Obituaries of Hendrik Jan en Aaltje

Henry J. Van De Weerd, son of Henry Van De Weerd and Jennie Vonk, born September 28 1888, Ede, Netherlands, passed away at the Bellwood hospital, Bellflower, Calif., as the result of a heart attack.

Mr. Van De Weerd is survived by his wife, Alice, and six children Janet Bartman of Bellflower, Mabel Schemper of Sheldon, Clarence of Alta, Ia., Lorraine Loffredo of La Puente, Calif., Chester of Rock Valley and Franklin of Hanaheim.

He was preceded in death by three children, Albert, 29, and two infant children. Mr. Van De Weerd was the oldest of 13 brothers and sisters. He also leaves nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mr. Van De Weerd married Alice Bonthuis January 12, 1915. Mr. Van De Weerd spent the greater part of his life in Rock Valley both as a farmer and barber.

Funeral services were held in the Rock Valley First Reformed church, January 1. Rev. Poppen officiated.

Alice Bonthuis Vande Weerd Vonk, 92, of Sioux Center, died Tuesday in the Sioux Center nursing wing. Services will be held Thursday in Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center with the Rev. Norman Van heukelom officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley under direction of the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

The former Alice Bonthuis, was born June 24, 1897 in Rock Valley, the daughter of Albert and Tena (Mulder) Bonthuis. She lived her youth in Rock Valley and attended school there. She married Henry J. Vande Weerd Jan. 12, 1915 in Rock Valley. He died Dec. 26, 1962 in Bellflower, Calif. On Jan. 2, 1970 she married Ben Vonk Sr. in Sioux Center.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Clarence H. Vande Weerd of Orange City, Chester L. Vande Weerd of Rock Valley and Franklin D. Vande Weerd of Anaheim, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Henry J. (Janet) Ranschau of Rock Valley, and Mrs. Mike (Lorraine) Loffedo of Candiss, Calif.; a daughter-in-law; three brothers, Al Bonthuis of Rock Valley, Pete Bonthuis of Orange City and Fred Bonthuis of Bellflower, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Dena) Boone of Orange City and Mrs. Dorothy Kuiper of Orange City; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; 11 stepchildren and a host of stepgrandchildren and stepgreatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband; two sons, two daughters, one great-grandchild and two brothers.

ALDERT VANDE WEERD

Rock Valley: Funeral services for Aldert Vande Weerd were held Tuesday afternoon at the home and at the First Reformed Church. He died Saturday, December 8, in Long Beach, Calif., of a shotgun wound.

Aldert, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Vande weerd, jr. was born July 11, 1916, on a farm west of Rock Valley. He was a graduate of the Rock Valley Public School.

He was married September 17, 1938, to Delma Brandts at the Spencer Fair. At that time he was employed by the Booth and Olson Construction Co. Since then, he served for a time in the Navy, and had been living at Long Beach, Calif.

Surviving are his wife and infant daughter, his mother and father, three sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Roy Bartman, Mrs. Ed Schemper, both of Sheldon, and Mrs. Michael Lafreddo of California, Clarence Vande Weerd of the U.S. Marine Corps, and Chester and Franklin Vande Weerd at home.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Vande Weerd received word December 8 that Aldert had been shot in the abdomen at about 7 o'clock Wednesday evening while he was returning home from work in a market at Long Beach. He was then reported in a serious condition. Saturday evening a telephone message informed them that he had died at 3:30 Saturday afternoon. The circumstances explaining it so far as possible was to be sent later.

Obituaries of Leona and Clarence

Leona Vande Weerd, 73, of Orange City, formerly of Rock Valley, died Sunday, July 20, 1997 at the Orange City Hospital. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 24 at the First Reformed Church at Rock Valley. The Rev. Harlan De Jong and the Rev. Ralph Pontier officiated. Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery under the direction of the Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

Leona was born Feb. 8, 1924 at Rock Valley, the daughter of Nick and Johanna (Kaas) Vander Meulen. After graduating from Rock Valley Public High School, she worked at Valley State Bank in Rock Valley, and then for Keeler Brass at Grand Rapids, Mich.

She married Clarence Vande Weerd on Nov. 15, 1946 at Rock Valley. The couple lived south of Rock Valley before farming near Brewster, Bigelow and Ord, Minn. They later farmed near Aurelia and Alta before retiring to Orange City in 1980. Mrs. Vande Weerd was a member of Country Ramblers Women's Club and Coffee Break Bible Study group of the Redeemer Alliance Reformed Church.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence of Orange City; two sisters, Barbara Bottger and Margaret Muehlethaler, both of Bellflower. Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. Renzella Klein and Clazena Kuiper.

Memorials will be directed to Christian education.

Clarence Vande Weerd, age 80, died Monday, August 27, 2001 at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 31 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Burial was at the Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley. Rev. Mike Van Hamersveld officiated. Visitation was on Thursday with family present from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Clarence Vande Weerd was born on February 8, 1921 in Rock Valley, son of Henry and Alice (Bonthuis) Vande Weerd. He attended country school and Rock Valley Comm. HS. After school, Clarence joined the Marine Corp and served during WWII in the South Pacific.

Upon returning from the Marines, Clarence married Leona Vander Meulen on November 15, 1946 in Rock Valley. Together they lived south of Rock Valley before farming near Brewster, Bigelow and Ord, MN. They later farmed near Aurelia and Alta, IA before retiring to Orange City, IA in 1980. Leona died on July 20, 1997. Clarence moved to the Four Seasons of Rock Valley in August of 2000, and then to the Valley Manor in July of 2001. Clarence enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and especially fishing at their cabin on Lake Okoboji.

Surviving relatives include 2 brothers and their wives, Chester and Frances of Rock Valley, Franklin and Myrna of Coeur D Alene, ID, one sister, Janet Ranchau of Sioux Falls, SD, many nieces and nephews.

Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Leona, his parents, 2 brothers, Al and infant Gerrit, 3 sisters, Lorraine, Mabel and infant Loretta.

Obituary of Lorraine

Lorraine Loffredo, 64, formerly of Rock Valley, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 1990 in her home in Cardiff-By-The-Sea, Calif. Lorraine Vande Weerd was born Sept. 2, 1925, in Rock Valley.

She married Michael Loffredo Oct. 26, 1945, in Luverne, Minn. They lived in Rock Valley until 1952, when they moved to Oklahoma. They lived in New Mexico before moving to California in 1954 and Cardiff-By-The-Sea in 1977. She was a property auditor for the U.S. Defense Department until illness forced her retirement in June.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7 in Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery.
