Obituary of William Hendrik
William H. Vander Werff, 86, Sioux Center, died Tuesday night, Nov. 12, at his home. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., today (Saturday, Nov. 16) at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull, with the Rev. Carl Klompien officiating. Burial will be held prior at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. A family prayer service will be 9:30 a.m., today at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

Bill Vander Werff, son of Robert & Theadora (Rodenbaugh) Vander Werff, was born Oct. 23, 1916, near Hull. He was raised on the family farm near Hull and attended country school. As a young man, he began working as a farmer for area farmers. He married Gertrude Sneller on Dec. 4, 1946, in Sioux Center. He continued working for farmers in the Hull and Sioux Center area throughout his life, retiring in 1980. He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Hull.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Vander Werff of Sioux Center, a daughter, Nyla King of Sheldon; a brother, John & Delores Vander Werff of Sanborn; seven sisters, Tena & Bill Pollema of Hull; Grace & Cornie Hartog of Sanborn; Wilma De Wild of Hull; Esther & Dick Rozeboom of Hull; Ella Juffer of Hills, MN; Theadora & Pete Lokhorst of Hull, and Roberta & Jim Bogaard of Hull; and a sister-in-law, Stephina Vander Werff of Sanborn.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Francis King; and a brother, Cornie Vander Werff.

Gertrude Vander Werff, 95, of Sheldon died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at Sanford Sheldon Hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Jody Habinck officiating. A prayer service will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center, Iowa. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the fellowship hall of the church.

Gertrude Vander Werff was born March 2, 1916, in Sioux Center to Andrew and Nellie (Maassen) Sneller. She attended country school through eighth grade. On Dec. 5, 1945, Gert married William Vander Werff at the Sneller family home. The couple lived southeast of Hull, Iowa, until 1952. The next few years brought about moves to different area communities as William worked for several farmers. From 1961 until 1985 the couple farmed near Boyden, Iowa, before retiring to Sioux Center. William passed away in 2002. For the last nine years, Gert lived at Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon.

Gert was a caring, helpful neighbor. She loved socializing and playing all types of games. Her free time was spent reading and doing puzzles. Gert was a member of First Reformed Church of Sheldon. Previously she was a member of First Christian Reformed Church of Hull.

Survivors include her daughter, Nyla King of Sheldon; two nephews, Arlin (Beth) Sneller and Evan (Beverly) Sneller, all of Granite Falls, Minn.; members of the Vander Werff family, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John (Delores) Vander Werff of Sanborn, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Tina Pollema of Hull, Grace Hartog of Sanborn and Stephina Vander Werff of Sheldon; sisters and brothers-in-law, Esther (Dick) Rozeboom of Hull, Theadora (Pete) Lokhorst of Hull and Roberta (Jim) Bogaard of Hull; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Vander Werff; her son-in-law, Francis King; a brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Fanny Sneller; brothers-in-law, Bill Pollema, Cornie Vander Werff, Cornie Hartog and James Jansma; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ella and Albert Juffer and Wilma and Henry De Wild.
