Obituaries of Lucy and Herman

Serices Held For Mrs. Herman Zwak

Funeral service for Mrs Herman Zwak, 64, were at 2 pm Monday at the First Christian Church here. The Rev. Leonard Van Drunen officiated. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery under the direction of Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley. Mrs. Zwak died Thursday at a Sioux Falls, S.D. hospital after a long illness.

She was born Aug. 10, 1902 at Perkins, Iowa. The former Lucy Van Maanen, she was married to Herman Zwak Dec. 2, 1920, at Rock Valley.

Survivors include the widower; three sons, Gerrit, Herbert and John, all of Sioux Falls; two daughters, Mrs. Leonard Hecht, Sioux Falls and Mrs. Simon Vogelzang, Rock Valley; three sisters, Mrs. Bert Jacobsma, Mrs. Jake Baartman, and Mrs. Simon T. H. Kooima, all of Rock Valley; a step-sister Mrs: John Van Sloten, Doon; 25 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

HERMAN ZWAK

Funeral services were held at the First Christian Reformed church in Rock Valley at 1:30 p. m. October 23 for Herman Zwak, 71, of Rock Valley, who died at his home Saturday.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Leonard Van Drunen and burial was made in the Valley View cemetery at Rock Valley. Mr. Zwak was born October 15, 1897, in the Netherlands and was married to Lucy Van Maanen December 2, 1920 at Rock Valley. She preceded him in death in 1966.

Survivors include three sons, Gerrit and John of Sioux Falls and Herbert of Platte, S. D.; two daughters, Mrs, Leonard Hecht of Sioux Falls and Mrs, Simo Vogelzang of Rock Valley; 26 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, six brothers and two sisters.

Gerrit Zwak, son of Herman and Lucy (Van Maanen) Zwak, was born November 17, 1924 in Rock Valley, IA. He grew up and received his education there. Gerrit was united in marriage with Tillie Vierhout on a beautiful day, November 12, 1942 in Peoria, IL. Because Gerrit was working the night shift starting at 11:00 PM on the railroad there, they were married in the morning so he wouldn't miss work. They did not own a car, so a "rich" friend drove them to the Justice of the Peace to get married. They remained in Peoria for a year before taking a train to Beaver Creek, MN to work on a farm.

The couple moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1949. Gerrit worked at John Morrell and Company for 36 years before retiring on January 1, 1985.

Gerrit was a member of First Christian Reformed Church, and UFCW Local 304A. He was past-president of the Morrell Retiree's Club. Gerrit was also proud that he traveled to Minot, ND at Thanksgiving for 15 years straight to help his son, Wayne, feed the needy of the Minot area.

Grateful for having shared his life are his beloved wife of 66 years, Tillie; five children, Janet Hagen and her husband, Daryl, Sioux Falls, SD, Lucille Langdon and her husband, Douglas, Sioux Falls, SD, Gerald Zwak and his wife, Julie, Sioux Falls, SD, Harlan Zwak and his wife, Kaci, Sioux Falls, SD, Wayne Zwak and his wife, Val, Minot, ND; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two siblings, Wilhelmina Vogelzang, Rock Valley, IA, John Zwak and his wife, Geraldine, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Herbert Zwak, Willie Zwak and Jennie Hecht.


Tillie Zwak, 89, passed away, Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Prince of Peace Nursing Home. Funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Falls with burial to follow at Hills of Rest Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM on Monday, May 16 at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Tillie was born on November 8, 1921, in Rock Valley, IA. Growing up she received her education in Rock Rapids, IA. On November 12, 1942, she married Gerrit Zwak in Peoria, IL. In 1949 the couple made their home in Sioux Falls where she sold Avon for many years and later began working for Sears as a sales person. She retired in 1981. Tillie was a longtime member of First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Falls.

Tillie was preceded in death by her husband, Gerrit Zwak; mother, Jennie Reit; brother, John Zylstra; and sister, Jean Dessem.

Zwak, Everdean "Dean", 82, passed away Friday, September 4, 2015. She was born July 31, 1933 in Rock Valley, IA to Meas and Grace (Meerbeek) Van Beek. Dean was a very religious person who cared for people and enjoyed helping.

She is survived by her children, Harlow (Susan) Zwak, Glenda Merkwann, Ricky Zwak, and David (Dana) Zwak; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 1 brother; and 3 sisters.

John "Hank" Zwak, 87, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away Thursday, October 25, 2018 at Ava’s House Hospice in Sioux Falls surrounded by his family. His funeral service will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 30 at First Christian Reformed Church, Sioux Falls, with burial at Hills of Rest Cemetery. Visitation begins at 5:00 PM Monday, October 29 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

John Henry "Hank" Zwak, son of Herman and Lucy (VanMaanen) Zwak, was born July 7, 1931 in Doon, IA. After completing school, while working on the family farm he then met Geraldine VanBeek. John was united in marriage with Geraldine on April 4, 1952 in Alcester, SD. The couple were blessed with five children, Harvey, Melvin, Roxanne, Scott and Dawn. John worked for John Morrell and Company as a mechanic for 36 years. He also worked various part-time jobs, including at Halgerson Oil for 14 years.

John has been a member of First Christian Reformed Church for many years and was also a member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed coaching softball, spending time with family and friends, and boating at their cabin at Lake Poinsett. John was also a loyal Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 66 years, Geraldine Zwak; four children, Melvin Zwak and his wife, Kathleen, Humboldt, SD, Roxanne Sulatisky and Arnold Ste. Marie, Vawn, Saskatchewan, Canada, Scott Zwak, Sioux Falls, SD, Dawn Rames and her husband, Troy, Sioux Falls, SD; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by a son, Harvey; his parents, Herman and Lucy Zwak; and five siblings, Herbert Zwak, William Zwak, Jennie Hecht, Gerrit Zwak and Wilhelmina Vogelzang.
