Alice Vande Weerd, age 80, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley. Funeral services were at 10:30-a.m. Saturday, August 30 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley with Rev. Michael Van Hamersveld officiating. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley.
Alice Vande Weerd was born on June 27, 1923, in Volga, SD, daughter of Peter and Hilda(De Groot) Lengkeek. She was raised and attended school in Volga. Alice came to Rock Valley to care for her aunt and uncle.
Alice married Arthur Vande Weerd on April 20, 1942, in Dakota City, NE. They lived in Rock Valley. Alice worked as a homemaker and later, from 1957 to 1988, as Head Cook for the Rock Valley Community School System. Arthur died on November 25, 1971.
Alice married Jack Vande Weerd on October 17, 1973, in the Pioneer United Methodist Church in Rock Valley. After retiring from her position at the Rock Valley Community School; Alice kept busy working at the Towne House and the Rock Valley Golf Club. Alice had many hobbies including sewing, crocheting, cooking, and camping. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Surviving relatives include her husband Jack and 10 children and spouses, Ron (Helen) Vande Weerd of Jacksonville, FL; Alan (Emilie) Vande Weerd of Sac City, IA; Dorothy (Henry) Sage of Jacksonville, FL; John (Noreen) Vande Weerd of Orange City, IA; Bonnie (Rod) Kooima of Inwood, IA; Carol (Dennis) Doherty of Inwood; Sharon Vande Weerd of Rock Valley; Gloria (Brad) Koele of Moville, IA; Gary (Elaine) Vande Weerd of Sioux Center, IA; Tom (Jody) Vande Weerd of Rock Rapids, IA; 24 Grandchildren; 22 Great-grandchildren.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Arthur Vande Weerd; 4 brothers, Arie, Bill, George, and Dean; one grandson, Travis Doherty.
Bonnie Jo Kooima, 64, of Inwood, Iowa, died unexpectedly on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at her home in Inwood. Funeral services will be Monday, February 20, at 10:30 AM at Inwood First Reformed Church with Rev. Rob Horstman officiating. Burial will follow at Richland Cemetery of Inwood. Visitation, with the family present, will be Sunday, February 19, at Porter Funeral Home of Inwood from 3:00-5:00 PM. Memorials may be given to Inwood First Reformed Church and condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Bonnie Jo (Vande Weerd) Kooima, daughter of Arthur and Alice (Lengkeek) Vande Weerd, was born February 29, 1952 in Rock Valley, Iowa. She was united in marriage with Rodney Kooima on October 24, 1969. The couple made their home in Inwood, Iowa. Bonnie received her Associates of Nursing from Presentation College in Aberdeen, South Dakota and she went on to serve as a Registered Nurse for Sanford for 25 years working in adult and neonatal intensive care. She enjoyed participating in ladies groups, playing cards with family and friends, crocheting, gardening, traveling and reading.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Rodney Kooima; daughter, Lisa (Mark) Wheeler of Inwood; siblings, Ron (Helen) Vande Weerd of Jacksonville, Florida, and Alan (Emilie) Vande Weerd of Sac City, Iowa; step-siblings, John (Noreen) Vande Weerd of Orange City, Iowa, Carol (Dennis) Doherty of Inwood, Iowa, Gloria (Brad) Koele of Moville, Iowa, Gary (Elaine) Vande Weerd of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Tom (Jody) Vande Weerd of Rock Rapids, Iowa; 4 grandchildren, Dustin, Alyssa, Katelyn, and Erika Van Beek; and great-granddaughter, Addison Van Beek.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Alice; step-father, John "Jack" Vande Weerd; sister, Dorothy Sage; and step-sister, Sharon Vande Weerd.
