Obituary Northwest Iowa Review February 14, 2004

Theresa Ann Hulstein, 83, Ashton died Sat. Feb. 7 at Prairie View Home in Sanborn. Services were Tues. Feb. 10, First Presbyterian Church in Ashton, with the Rev. Dale Lint officiating, Burial was at Gilman Township Cemetery in Ashton, under the direction of Walton-Roste Funeral Home in Ashton.

Theresa Hulstein, daughter of John and Minnie Vander Weerd, was born Feb. 1, 1921 in rural Hospers, IA. She grew up in the Hospers and Alton area where she attended country school. She married William "Bill" Hulstein on June 6, 1950 at her parents home near Hospers. They farmed with his brother Fred Hulstein and Fred's wife Grace until 1953 when they moved to a farm near Ashton. She enjoyed her big garden of vegetables and flowers along with raising chickens. Her sons fondly remember that whatever vegetables their mother grew in the garden would invariably be canned at season's end and be added to her large collection of canned goods. She also grew many flowers in her garden, including gladiolas and dahlias. Her chickens also were an important part of the Hulstein farm life. She maintained 500 layers along with raising 500 pullets. Mr. Hulstein died July 7, 2003.

She remained in their home until she fell and broke her hip. She underwent hip surgery and became a resident of Prairie View Home in Sanborn six weeks ago. She underwent two other hip surgeries and then suffered a stroke that left her unable to communicate.

Church was important to her and she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Ashton.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Hulstein of Ashton and Leon Hulstein of Melvin; three sisters, Grace Hulstein of Sheldon, Jeane Vlieger of Sheldon, and Harriet Hulstein of Fulda, MN; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Vlieger of Sheldon.
