Hattie Vande Weerd
Hattie Vande Weerd, 92, formerly of Hospers, died Tuesday, November 10, at Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 13, at First Presbyterian Church in Hospers with the Rev. Brian Janssen officiating. Burial was in East Memorial Cemetery at Hospers.
The former Hattie Hulst was born June 8, 1900, in Alton, the daughter of Nick and Alice Hulst. She married John Vande Weerd August 31, 1916, in Hospers. The couple lived on a farm near Alton. He died March 9. 1959 and she moved to Hospers in March 1966. She entered the nursing home in Orange City in April 1990. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hospers.
Survivors include two sons and their wives. Bert and Hermine of Alton and Harold and Dorothy of Alton; four daughters, Alice Vande Weerd of Orange City, Annetta and her husband Donald Lammers of Alton, Harriet and her husband Albert Koolker of Hull and Tracia and her husband, Dick Morren of Beresford, South Dakota; a daughter-in-law, Clara Vande Weerd of Bruce, South Dakota; a brother, Ralph Hulst of Austin, Minnesota; 24 grandchildren; and 53 great-grandchildren.
Clara Vande Weerd, age 87 of Brookings, died on December 30, 2012 at the Brookings Hospital. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 P.M. on Friday, January 4, 2013 at First Reformed Church in Volga, SD. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at First Reformed Church with burial to follow in Trinity Cemetery at Volga.
Clara was born on January 25, 1925, in Sioux County, IA, the daughter of Herman and Anna (Brummel) Kooiker. Clara received her education in rural school in Sioux County, IA. She was united in marriage to Nick Vande Weerd on February 11, 1948. After their marriage, they farmed near Middleburg, IA until 1951, when they moved to White, SD. In 1958, they moved to Bruce and in 1960 to California, returning to Alton, IA in 1962. In 1963, they returned to Bruce, where together they farmed for many years. She remained on the farm until the fall of 2012. Clara also cleaned houses for many families while still helping on the farm. Nick died on December 28, 1988. Clara was a very active member of the First Reformed Church in Volga. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and was known for her homemade popsicles and her chocolate covered mints. She was a great advocate for her grandchildren and great grandchildren and followed all of their activities.
She is survived by her children John (Linda) Vande Weerd of Bruce, SD, Anna Joy (David) Johanson of Valley Springs, SD, Lee (Sandy Probst) Vande Weerd of Bruce, SD, Joyce (Loryn) Klumper of Wahpeton, ND, Rich (Julie) Vande Weerd of Bruce, SD; 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren: Michael (Connie VerHoek) Vande Weerd and Nathan. Marie (Tom) Schmit and Kiana, Kaylee, Kendallyn. Nichole (Brian) Franklin. Nicklaus Vande Weerd. Alan (Amy) Vande Weerd and Chloe, Ava, and Owen. Kristie Happeny, David and Charlotte. Mr. Donald Lammers, age 86, of Alton, passed away on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at
the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
There will be a funeral service on Monday, October 8, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed
Church in Orange City.
The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate.
Interment will follow at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton.
Visitation will be after 3:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 3:00pm to 5:00pm,
at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Donald Richard was born on October 12, 1925, at Alton, the son of John and Etta (Van't Hul) Lammers. He was raised at Alton, where he graduated from high school in 1943. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II.
On June 24, 1949, he married Annetta Vande Weerd in Hospers. They made their home near Alton, on the same homestead where he was born and raised. He later went on to raise his own family and retire there. He and his father established and operated Lammers Repair at this same location. He then served as the United States Postmaster for Alton, and more recently, he and members of his family operated Green Acres Greenhouse. In June of this year, he and Annetta went to reside with their son, Greg, and his wife, Jeanne, near Craig.
Don was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he had taught Sunday school and catechism classes. He also belonged to the Floyd American Legion Post in Alton, serving as commander and as adjutant for several years. He enjoyed sports, especially basketball, baseball, and golf, and he was a talented handyman, who built much of his house.
Survivors include his wife of more than 63 years; two sons, Kevin Lammers, of Oyens; and Gregory Lammers, and his wife, Jeanne, of Le Mars; a daughter-in-law, Deanna Lammers, of Alton; seven grandchildren, Tamela Van Kalsbeek; Army Chief Warrant Officer Michele Lammers; Jonathan Lammers; Jeffrey Lammers; Jennifer, and her husband, Jacob Shipp; Gregory Lammers, and his wife, Dena; and Air Guard Senior Airman Jason Lammers; five great-grandchildren, Cameron Van Kalsbeek, Kylie and Kaleb Shipp, and Rose and Colton Lammers; and four sisters-in-law, Harriet (Al) Kooiker, of Hull; Tracia (Dick) Morren, of Beresford, South Dakota; Clara Vande Weerd, of Volga, South Dakota; and Ruth Vande Weerd, of Mazeppa, Minnesota.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Lammers; two sisters, Mina (Cornie) Harmelink and Jenny (Herman) Oordt; three brothers-in-law, Bert (Hermine) Vande Weerd, Nick Vande Weerd, and Harold (Dorothy) Vande Weerd; and a sister-in-law, Alys Vande Weerd.
Annetta LammersMrs. Annetta Lammers, age 96, of Alton, passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, June 4, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating. Interment will take place at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton, followed by a luncheon and time of fellowship at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Annetta was born on April 23, 1926, near Hospers, one of seven children born to John and Hattie (Hulst) Vande Weerd. She grew up on her family's farm south of Hospers and attended a nearby country school before graduating from the Hospers High School. She earned her teaching certificate from Westmar College in Le Mars and spent several years teaching in area country schools.
On June 24, 1949, she was united in marriage to Donald Richard Lammers in Hospers. They made their home on the Lammers homestead west of Alton, where they raised three boys. In addition to being a wife and mother, she and Don, along with other members of their family, operated the Green Acres Greenhouse for many years. In 2012, the couple moved to their son, Greg's home near Craig. Don passed away on October 3, 2012, in Le Mars, after more than 63 years of marriage. Annetta later moved into the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and in July of 2019, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars.
Mrs. Lammers was a member of the First Reformed Church, where in earlier years, she was involved with the various women's ministries and taught Sunday School. She was also an active member of the Floyd American Legion Auxiliary in Alton. She enjoyed singing, often with her husband, and liked to play the piano. She was an excellent cook and baker, and frequently used her skills in the kitchen for Sunday meals with her children and grandchildren with whom she loved to spend time.
She is survived by two sons, Kevin Lammers, and his friend, Cletus Richtermeir, of Sioux City; and Gregory Lammers, and his wife, Jeanne, of Le Mars; a daughter-in-law, Deanna Lammers, of Alton; seven grandchildren, Tamela Van Kalsbeek and Erik Scott; Chief Warrant Officer 3, Ret. Michele Lammers; Jonathan Lammers, and his wife, Jana; Jeffrey Lammers; Jennifer, and her husband, Jacob Shipp; Gregory Lammers, and his wife, Dena; and TSgt Jason Lammers, and his wife, Katie; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Tracia Morren, of La Crescent, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Ruth Vande Weerd, of Mazeppa, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Lammers; two sisters, Harriet, and her husband, Al Kooiker; and Alys Vande Weerd; three brothers and their wives, Nick and Clara Vande Weerd, Bert and Hermine Vande Weerd, and Harold and Dorothy Vande Weerd; a brother-in-law, Dick Morren; and two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Mina and Cornie Harmelink, and Jenny and Herman Oordt.
Memorials may be given to the family for future designation.

Harold Vande Weerd son of John and Hattie (Hulst) Vande Weerd, was born Jan. 12, 1930 in Alton. He was raised in the Alton-Hospers area, where he attended Floyd Township School and graduated from Newkirk High School. He married Dorothy Van Der Weide on Jan. 17, 1951 in Boyden. They made their home on a farm between Hospers and Alton, where he also operated Vande Weerd Trucking. Mrs. Vande Weerd died Jan. 12, 2001 in Orange City.
He married Ruth Reiland Staub on Jan. 15, 2005, in Mazeppa, MN. They made their home on his farm until the fall of 2007, when they moved to Hospers. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hospers, where he served as a deacon for six years. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, bird watching, watching television and attending church and cattle auctions.
Survivors include his wife; Ruth Vande Weerd of Hospers; five children, John and Darla Vande Weerd of Alton, Shirleen Post of Rock Valley, David Vande Weerd of Hospers, Arlyce and David Kroese of Nevada, and Kathy Jo and Tom Ennema of Hospers; a daughter-in-law, Crystal Vande Weerd of Orange City; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Annetta and Don Lammers of Alton, Harriet and Al Kooiker of Hull, and Tracia and Dick Morren of Beresford, S.D. a sister-in-law Clara Vande Weerd of Bruce, S.D.. He is also survived by Ruth's family three children Richard Staub of Mazeppa, MN. Danny and Virginia Staub of Mazeppa, MN; and Shirley and Jim Perrotti of Mazeppa, MN; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Staub of Pine Island, MN; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and Ruth's mother, Sarah Reiland of Mazeppa MN.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Marie Vande Weerd; a son, Harvey Vande Weerd; two brothers, Bert and Hermine Vande Weerd and Nick Vande Weerd; a sister, Alice Vande Weerd; stepson, Steven Staub; and step granddaughter, Heidi Hundorf.

Mrs. Vande Weerd was born July 20, 1930 in rural Boyden, the daughter of Arie & Jennie (Kooiker) Van Der Weide. She was raised in rural Boyden and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1947. She married Harold Vande Weerd in rural Boyden on January 17, 1951. They made their home on a farm between Hospers and Alton, where their son John now farms. In addition to farming, the couple, with their son David, owned and operated Vande Weerd Trucking. She was a homemaker and remained active in the family business until her death. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where in earlier years she and her husband belonged to the Couples Club. Her family has always been a very important part of her life. She especially enjoyed going to their summer home at Round Lake, Minnesota, cooking and going shopping with her daughters.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, John and Darla Vande Weerd and David and Crystal Vande Weerd, all of Hospers; three daughters, Shirleen Post of Rock Valley, Arlyce and her husband Dave Kroese of Nevada and Kathy Jo and her husband Tom Ennema of Hospers; six grandsons; four granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and four brothers and four sisters, Willie Vander Weide of Bellflower, CA; Clara Scholten of Sioux Center; Arthur "Bud" Van Der Weide of Wayland, MI; Geneva "Toots" Wichers of Sioux Center; LaVonne Van Middendorp of Everson, WA; Audrey Pluim of Tulare, CA; Norman Van Der Weide of Grand Rapids, MI; and Dennis Van Der Weide of Boyden.
She was preceded in death by a son Harvey Glen.
Kooiker, 86, of Hull, IA died Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. A visitation will be held at Hope Christian Reformed Church of Hull on Friday from 4-8PM, with the family present from 6-8PM. A funeral service will be held at Saturday at 1:30PM at Hope Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Todd Zuidema officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service in Hope Cemetery of Hull. The Kooiker family prefers memorials be directed to Hull Christian School or Sioux Center Home Health & Hospice.
Albert Kooiker was born on May 22, 1927 to Herman and Anne (Brummel) Kooiker in Sioux County, Iowa. He was raised near Boyden, Iowa. Al received his education through the 8th grade at Capel No. 2 rural grade school of Boyden. Albert served in the military helping with the reconstruction of Germany.
Al married Harriet Ruth Vande Weerd on June 3, 1952 at Hospers, Iowa. He farmed his entire life in the same section of land near Boyden. In 1991, Al and Harriet moved to Hull. He was a member of Hope Christian Reformed Church where he served as deacon and elder. His interests were family, traveling, reading and telling stories. Al and Harriet enjoyed spending time with good friends, Jim and Ann Wielenga. Al enjoyed water skiing into his 80's and last summer stated that he would like to have skied 'just one more time'
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Harriet of Hull; four children and their spouses: Luetta (Ken) Hyronimus of Worthing, SD, Glen (Lisa) Kooiker, Sheryl (Alan) Warntjes, Mark (Jessica) Kooiker all of Boyden; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Annetta Lammers of Alton, IA, Ruth Vande Weerd of Mazeppa, MN; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dick (Tracia) Morren of Beresford, SD as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Harriet Kooiker, age 83, of Hull, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City. There will be a funeral service on Friday, October 28, at 10:00am, at the Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Todd Zuidema will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.
Harriet Ruth was born on June 3, 1933, at Alton, the daughter of John and Henrietta (Hulst) Vande Weerd. She was raised in the Hospers area and graduated from the Newkirk High School.
On June 3, 1952, she married Albert H. Kooiker in Hospers. They made their home on a farm near Boyden until 1991, when they moved to Hull. Albert passed away on August 28, 2013 in Hull, having been married for more than 61 years. In November of 2013, Harriet became a resident of Aspen Heights Assisted Living in Hull, and one year later she moved to the Prairie Ridge Care Center. Mrs. Kooiker was a member of the Hope Christian Reformed Church. She loved her family, especially holding the babies. While in memory care, she was holding her baby great-granddaughter, Charlee, and didn't want to give her back to her mother, Julie. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and Justice for All in Rock Valley. She enjoyed farming, especially driving her tractor, baking for her loved ones, gardening, picking strawberries, camping, and traveling.
Survivors include her four children and their spouses, Luetta and Ken Hyronimus, of Worthing, South Dakota; Glen and Lisa Kooiker, Sheryl and Alan Warntjes, and Mark and Jessica Kooiker, all of Boyden; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Annetta Lammers, of Orange City, and Tracia, and her husband Dick Morren, of Beresford, South Dakota; a sister-in-law, Ruth Vande Weerd, of Mazeppa, Minnesota; many nephews and nieces; and her good friends Jim and Ann Wielenga.

Dick Morren was born in Oostendorp near Elburg, in the Netherlands, on June 10, 1930 to Evert Jan and Grietje (Doornewaard) Morren. He attended school for three years due to Germany's occupation of the Netherlands during World War II. The focus during those WWII years was family survival. Dick came to America alone at the age of 18, unable to speak a word of English. Dick worked for two years as a farm hand in Northwest Iowa to pay off his boat ticket. He continued to work as a farm hand until he volunteered to become a member of the United States Marine Corps. While serving in the Marines in the territory of Alaska, Dick became a citizen of the United States.
Dick married Tracia VandeWeerd on January 14, 1954 at the Presbyterian Church in Hospers, IA. Dick and Tracia rented various farms in SD before renting a farm near Hospers from 1963 to 1975. They eventually bought a farm and moved the family to the Beresford, SD area in 1975. That farm is still in the family today. He moved to Bethesda Nursing Home of Beresford in August of 2016 where he enjoyed several activities especially music, coffee, and friends. Tracia moved to Bethesda Inn shortly after to be nearby.
Dick and Tracia enjoyed many things during their years together, including various church activities with many family and friends, card club, dancing, ballroom and square dancing, Hospers Saddle Club and traveling to the Netherlands to visit family. For Dick this was returning home at least 13 times. One trip included the whole family and they were blessed to stay at Dick's home place with his parents for six weeks. They enjoyed traveling the United States and to many other countries as well. During one memorable vacation in Berlin, Germany, Dick had the honor to chip away a portion of the Berlin Wall.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Tracia, Beresford, SD; five children, Clifford (Debra) Morren, Bennington, NE, Susan (Micheal) Calmes, Glenrock, WY, Ric (Julie) Morren, Beresford, SD, Michael Morran, LeMars, IA, and Lisa (Darren) Moser, LaCrescent, MN; ten grandchildren, Amanda (Petty Officer Rob) Steenholdt, Jordan (Dr. Amy Moreland) Morren, Sarah (Warrant Officer One Jason) Tabor, Emily Calmes, Kaleb Calmes, Brittany Moser, Jaylen Morren, Nicholas Moser, Garrett Morran and Afton Morran; and seven great-grandchildren, MaKayla, Brady, Avery, Jackson, Charlotte, Max and Ethan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings and their spouses; and many dear friends and extended family members.

Tracia was born on January 7, 1936, at Alton, Iowa, the daughter of John and Henrietta (Hulst) Vande Weerd. She was raised in the Hospers, Iowa area and graduated from the Newkirk High School. Tracia was honored to speak at their graduation ceremony. Tracia at 18 years and one week old, married her Dutchman, Dick Morren, on January 14, 1954 at the Presbyterian Church in Hospers, IA. Dick passed to Heaven September 9, 2017, having been married to the love of his life for more than 63 years. Due to Alzheimer's, in March of 2018, Tracia became a resident of Spring Brook Village of La Crescent, MN.
Tracia and Dick rented various farms short term in South Dakota before renting a farm near Hospers from 1963 to 1975. They eventually bought a farm and moved the family to the Beresford, SD area in 1975. That farm is still in the family today. Along with being a very involved farmer's wife and loving mother to her five children, Tracia also thoroughly enjoyed her role as Activity Director for 19 years at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford. Tracia and Dick enjoyed many things during their years together. These included various church activities, card club, dancing which included ballroom and square dancing and traveling to several countries with multiple trips to the Netherlands to visit family. Tracia's hobbies were crocheting, baking, going for long walks, volunteering for the Rescue Mission, singing and playing the piano and organ. Her music blessed not only her family but also her church, Bethesda and even those who lived at Spring Brook Village.
Tracia is survived by five children; Clifford (Debra) Morren, Chapman, KS, Susan (Ted Sellers) Calmes, Casper, WY, Ric (Julie) Morren, Beresford, SD, Michael (Kim) Morren, Sioux Falls, SD, Lisa (Darren) Moser, La Crescent, MN; ten grandchildren, Amanda (Rob) Steenholdt, Jordan (Amy Moreland) Morren, Sarah (Jason) Tabor, Emily (Brittany Gosnell) Calmes, Kaleb (Marie) Calmes, Brittany (Cody) Knutson, Jaylen Morren, Nicholas Moser, Garrett Morren and Afton Morran; and ten great-grandchildren, MaKayla, Brady, JaVonte, Avery, Jackson, Charlotte, Harper, Max, Ethan and Briar; sister-in-law, Ruth Vande Weerd, of Mazeppa, MN; and many nephews and nieces.
