Funeral services for Jake Baartman, 59, Rock Valley farmer who died of a heart attack April 10, were held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Porter funeral home In Rock Valley and at 1:30 p.m. at the Christian Reformed church, Rock Valley. Rev. John Byker officiated and burial was in the Valley View cemetery. Mr. Baartman was stricken while operating his tractor on land he was farming near his own farm. His body was discovered by a son Wednesday night.
He was born June 11, 1903, near Orange City, Iowa, and married Bertha Van Maanen January 29 1925, at Rock Valley. He had farmed at Rock Valley ever since.
Survivors include the widow, five sons, Gerald, Wiliis, Bernard and Roger, all of Sioux Falls, and Lawrence of Rock Valley; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Vander Plas of Hawardcn, Iowa, and Miss Betty Jane Baartman of Rock Valley; seven grandchildren; six brothers, and three sisters.

Bertha Baartman, 81, of Rock Valley died Sunday, December 14, 1986, in a hospital in Rock Valley. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, in the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Rev. Fred Gunnink officiated. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery under direction of Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Mrs. Baartman, the former Bertha Van Maanen, was born December 17, 1904, in Rock Valley. She married Jake Baartman January 29, 1925, in Rock Valley. The couple farmed in the Rock Valley area until his death April 10, 1963. She moved into Rock Valley in 1965. Mrs. Baartman was a member of Martha Circle of the First Christian Reformed Church.
Survivors include four sons, Gerald and Willis, both of Sioux Falls, SD, Roger of Saugus, CA, and Lawrence of Rock Valley; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Theresa) Vander Plas of Hawarden and Mrs. William (Betty Jane) Vis of Gallatin Gateway, MT; 28 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren.

Private Herbert Baartman, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Baartman of Rock Valley, died early Sunday morning April 7th, of pneumonia at the army hospital at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was ill for about five days, entering the hospital on Wednesday, April 3, and before he passed away he lapsed into unconsciousness.
Private Baartman had entered the army not so long ago and was home for a few hours about two weeks ago on a short leave. His father flew to Fort Lewis after receiving a telegram stating that his son was gravely ill, but he did not reach him in time. An aunt and uncle living in Oregon arrived before he died but he had already lapsed into unconsciousness before they came.
Herbert was born April 1, 1927, near Rock Valley and attended rural schools in that vicinity. He is survived by his parents and five brothers and two sisters: Gerald, Willis Bernard, Roger, Tressa, Lawrence, and Betty Jane. One brother died two years ago.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 13, at the home at 1:30 and at the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, in charge of Reverend J. H. Kuiper. The military escort was Pvt. John Van Maanen, and the color guard was from the American Legion Post at Rock Valley. Pall bearers were John Van Maanen, Gerrit Van Maanen, Henry Van Sloten and Gerrit Van Otterloo.

Gerald Baartman, son of Jake and Bertha (Van Maanen) Baartman, was born April 13, 1929 at Rock Valley, Iowa. He was united in marriage with Til Klomp on Monday evening, February 14, 1949 at the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, IA. The temperature was 20 below zero and it had snowed 10-12 inches that day. The couple had a real candlelight wedding as the lights went out just before the wedding service. They had to use the piano instead of the organ and half way through the ceremony the fuse was replaced and the lights came on. Art Kooima sang a solo, "Bless This House." Lori Van Laar was Til's bridesmaid and Willis Baartman was Gerald's best man. They went to Spencer, IA for a three day honeymoon.
Til had saved $1000 to buy new furniture before she got married. Together they worked for a farmer for the first year and then farmed for a year at Fairview, SD before moving to Minnesota where they farmed for ten years. In 1960 they had a farm sale and moved to Sioux Falls, SD. Gerald began working for John Morrell & Company and they joined Sioux Falls Christian Reformed Church. Til remembered that everyone in the congregation was assigned turns sitting in the basement of the church on 12th Street and Dakota Avenue where they had closed circuit television because of increased membership. They soon built a new church which is located on the current site on 26th Street.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Til on May 19, 2003; his son, Don; and five brothers, John, Herbert, Bernard, Willis, and Lawrence.
John Harlan, the 5 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Baartman, died in the Le Mars hospital about 11:00 o'clock Friday morning. He was born October 18, 1938. The child was up and around until Thursday morning although he had suffered with headaches and gland trouble. He was taken to the Sacred Heart hospital Thursday evening. The child suffered from diabetes.
John Harlan is survived by his parents, six brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held at the Christian Reformed church Tuesday.
Lawrence Baartman, age 60, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at Hegg Memorial Hospital, Rock Valley. Funeral services were 1:30 p.m., Thursday the 25th at First Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Reverend Dan DeGroot officiated. Interment was at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley.
Lawrence Allen Baartman was born June 19, 1943, to Jake and Bertha (Van Maanen) in Rock Valley. He was united in marriage to Wanda De Leeuw on January 11, 1965, in Boyden, IA. Lawrence farmed southwest of Rock Valley. He was a member of the Sioux County Extension Board, Sioux County Cattle Feeders, and Rock Valley Christian School Board. Lawrence was an Elder and Deacon at First Christian Reformed Church.
He enjoyed collecting 1/16" tractors, working on his Allis Chalmers "WC," his family, and especially, his grandkids.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda; sons: Mike (Tammy) of Rock Valley and Terry (Brenda) of Le Mars, IA; daughter, Janelle Baartman of Rock Valley; 5 grandchildren: Kim, Leah, Joel; Caleb, and Dillan Baartman; brothers: Gerald of Sioux Falls and Roger of Canyon Country, C A; sisters: Teresa (Ken) Vander Plas of Hawarden and Betty (Rev. Bill) Vis of Colton, SD.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Bernard, John, Herbert, and Willis; sisters-in-law: Til and Jan Baartman.

Wanda Eileen Baartman, 77, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral service will be held Friday, May 20, at 10:30 AM at First Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley with Rev. Matthew Haan officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Thursday, May 19, at First CRC of Rock Valley from 5:00-7:00 PM. Memorials may be given to Orphan Grain Train. Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley is assisting the family with arrangements.
Wanda Eileen Baartman, daughter of Paul and Jennie (Kuiper) De Leeuw, was born on a farm near Middleburg, Iowa on September 23, 1944. She was a graduate of Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa. Wanda was united in marriage with Lawrence Baartman on January 11, 1965, in Boyden, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm southwest of Rock Valley, Iowa where they raised their three children. Lawrence died March 22, 2004, and Wanda moved into Rock Valley.
In addition to being a homemaker, Wanda worked part-time as a nurse's aid in Rock Valley and later worked at K-Products in Orange City, Iowa. She also worked part-time at Boehringer Ingelheim in Sioux Center, Iowa. Wanda had a passion for using her talents of sewing and knitting and bringing items to the Orphan Grain Train at Ida Grove, Iowa. She made items such as diapers, baby blankets, caps, and dresses. She enjoyed attending grandchildren's events, had a heart for helping others, and liked flowers and gardening. Wanda was a member of First Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley.
Wanda is survived by her three children, Mike (Tammy) Baartman of Rock Valley, Terry (Brenda) Baartman of Le Mars, Iowa, and Janelle (Jeremy) Brower of Inwood, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Kimberly Baartman, Leah (Glenn) Walls, Joel Baartman, Caleb (Megan) Baartman, Dillan Baartman, Mitchell Baartman, Kendra Baartman, Addi Brower, Chase Brower, and Tyler Brower; and three siblings, Beth De Leeuw of Orange City, John (Kathy) De Leeuw of Byron Center, Michigan and Ed (Nancy) De Leeuw of Orange City.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Jennie De Leeuw; husband, Lawrence Baartman; and niece, Sandi (De Leeuw) Lautenbach.
