Obituaries of Jacoba and Harmen

Mrs. Herman Vande Weerd, nee Cora Kuhl was born at Sioux Center, November 24th, 1895. She was united in marriage Dec. 4 1912. To this union 10 children were born. Mrs. Van De Weerd was taken to Sacred Heart hospital at LeMars, March 5 and died March 8 at the age of 58 years, 3 months, and 12 days. Besides her husband and children there are 14 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, three sisters, Della, Mrs. Clauss Lutjens, Hills, Minn., Jennie, Mrs. Henry Vande Vegte, Rock Rapids, Anna Brands, Orange City, four brothers, John, Montrose, Fred, Bellflower, Calif., George, Hardwick, Minn, and Charley, Slayton, Minn.

Funeral services were held Friday from the Bernie Meendering home at Hull and from the Baptist church in Sioux Center, with Rev. R. Mulder, in charge. Pallbearers were nephews of deceased. Burial was made in the Hull cemetery.

Kraai and Van Etten were in charge of arrangements.

Herman Vande Weerd, 74, of Sioux Center, died Tuesday, June 9, at the Sioux Center Nursing Wing of the hospital where he had made his home for several years. Funeral services were held Friday, June 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Vander Ploeg's Funeral Home with the Rev. Marion De Jong officiating. Burial was in the Hull cemetery.

Mr. Vande Weerd was born October 1, 1891, in The Netherlands. He married Jacoba Kuhl. She preceded him in death. He was a former Rock Valley resident and well known in this area.

He is survived by four daughters; five sons; two brothers, Guy of Bellflower, Calif., and John of Stockton, Ill,; six sisters, Mrs. Gertie Sneller of Sioux Center, Mrs. Minnie Franken and Mrs. Gerrit Wissink of Rock Valley, Mrs. Jennie Kooiker of Hull, Mrs. Henry Wesselink of Hull and Mrs. Frank Gunnick of Healsburg, Calif.; 28 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

Obituaries of Jennie and Bernard

Jennie Timmer, 72, of Doon, died Tuesday, February 18, in a hospital in Rock Rapids. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 21, in the First Congregational Church in Doon. The Rev. Tim Mason officiated. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery at Doon.

Mrs. Timmer, the former Jennie Vande Weerd, was born November 26, 1913, in Rock Valley and attended Rock Valley Community School. She married Bernard J. Timmer July 29, 1929, in Canton, S.D. They lived in Rock Valley and Ireton before moving to Doon in 1941. Mrs. Timmer was a member of the First Congregational Church.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Lindy (Martha) Kruger of George; five brothers, Ray of Payette, Idaho, Fred of Orange City, Lockie of Cassel, Calif., and Charles and Thomas; two sisters, Mrs. Arie (Delia) Boscaljon of Rock Rapids and Mrs. Dexter (Mary Alice) Brantzeg of Blackfoot, Idaho; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Bernard J. Timmer, 85, of Doon, Iowa died Wednesday, April 17, 1991 following a heart attack at the Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at the First Congregational Church of Doon, Iowa. Rev. Ed Van Holland officiated. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery of Doon. Visitation was held at the Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.

Bernard J. Timmer was born near Appledoorn, Netherlands on May 19, 1905. He was the son of William and Martha (Baak) Timmer. He came to America at an early age to the Rock Valley area.

Bernard married Jennie Van De Weerd on July 29, 1929 at Canton, South Dakota. Together they lived at Rock Valley and Ireton before moving to Doon in 1941. Bernard drove truck for a rendering service 37 years before his retirement. Jennie died February 18, 1986.

Surviving relatives include his daughter, Mrs. Lindy (Martha) Kruger of George, Iowa; two brothers, Peter and George, both of Rock Valley; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, William and Martha; his wife, Jennie; his daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Paul Johnson; a great granddaughter, Melisa Johnson; and two infant great-grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, Jacob and Sally Timmer, and his sister, Henrietta Van Maanen.

Obituaries of Fred and Henrietta
Mr. Fred Vander Weerd, age 86, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010, at the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. Fred was born on May 21, 1924, at Rock Valley, the son of Harmen and Jacoba (Kuhl) Vande Weerd. He was raised at Rock Valley and Perkins. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy.

On February 26, 1946, he married Henrietta Joan De Groot in Middleburg. They made their home in Orange City, where he was a brick layer and stone mason. He was employed by Kepp Construction in Orange City and De Stigter Construction in Sioux Center. In 1964, he became a partner in Fischer and Vander Weerd Masonry. Gerry Fischer was a friend he viewed as a true kindred spirit. Fred and Henrietta moved to Landsmeer Ridge in December of 2005. He was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he had served as a deacon. He was also a lifetime member of the Pressman-Kosters Amercian Legion Post in Orange City. Reading was his favorite pastime.

Survivors include his wife of more than 64 years; three children and their spouses, Ron and Trudy Vander Weerd, of Peosta, Iowa; Brenda and Bill Cohn, of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Daryl and Lorys Vander Weerd, of St. Louis, Missouri; five grandchildren, Brittani Vander Weerd, Matthew Tonjes, Megan Tonjes, Bryant Vander Weerd, and Eric Vander Weerd; a step-granddaughter, Christine Bellavia; a sister, Mary Alice Brantzog, of California; and two brothers, Lockie Vande Weerd, of California, and Tom Vande Weerd.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Jennie Timmer, Della Boscaljon, Esther Vande Stouwe, and Hazel Willemstein; and two brothers Ray Vande Weerd and Charlie Vande Weerd.

Henrietta Vander Weerd, age 95, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at the Orange City Area Health System. Henrietta Joan Vander Weerd was born on March 11, 1923, in rural Boyden, the daughter of Henry and Jennie (Kreykes) De Groot. She was raised in the Middleburg area, where she attended the Capel Country School No. 5. She graduated from the Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City in 1941 and attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, earning a teaching certificate in 1942. She then taught classes to the first four grades in the Capel Country School No. 4.

On February 26, 1946, she married Fred Vander Weerd at the Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg. They made their home in Orange City, where she was a homemaker. She was also employed at the Orange City Municipal Hospital for 21 years, serving as a nurses' aide, ward secretary, and emergency medical technician. In December of 2005, they moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, where Fred passed away on August 30, 2010.

Mrs. Vander Weerd was a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City, where she belonged to the Priscilla Circle and participated in Bible studies. She was also a member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post Auxiliary in Orange City. She enjoyed doing counted cross stitch, crocheting, making homemade cards, and sharing her benevolent spirit with the community through baking and comforting those in need.

Survivors include her three children and their families, Ron and Trudy Vander Weerd, of Ft. Myers, Florida, and their children, Brittani Vander Weerd, of Dubuque, and Christine Bellavia, and her son, Collin, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Brenda and Bill Cohn, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and their children, Matthew Tonjes, of Lincoln, and Megan and Christopher Bettel, of Redmond, Washington; and Daryl and Lorys Vander Weerd, of St. Louis, Missouri, and their children, Bryant and Lisa Vander Weerd, of Denver, Colorado, and Eric Vander Weerd, and his girlfriend, Deanna Barger, of Columbia, Missouri; a brother, Marvin (Bud) De Groot, of Morgan Town, West Virginia; and her special friends, Harold and Rose Vander Weide, of Orange City.

In addition to her parents and husband, Fred, she was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Betty De Groot.

Obituary of Mary Alice

Mary Alice Brantzeg, 83, lost her battle with cancer April 21, 2018 at her home in Rigby, Idaho surrounded by her loving family. Mary Alice was born July 31, 1934 in Perkins (Hull) Iowa to Herman Van De Weerd and Jacoba "Cora" Kuhl Van De Weerd. She was the youngest of 10 children and attended school in Perkins.

She married Richard Lange, from this union 3 children were born, Donna, LeRoy and Mike. They were later divorced. She later married Frederick Schmidt to this union was born 3 daughters, Sheila, Debbie, Rhonda. They were later divorced. She married Richard Lansdowne to this union 1 daughter was born, Viola. They were later divorced. She married Grant Petersen in San Jose, California and together they moved their family to Archer, Idaho. This is the BEST move Mom made for all of her children. She later divorced Grant. She met and married Dexter Brantzeg and had started a new adventurous chapter of her life. After Dexter passed away she met Darrell Ard, they were Best friends and companions.

She loved traveling, dancing, crafts, sewing, motor cycling, four wheeling, camping, listening to old country music, and having yard sales. Her favorite place she wintered was Overton, Nevada. She was a life time member of the VFW AUX. In her travels she loved meeting many wonderful people in which many became her best friends.

Mary Alice is survived by her daughters, Donna (Bobby) Smout of Challis, Idaho, Sheila (Jim) Simon of Menan, Idaho, Debbie (Morgan) Anderson of Thornton, Idaho, Rhonda Schmidt of Rigby, Idaho, Viola Lansdowne Fallis of Idaho Falls, Idaho, sons, LeRoy (Diane Hubble) Lange of Idaho Falls, Mike Lange of Tacoma, Washington, a brother Lockie Van De Weerd of Redding, California, as well as 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded by her parents, her husband, 4 sisters, 4 brothers, and her best friend and companion Darrell Ard.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date this summer. She lived life to the fullest and did a lot with it. Her greatest joy in life were her children and dancing.
