Sebert Kooima, 65, passed away August 17 at about 7:30 p.m. In the morning he had driven to the Peter De Boer home, but suffered a stroke after he arrived there. The De Boers took him home. The Misses Nellie and Rozella Kooima were called home from Grand Rapids, Mich, by their father's death.

Sebert Kooima was born in Groningen, the Netherlands, on June 6, 1880. He came with his parents to this country when he was 12 years old. The family first settled at Orange City, but later came to the Rock Valley vicinity, where they lived on various farms for some time. Afterwards they moved into town.

He was united in marriage to Mary Van Beek on March 9, 1908.

He is survived by his wife and eight children: Simon, Peter, Tina (Mrs. Dick Eppinga) of Inwood, Everdena, Anna, Nellie, Rozella and Clarence. There are also four brothers, John in the Netherlands, Tom, Tim, and Joe, all of Rock Valley, and one sister, Mrs. Herman Van Otterloo.

A sister, Mrs. Henry Baker, and three brothers, Jake, Nick and Simon, preceded him in death.

Mrs. Kooima Services to be Held Today

Mrs. Mary Kooima, 71 died at er home here Monday after sufering a heart attack in her yard.

Mrs. Kooima was born Nov. 22, 1885, in The Netherlands. She had lived here the last 20 years. Her husband; Sebert, died in 1945.

Survivors include five daughers, Mrs. Dick Eppinga, Mrs. Ed Ver Berg and Mrs. Ted Baartman, all of Rock Valley, Miss Everdina Kooima of Holland, Mich., and Mrs. William Schleis of Doon; three sons, Simon of Doon and Peter and Clarence both of Rock Valley, two sisters Mrs. Albert Ten Kley of Sheldon and Mrs. John Den Boer of Rock Valley; three brothers, Peter Van Seek of Sioux Center, Nick Van Beek of Kent City, Mich., and Mease Van Beek of Hawarden, 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at p. m. today (Thursday) at the Vander Ploeg funeral home and at 1:30 p. m. at the First Christian Reformed church. Rev. S. T. Cammenga will officiate, and burial will be in Valley View cemetery.

Simon Kooima, age 94, of Rock Valley, died Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at Hegg Memorial Hospital, Rock Valley. Funeral service was held on Saturday at Calvin Christian Reformed Church with the Reverend Roger Sparks and Reverend Tim Larson as officiants. Interment was at Valley View Cemetery.

Simon was born April 15, 1909 to Sebert and Mary (Van Beek) Kooima near Doon. He was united in marriage to Maggie Prins on June 14, 1933 in rural Sioux Center. Simon farmed in the Rock Valley area until moving to Rock Valley in 1970. Maggie died March 28,1992.

He was church board member, a member of the Christian School Board and a charter member of the Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed farming, fishing and especially spending time with family.

Survivors include: three sons and their wives: Sebertus and Rose Kooima, Myron and Karen Kooima, all of Inwood, and Vernon and Lauri Kooima of Rock Valley; a daughter and her husband, Mary-Ann and Clarence Klarenbeek of Rock Valley; one brother and his wife, Clarence "Jr" and Winifred Kooima of Rock Valley; 2 sisters: Ann Ver Burg and Ruth Schleis, both of Rock Valley; 27 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Simon was preceded by his wife Maggie in 1992, daughter, Kathryn Van Ballegooyen; granddaughter, Wanda Kooima; brother, Peter; sisters: Everdean Kooima, Nellie Bartman and Tena Eppinga. Maggie Kooima, age 80, died Saturday, march 28, 1992 at the Sioux Valley Hospital of Sioux Falls, S. D. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Calvin Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Rev. Roger Sparks officiated. Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley was in charge of arrangements.

Maggie was born February 10, 1912, near Sioux Center, IA. She was the daughter of Martin and Katie (Miersma) Prins. She married Simon S. Kooima on June 14, 1933 at Sioux Center. Together they farmed near Rock Valley until their retirement when they moved to Rock Valley in 1970.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Simon S.; three sons, Serbertus and Myron, both of Inwood, IA, and Vernon of Rock Valley; one daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Mary Ann) Klarenbeek of Rock Valley; one brother, Harry Prins of Sioux Center, IA; one sister-in-law, Alice Prins of Orange City, IA; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Maggie was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Joe (Kathyrn) Van Ballegooyen; one grandchildren, Wanda Kooima; two brothers John and Wilbur Prins; one sister, Mrs. Bill (Grace) Humme.

Peter Kooima
September 2, 1910 - February 3, 1999

Peter Kooima, 88, of Rock Valley, died on Wednesday, February 3, at his home in Rock Valley.

Services were Saturday at Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley with the Rev. Jelmer Groenewold officiating. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley.

Kooima was born on September 2, 1910, near Rock Valley, the son of Sebert and Mary (Van Beek) Kooima.

He married Anne De Boer on February 18, 1937, at Rock Valley. She died on August 11, 1988. They farmed in the Rock Valley area until retiring to Rock Valley in 1984.

He was a charter member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church, where he served as an elder and was a member of the Men's Bible Study. He was a past member of the Rock Valley Christian School board of trustees, was on the original Hegg Memorial Hospital board and was one of the original part-owners of Valley Manor in Rock Valley.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, Sebert and Ann Kooima of Sussex, New Jersey, Ken D. and Ruth Kooima of Rock Valley, Don and Sherry Kooima of Jenison, Michigan, and Harlan and Ellen Kooima of Rock Valley; two daughters and their husbands, Trudy and Ben Huisken of Rock Valley and Marlene and Ron Kuyper of Doon; two brothers. Simon S. Kooima and Clarence Kooima Jr. and his wife, Winifred, all of Rock Valley; four sisters, Tena Eppinga, Ann Ver Burg, Nellie Bartman and Ruth Schleis, all of Rock Valley; 25 grandchildren; and 15 greatgrandchildren.

Anne Kooima, 73, of Rock Valley died Thursday, August 11, 1988, at a hospital in Rock Valley.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 15 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. The Rev. Robert Timmer officiated. Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley.

Family visitation was held at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Mrs. Kooima, the former Anne De Boer, was born Feb. 3, 1915, at Rock Valley.

She married Peter Kooima Feb. 18, 1937, near Rock Valley. The couple farmed near Rock Valley. They retired in 1984 and moved into the town of Rock Valley.

She was a member of the Trinity Christian Reformed Church and the Share Our Faith Bible Study.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, Sebert of Sussex, N.J., Don of Schererville, Ind., Ken and Harlan, both of Rock Valley; two daughters, Mrs. Ben (Trudy) Huisken of Rock Valley and Mrs. Ron (Marlene) Kuyper of Doon, Iowa; two brothers, Bill DeBoer of Rock Valley and Jake DeBoer of Littleton, Colo.; 21 grandchildren.

A memorial has been established in her name at Bibles for Mexico, a project of the World Home Bible League.

Dick Eppinga, 78, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 18, 1989 in his home.

He was born Sept. 25, 1910, in Perkins, Iowa.

He married Tena Kooima on Feb. 28, 1940, in Rock Valley. They farmed near Inwood, Iowa until 1950, when they moved to a farm near Rock Valley. In 1972, they retired and moved into town.

He was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons: Jeffrey, Middleburg, Iowa; and Sydney, Rock Valley; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Mrs. Tuenis (Alice) Van Middendorp, Rock Valley.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, 1989 in the Netherlands Reformed Church, Rock Valley, with burial in the Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Visitation was held at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Tena Eppinga, 90, of Rock Valley died Saturday, October 4, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Netherlands Reformed Church in Rock Valley with the Rev. G. M. de Leeuw officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley.

Mrs. Eppinga was born July 12, 1913, near Rock Valley, the daughter of Sebert and Mary (Van Beek) Kooima. She married Dick Eppinga on February 28, 1940, at Rock Valley. They farmed southeast of Inwood until farming near Rock Valley in 1950. They retired to Rock Valley in 1972. He died April 18, 1989. She moved to the Four Seasons in Rock Valley in 1998.

Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey of Le Mars and Sydney and his wife Audrey of Rock Valley; two brothers, Simon S. Kooima and Clarence. "Junior" and his wife Winifred Kooima, all of Rock Valley; two sisters, Ann Ver Burg and Ruth Schleis, both of Rock Valley; a sister-in-law, Alice Van Middendorp of Rock Valley; nine grandchildren; and 13 greatgrandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Sally Eppinga; a brother, Peter Kooima; and two sisters, Everdean Kooima and Nellie Bartman. Memorials may be directed to Netherlands Reformed Christian School in Rock Valley.

Services held last week for Miss Kooima

Miss Everdena Kooima was born to Mr. and Mrs. Siebert Kooima, Feb. 29, 1916, on a farm near Rock Valley. She died Feb. 6, 1961 in her home in Holland, Michigan.

Miss Kooima attended the Rock Valley Christian school, Grand Rapids Christian high school, was a graduate of Calvin college, and recently received her Master Degree from the University of Michigan. She thaught in the local Christian school for several years. Miss Kooima also taught in Christian schools in Chicago, Ill., Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and at the time of her death was teaching in the Christian high school in Holland, Mich.

Funeral services, for Miss Kooima were held Tuesday afternoon Feb. 7 in the Central Christian Reformed church in Holland and Friday afternoon. Feb. 10 in the First Christian Reformed church of Rock Valley. Burial was in the Rock Valley cemetery.

Survivors include three brothers; Simon Kooima, Peter Kooima and Clarence Kooima, and four sisters, Mrs. Richard Eppinga, Mrs. Ed Ver Burg, Mrs. Ted. Bartman and Mrs. William Schleis.

Ann Ver Burg (Kooima) was one of 8 children born to Sebert and Mary (Van Beek) Kooima on a farm southwest of Rock Valley, Iowa. She was born June 23, 1918. Ann told of how she shared clothes with her sisters and slept 3 to a bed, 5 girls in a room.

After 2 years of high school, she started as an aid in a classroom with one teacher, 2 grades and 62 students. After doing this for 4 years she finished high school, went to summer school and began teaching. She taught in country school, Rock Valley Christian, Sioux Center and Doon Christian. She finished her career as a Foster Grandparent in the Rock Valley Community School, retiring at the age of 92. Hundreds of people can say "she was my teacher". She also played piano for the Hope Haven Gospel Choir for 25 years.

Ann married Edward Ver Burg in 1946. They had one son, Ed. She lived on the farm north of Rock Valley for 70 years.

Ann was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church and a faithful member of Faith Circle. She enjoyed playing organ and piano and she loved to read.

The community was shocked and saddened once again when word spread Thursday, May 15, of the accidental death of Ted Bartman. The 59-year-old farmed died from internal injuries suffered while making repairs to a stock truck. The accident happened at about 2:30 p.m. on the family farm located three miles north and one mile east of Rock Valley.

The Rock Valley Ambulance answered the call for help and Bartman was taken to Hegg Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ted Bartman was born February 11, 1921, at Rock Valley. He married Nellie Kooima on March 14, 1947, at Rock Valley. He was a board member of the Production Credit Association of Sheldon.

Survivors include the widow; two sons, Brent and Todd of Rock Valley; two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Muriel) Arkema of De Motte, Indiana, and Mrs. Bernie (Randa) Cole of San Diego, California, and three grandchildren. Also two brothers, Peter and Herbert both of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and three sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Harriet) Block of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Gerrit D. (Betty) Van Maanen of Doon and Mrs. Arthur (Theresa) Kooima of Rock Valley.

Nellie Bartman of Rock Valley died March 19, 2002 at Hegg Memorial Hospital at the age of 79. She was a life-long resident of Rock Valley where she was born August 21, 1922. Nellie's parents were Sebert and Mary (Van Beek) Kooima. Nellie was one of 8 children. She attended Rock Valley Christian Grade School and Rock Valley High School. She went on to attend Northwestern College in Orange City, receiving a teaching certificate. That led to five years of teaching: 3 years in rural country schools and 2 at Rock Valley Christian School.

On March 17, 1947, Nellie was united in marriage to Theodore Bartman of Rock Valley. Ted and Nellie farmed north of Rock Valley until his death on May 15, 1980. In 1982 Nellie moved to Rock Valley. She was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church. Nellie adamantly voiced her love for Jesus Christ and the Word of God. Nellie spent countless hours volunteering in many different activities and organizations. She still spent many hours on the farm, especially at planting and harvest time.

She enjoyed volunteering in the community. She was involved in the Senior Citizens, Meals on Wheels and the Hospital Auxiliary. She was also very active in Calvin Christian Reformed Church. She had a love for music and enjoyed cooking in her home and on the family farm. Her grandchildren and their activities played a very important part of her life.

Nellie is survived by 2 sons and their wives, Brent and Kathy of Worthington, MN and Todd and Julie of Rock Valley, and 2 daughters, Muriel Arkema (Carl) of North Muskegon, MI and Randa Cole (Bernie) of Las Vegas, NV. Nellie's much loved grandchildren include: Tim and wife Christy, Ryan and fiance Jaclyn, Trent Arkema, Patrick Bartman, Brooke, Dana and Theo Bartman, as well as one great-grandson, Logan Arkema.

Surviving brothers and sisters include Simon Kooima, Clarence (Jr) Kooima, Tena Eppinga, Ann Ver Berg and Ruth Schleis all of Rock Valley. Surviving in-laws include Herb and Barb Bartman of Grand Rapids, MI, Art Kooima of Rock Valley, Harriet Block of Portland, OR, Jesse Bartman, Grand Rapids, MI, Ann Atkinson, Grand Rapids, MI and Janet Ranschau of Sioux Falls.

Preceding Nellie in death were her husband Theodore, her sister Everdean Kooima and brother Peter Kooima.

William G. Schleis, 57, of Rock Valley died Saturday, August 1, 1987, in a hospital in Rock Valley after a sixmonth illness. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 4 in the Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. The Rev. Jerry Van Groningen officiated. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery under the direction of Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.

Mr. Schleis was born April 5, 1930, in Mapleton. He attended grade school in Mapleton and graduated from St. Joseph High School in Le Mars. On Sept, 22, 1952, he married Ruth Kooima in Rock Valley, He was employed with Farmers Elevator in Rock Valley for 30 years. Mr. Schleis was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James of Rock Valley; four brothers, Leonard, Lavern, and Edward, all of Le Mars and Walter of Struble; two sisters, Mrs. Summer (Clara) Rhodes of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., and Mrs. George (Helen) Kilker of Oyens, and three grandsons.

Ruth Schleis, 83, of Rock Valley, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Whispering Heights, Rock Valley. Funeral Service will be 10:30 am Saturday at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Rev. Gideon Wamala and Rev. John Engbers will be officiating. Burial at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday with the family present 6:30-8 pm Friday at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

Rozella "Ruth" was born May 16, 1925 near Rock Valley, daughter of Sebert and Mary (Van Beek) Kooima. She began working as a secretary at the Valley State Bank before graduating from the Rock Valley Public High School. Ruth married William "Bill" Schleis on September 22, 1952 at Rock Valley. Together they lived at Rock Valley where Ruth continued working at Valley State Bank as a bank teller for a total of 50 years before retiring. Bill died on August 1, 1987. Ruth moved to Whispering Heights on March 13, 2002.

Ruth is survived by her son, Jim (Lorna) Schleis of Rock Valley; 3 grandchildren, Tim Schleis and his fiancée Dawn Stanford of Sioux Falls, SD, Jeff Schleis of Rock Valley, Tom (Heidi) Schleis of Sioux Falls, SD; step-great-grandchildren, Toni and Christian; brother, Clarence (Winifred) Kooima of Rock Valley; sister, Ann Ver Burg of Rock Valley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; brothers, Peter and Simon Kooima; sisters, Everdean Kooima, Tena Eppinga, and Nellie Bartman.

Clarence 'Junior' Kooima, 88, of Rock Valley, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Whispering Heights surrounded by his family.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Rev. Harlan De Jong officiating. Clarence "Junior" Kooima was born August 27, 1928 in Rock Valley, Iowa, the son of Sebert and Mary (Van Beek) Kooima. He attended Rock Valley Christian School and graduated from the Rock Valley High School. His family lived on the Kooima Family Farm until 1937, when they moved into Rock Valley. Junior served with the US Air Force from 1948 until 1952, being stationed in the states and at the Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico. He married Winifred Smith on June 1, 1949 in Arkansas. Following his service in the Air Force they farmed south of Rock Valley and raised their family. They retired from farming in 1992 and moved into Rock Valley. Junior was a commodity broker and co-owner of the Rock Valley Commodities.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley and the VFW. He was a former board member of the Rock Valley Golf Club, where he was one of the original members and also a former board member of the Production Credit Association (PCA). Junior was the best father, grandfather, great-grandpa, and a great friend with a warm heart. He was an avid sports fan, both nationally and local, while rooting for his favorite teams the Chicago Bears, New York Yankees, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Junior loved golfing, playing cards, and telling tall stories.

Survivors include his wife, Winifred; four daughters, Linda (Chuck) Witte of Wheatland, Wyoming, Gloria (Larry) Dirksen of Rock Valley, Karen (Ronald) Owen of Orange City, Iowa, and Lori (Scott) Ohlemann of Rock Rapids, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Ver Berg of Rock Valley, Iowa.

Junior was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mic in September of 1991; granddaughter, Kelsey Witt; brothers, Simon S. (Maggie) Kooima and Peter (Anne) Kooima; sisters, Ruth (Bill) Schleis, Everdean Kooima, Tena (Dick) Eppinga, and Nellie (Ted) Bartman; and brother -in-law, Ed Ver Berg

Winifred Kooima, 87, of Rock Valley, Iowa, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley, Iowa.

Winifred Joyce (Smith) Kooima was born March 6, 1930, in Hull, Iowa, daughter of John H. and Winnie (De Vries) Smith. She lived in Sioux Center until her sophomore year of school. Her family then moved to Rock Valley where she met the love of her life, Jr. Kooima. Winifred graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1948.

Jr. and Winifred got married on June 1, 1949, in Arkansas. They lived at various Air Force bases, including Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico.

Jr. and Winifred returned to Rock Valley in 1952 to raise their family of five on the farm south of Rock Valley. Winifred's days kept busy bringing delicious lunches to the guys working in the fields, taking the children back and forth to various activities while being a faithful prayer warrior. Winifred was the family seamstress. She did lots of sewing for her daughters' weddings and was the "go to" person for patches, tears, zippers and hems. Winifred loved her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Winifred was a nurse's aide at Valley Manor (now called Whispering Heights) for 12 years. She was a member of First Reformed Church in Rock Valley, where she taught Sunday School and Catechism along with being a member of Mary Circle.

She is survived by her four daughters, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Daughter and son-in-law Linda (Kooima) and Chuck Witte of Wheatland, Wyoming, their son and daughter-in-law Chad and Genee' Witte of Laramie, Wyoming, daughter and son-in-law Nickole (Witte) and Dan Fiers of Loveland, Colorado, daughter and son-in-law Gloria (Kooima) and Larry Dirksen of Rock Valley, Iowa, their son and daughter-in-law Cory and Christina Dirksen of Phoenix, Arizona, daughter and son-in-law Kristy (Dirksen) and Chad Van Beek of Rock Valley, Iowa, and son and daughter-in-law Dan and Alicia Dirksen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, daughter and son-in-law Karen (Kooima) and Ron Owens of Orange City, Iowa, their daughter and son-in-law Stephanie (Bierbaum) and Rob Howard of Woodstock, Georgia, son Dustin Bierbaum of Orange City, Iowa, and son and daughter-in-law Nate and Jen Owens of West Des Moines, Iowa, daughter and son-in-law Lori (Kooima) and Scott Ohlemann of Rock Rapids, Iowa, son Brandon Witt of Maui, Hawaii, and daughter Mickee Witt of Mumbai, India. Mic's son Michael Kooima of Anaheim, California.

Preceded in death by husband Clarence "Jr" Kooima; son Clark "Mic" Kooima; granddaughter Kelsey Witt; parents; sister Jerry (Jim) Smith; brothers John H (Bonnie) Smith, Gerben Smith and an infant brother; and special cousin Betty (Pete) Eisma.
