Funeral services for Arie Van Maanen, 66, who died Friday at his residence in Rock Valley after a long illness, were held Tuesday at the First Christian Reformed church with Rev. C. Huissen officiating.
Mr. Van Maanen was born in the Netherlands June 13, 1890 and came to this country at the age of 2, also to Sioux County.
He married Jennie De Vries Feb. 17, 1917. He resided on the same farm for 50 years before retiring three years ago and moving to Rock Valley.
Survivors include the widow, five daughters, Mrs. Richard Stegenga of Luverne, Minn., Mrs. John A. Kempema of George, Ia., Mrs. Herman Kempema of Rock Valley, Mrs. Fred Baker of Sanborn, and Mrs. Gilbert Kuiken of Des Moines; two sons, Gerrit of Rock Valley and John of Bellflower, Calif. One sister, Mrs. John Van Sloten of Doon, one brother, Ed Van Maanen of Rock Valley, one half brother Bert Van Maanen of Sioux Center; five half step sisters, Mrs. Bert Jacobsma, Mrs. Herman Zwak, Mrs. Jake Baartman and Mrs. Sam T. Kooima, all of Rock Valley.

Jennie Van Maanen, 93, of Rock Valley died Tuesday, May 24, 1988, in a hospital in Rock Valley. Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28 in the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley with the Rev. Paul Bakker officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation was held in the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Mrs. Van Maanen, the former Jennie DeVries, was bom July 23, 1894, in Middleburg. She married Arie Van Maanen Feb. 16, 1917, in Rock Valley. The couple farmed southeast of Rock Valley until 1954 when they retired and moved in to Rock Valley. Mr. Van Maanen died May 24, 1957. She moved to Valley Manor Nursing Home in 1976. Mrs. Van Maanen was a member of Martha Circle of the First Christian Reformed Church.
Survivors include two sons, Gerrit A. of Rock Valley and John A. of Lakewood, Calif.; five daughters, Mrs. Henry (Wilmina) Winterswyk of Luverne, Minn., Mrs. Herman (Henrietta) Kempema and Mrs. John (Aria) Kempema, both of Rock Valley, Mrs. Fred (Harriet) Bakker of Sanborn and Mrs. Delbert (Margaret) Kuiken of Lansing, Ill.; a brother, Herbert DeVries of Escondido, Calif.; 31 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Charlie and a sister, Hattie Van Maanen.

Herman Kempema, 93, of Rock Valley, died Monday, August 31, 2009 at Whispering Heights. Funeral Service will be 10:30 am Friday at First Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial at Valley View Cemetery. Rev. Rich Kooistra will be officiating. Visitation will be Thursday with the family present 6:30- 8 pm. at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.
Herman Kempema was born November 19, 1915 at Rock Valley, son of Riemer and Hermina (Vedders) Kempema. Herman married Henrietta Van Maanen on April 28, 1943 on the family farm. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. After the war, Herman and Henrietta lived in Rock Valley where he worked with his brother Clarence in the Kempema Hatchery and Feed Store and later Dykstra Produce. Herman later was custodian and bus driver at Rock Valley Christian Grade School until retiring in 1984. Herman enjoyed playing piano, organ, accordion, guitar, and the harmonica. He also enjoyed playing pool with his friends at the Senior Citizen's Club and most important, spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife, Henrietta; children: Harlyn (Diane) Kempema of Rock Valley, Glenda (Fred) Vollink of LeMars, IA, Wally (Jolaine) Kempema of Sioux Falls, Arnold Kempema of Rock Valley, Marvin (Lola) Kempema of Woodstock, GA, Curtis (Darlene) Kempema of Ventura, CA; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Herman was preceded in death by a grandson, Barry Vollink; brothers: Henry, Charlie, Ernest, Clarence and John Kempema; sisters: Jennie Kooistra, Fannie Kooistra, Freda Groeneweg, and Jeanette Van Maanen.

Harriet (Van Maanen) Bakker, the daughter of Arte and Jennie (DeVries) Van Maanen, was born at Rock Valley, Iowa, on February 22, 1924. She lived her youth at Rock Valley where she attended country school.
On Dec. 17, 1947 she was united In marriage to Fred Bakker at Rock Valley. Following their marriage, they lived south of Sanborn for 37 years where they were engaged In farming and raising their family. In 1984 they moved into Sanborn. Harriet died at her home on March 8, 2000, at the age of 76 years and 16 days.
Harriet is survived by her husband: Fred of Sanborn, three sons and their wives: Verlyn and Bethann, Gene and Beth, all of Sanborn, and Randy and Sheila of Hillsboro, Ore.; 10 grandchildren: Caresa Carney, Nathan, Joah, Kelsey, Haylee, Ryan, Amanda, Joshua, Shane and Caleb Bakken; three greatgrandchildren: Nichelle and Cayle Carney and Abbie Bakken four sisters: Wilmina Winterswyk of Luverne, Minn., Henrietta Kempema, Arta Kempema and Margaret Kuiken all of Rock Valley; and two brothers: John Van Maanen of Lake wood, Calif., and Gerrit Van Maanen of Rock Valley.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Harriet was a member of Cornerstone United Reformed Church and had been a volunteer at the Village Treasure Chest. Some of her favorite activities included singing, reading, crocheting, baking and playing games.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 10 at Cornerstone United Reformed Church in Sanborn with Rev. Harry Zekveld officiating. Casket bearers were Nathan Bakker, Joah Bakker, Joshua Bakker, Joshua Carney, Ryan Bakker and John M. Vander Haag. Burial was In Roseland Cemetery at Sanborn with the Sanborn Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Gerrit A. Van Maanen, 84, of Rock Valley went to his heavenly home Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at home. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Burial will be prior to the service Thursday in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Gerrit was born Oct. 21, 1925, on the family farm southeast of Rock Valley, the son of Arie and Jennie (DeVries) Van Maanen. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Gerrit married Joan Van Veldhuizen on June 11, 1954, in Rock Valley. They lived on the Van Maanen family farm until retiring to Rock Valley in 1989. Gerrit then worked for Hope Haven and volunteered at Wheelchair International Ministries, where memorials may be directed.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; son, Don (Colleen) Van Maanen of Lynden, Wash.; daughters, Sherry (Fred) Farr of Chino Hills, Calif., Karen (Steve) Groen of Minneapolis, Arlys (Rick) Jasper of Ontario, Calif., Connie (Mike) Grevengoed of Hull, Iowa; brother, John (Marvis) Van Maanen of Lakewood, Calif.; sisters, Henrietta Kempema and Arta Kempema, both of Rock Valley; brothers-in-law, Fred Bakker of Sanborn, Iowa, Ron (Gert) Van Veldhuizen of Rock Valley; sisters-in-law, Claretta (John) Lobbes of Orange City, Iowa, Elaine Bolkema and Winifred Van Veldhuizen, both of Rock Valley; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Arta J. Kempema, 90, of Rock Valley, passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the Whispering Heights in Rock Valley.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Rev. Matthew Haan officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley. Visitation with the family present will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Reformed Church. The Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley is assisting the family.
Arta J. Kempema was born April 21, 1928 on a farm southwest of Rock Valley, Iowa, the daughter of Arie and Jeannie (De Vries) Van Maanen. She married John A. Kempema on March 14, 1949 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. They lived on a farm near George, Iowa for 8 years before returning to Rock Valley. Arta taught in a country school for over three years. She worked as a nurse’s aide for twenty-five years at the Valley Manor Nursing Home. Arta later volunteered for hospice for four years and at Valley Manor for four years. John passed away on April 17, 1993.
Arta was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church and the Ruth Circle. She loved her church and her community of Rock Valley. She enjoyed and was a wonderful baker. Arta loved playing cards and board games with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Harley (Sheryl) Kempema of Burnsville, Minnesota, Jolene (Tom) Kerwin of Monona, Wisconsin, Al (Robin) Kempema of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, Stan (Molly) Kempema also of Fort Atkinson, and Norma (Bill) Sebert of Leesburg, Florida; nine grandchildren, Cory Kempema, Jamie Kempema, Aaron Kempema, Zachary Kerwin, Kelsey Hopping, Louisa Kempema, Jocelyn O’Brien, Nathan Kempema, and Daniel Kempema; five great-grandchildren, Rosie Hopping, Simone Kempema, Graham Kerwin, Kian O’Brien, and John Thomas O’Brien; one brother, John (Marvis) Van Maanen of Lakewood, California.
Arta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; grandson, Matthew Kempema; and siblings, Wilmina Winterswyk, Henrietta Kempema, Harriet Bakker, Gerrit Van Maanen, and Margaret Kuiken.
