Funeral services being held today for Van Maanen
Funeral services for Edward Van Maanen, 73, who died at his home Sunday, July 15, will be held 1:30 pm at the First Christian Reformed church on Thursday Rev J. Byker will officiate. Burial will be at the Valley View cemetery under the direction of the Porter Funeral Home.
Mr Van Maanen was born in the Netherlands, December 31, 1888. He came to this country at the age of 4 with his parents. He married Hattie De Vries February 23, 1921, at Rock Valley. They farmed near here until 1952, when they moved to Rock Valley. He was a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include the widow; four sons, Gerrit of Bellflower, Calif., John, Henry and Jim of Rock Valley; two daughters, Mrs Hubert Landegent (Wilmina) and Mrs Art Vanden Bosch (Henrietta) both of Rock Valley; 20 grandchildren, one brother and five sisters.

Mrs. Edward G. Van Maanen, 89, of Rock Valley died Sunday, January 17 in a hospital in Rock Valley after a long illness. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Trinity Christian Reformed Church. The Rev. Daniel De Groot officiated. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery. Family visitation was from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.
Mrs. Van Maanen, the former Hattie De Vries was born Sept. 24, 1892, in Middleburg. She married Edward Van Maanen, Feb. 23, 1921, in Rock Valley. He died July 16, 1962. She had been a resident of Valley Manor Nursing Home the last seven years.
Survivors include four sons, Gerrit of Lakewood, Calif., and John, Henry and James, all of Rock Valley; two daughters, Mrs. Hubert (Wilmina) Landegent and Mrs. Art (Henrietta) Vanden Bosch, both of Rock Valley; a brother, Herbert of Escondido, Calif.; a sister, Jennie of Rock Valley; 19 grandchildren, and 31 greatgrandchildren.

John E. Van Maanen, 87, of Rock Valley, died Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Hegg Memorial Hospital, Rock Valley.
John was born December 3, 1925 at the family farm north of Rock Valley, son of Edward and Hattie (De Vries) Van Maanen. He attended Rock Valley Christian Elementary School through the 8th grade. John made profession of faith in the First Christian Reformed Church and later became a charter member of the Calvin Christian Reformed Church. He worked on the family farm until he entered the army where he served in Japan and the Philippines from 1946 to 1947. Upon honorable discharge, he attended a trade school in Chicago for auto mechanics and then worked as a mechanic in Rock Rapids and Rock Valley.
On June 17, 1952, John married Ruth Van Heukelom at Hull, Iowa. The couple made their home and farmed north of Rock Valley for 35 years before retiring to Rock Valley in 1987 and he continued to help on the family farm. John was currently a member of Faith Reformed Church where he served as a care elder and also was active in the American Legion, Farm Bureau, M2 Prison Ministry, Men's Bible Study, and enjoyed visiting the sick and shut-in. John had interests in woodworking, politics, traveling, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Ruth; eight children, Randy (Luana) Van Maanen of Lismore, MN, Sandra (Wally) Butterfield of Atlanta, GA, Rachel (David) Clover of Sioux City, IA, Belinda (Steve) Humphrey of Fort Worth, TX, Doris (Jeff) Gregg of Aurelia, IA, Terry (Sue) Van Maanen of Rock Valley, Lorna (Ray) Mundy of Scranton, IA, Sally (Tim) Mills of Marshalltown, IA; seventeen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Henrietta Vanden Bosch and Wihelmina Landegent both of Rock Valley; sisters-in-law, Anita Van Maanen of Rock Valley Kathleen Vander Velde of Sanborn, Iowa

Charles James "Jim" Van Maanen, 63, of Rock Valley died suddenly on Monday, November 23, in Rock Valley. Services were at Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley on Friday, with the Rev. Jelmer Groenewold officiating. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery.
Van Maanen was bom on January 17, 1935, near Rock Valley, the son of Edward and Hattie (De Vries) Van Maanen. He graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull. He then worked for Roorda Machine Shop.
He married Elda Kooima on June 19, 1958, in Rock Valley. In 1973, he began working for Lakeside Dairy as a route driver, retiring in 1997 after 24 years. Following his retirement, he worked part time for A & I Products. He was a charter member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church, where he served on the council and the Bible-study group. He was a board member of Rock Valley Christian School. The couple volunteered in Justice For All work projects, remodeling and fixing homes in Jackson, Mississippi. He enjoyed fishing and hiking.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters and their husbands, Bonnie and Doug Vande Hoef of Windom, Minnesota, Deb and Leonard Hoekstra of Rock Valley, Barb and Glenn Van Bockel of Holland, Minnesota, and Lori and Steve Dykstra of Hospers; three brothers, Gerrit of Lakewood, California, and John and his wife, Ruth, and Henry and his wife, Anita, all of Rock Valley; two sisters and their husbands, Wilmina and Hubert Landegent and Henrietta and Art Vanden Bosch, all of Rock Valley; mother-in-law, Sue Kooima of Rock Valley; and 10 grandchildren, Mark, Kristen and Eric Vande Hoef, Jodi, Jackie and Brandy Hoekstra, Sam, Tim and Annaka Van Bockel and Joshua Dykstra.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Sam T. Kooima; and a sister-in-law, Berdena Van Maanen.

Elda Van Maanen
Elda Van Maanen, 62, of Rock Valley died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. of injuries suffered in a pedestrian vehicle accident in Rock Valley. Services will be 11 am Monday at Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, with the Rev. Jelmer Groenwold officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Mrs. Van Maanen was born March 28, 1938, near Rock Valley, the daughter of Sam T. and Sue (Hoekstra) Kooima. She attended Rock Valley Christian Grade School and graduated from Western Christian High School. She received her teaching certificate from Dordt College. She taught at Hull (Iowa) Christian Grade School.
She married Charles "Jim" Van Maanen on June 19, 1958, in Rock Valley. She taught at Doon (Iowa) Christian Grade School before owning and operating "Cards and Yards Store" from 1979 to 1988. She was currently employed with Valley Pharmacy. Her husband died Nov. 23, 1998. She was a charter member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church and was active with "Justice for All," and MOPS.
Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Bonnie and Doug Vande Hoef of Windom, Minn., Deb and Leonard Hoekstra of Rock Valley, Barb and Glenn Van Bockel of Holland, Minn, and Lori and Steve Dykstra of Hospers, Iowa; her mother of Rock Valley; two brothers and their wives, Tim and Clarine Kooima and Gary and Joan Kooima, all of Hull; a sister and her husband, Karen and Dennis Gaalswyk of Woodbury, Minn.; and 10 grandchildren, Mark, Kristen and Eric Vande Hoef, Jodi, Jackie and Brady Hoekstra, Sam, Tim and Annaka Van Bockel and Joshua Dykstra.
She also was preceded in death by her father.

Hubert Landegent, age 89, of Rock Valley, died Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Whispering Heights.
Hubert William Landegent was born January 11, 1924 near Sioux Center, Iowa, son of John and Annie (Vander Linden) Landegent. In 1945, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan.
On January 24, 1947, Hubert married the love of his life, Wilhelmina Van Maanen. Together they lived and farmed east of Rock Valley for 62 years before moving to Rock Valley in 2008. Hubert also drove bus for River Valley many years. His enjoyment in life was his family and friends, riding motorcycle, and fishing. He will be remembered as a wonderful man who loved the Lord.
Grateful and blessed for having shared his life are his wife, Wilhelmina; five children, Ron (Peg) Landegent of Panama City, FL, Dean (Marilyn) Landegent of Sioux Falls, SD, Larry (Marcia) Landegent of Rock Valley, Nancy (Bob) Smith of Chester, SD, and Betty (Jim) Fredrikson of Rock Valley; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill (Alma) Landegent and Adrian (Nyla) Landegent all of Rock Valley; sister, Kay (Jack) Van Otterloo of Lakewood, CA; and sisters-in-law, Jean Landegent of Inwood, IA and Audrey Landegent of Sioux Falls, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Case and John Landegent; sisters, Johanna (Henry) Wynia and Helen Lathrom.
