, WA; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; siblings: Howard (Mary) Van Binsbergen, Owatonna, MN; Fran (Wayne) Vermeer, Sioux Center, IA; seven nieces and nephews; as well as extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark and Mark's wife Mary, his parents, John and Johanna Van Binsbergen and his sister Muriel VanderLaan.

Memorials may be directed to Samaritan's Purse or Hope Reformed Building Fund.
