Funeral services for Teunis Maassen, who passed away in the local hospital last week Wednesday after a long illness, were held Friday afternoon at the First Ref. Church. The Rev. R. Van Heukelom and Rev. Robert Bast officiated. Interment was made in the Maurice cemetery under the dlirection of the Van Etten Funeral Home.
Mr. Maassen was born April 29, 1893, in the Netherlands. After coming to this country, he was married to Rena Mulder March 13, l919, in Orange City. They farmed near Maurice until moving to Orange City 9 years ago. Mr. Maassen was township assessor and served as secretary treasurer of the Sherman Township Telephone Co. for many years. He was a longtime member of the church board at Maurice. He was a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include the widow; 3 daughters, Mrs. Bert Eisma of LeMars; Mrs. Wallace Muilenburg of Maurice; Mrs. Robert Sherman of Lombarb, Ill.; a son, John, of Maurice and 11 grandchildren.

She married Teunis Maassen March 13, 1919. They farmed all their life in the Maurice area until 1954 when they moved to Orange City. Teunis passed away April 1. 1964.
Rena was also preceded in death by a son, Gerrit in 1935, and by four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include a son, John of Maurice; three-daughters, Mrs. Burton (Gertrude) Eisma of Merrill, Iowa, Mrs. Wally (Henrietta) Muilenburg of Maurice, Iowa, and Mrs. Elaine Sherman of Lombard, Illinois; eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a brother Ed of Ireton; two sisters, Mrs. John Ver Meer of Boyden, and Mrs. Gertrude Douma of Orange City.

the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.
John Edward was born on July 14, 1921, at Maurice, the son of Teunis and Rena (Mulder)
Maassen.
He was raised at Maurice, where he attended a Sherman Township country school.
During World War II, he served in the United States Army.
On August 26, 1947, he married Marietta Fedders at the Alton Reformed Church. They farmed at Maurice, where he operated the Maassen Dairy Farm. In October of 1981, they moved into Orange City. On November 21, 2013, they became residents of Kosgrove Estate at Sioux Center, and on February 7, he transferred to Royale Meadows.
Mr. Maassen was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as both a deacon and an elder. He also taught catechism and Sunday school classes for 47 years. He belonged to the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post in Orange City and served on the board of directors of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Maurice and Orange City. He enjoyed reading and visiting with family and friends. Farming was what he loved to do. He was a loyal friend to many. The life he lived through his faith will be the legacy he passes on to future generations.
Survivors include his wife of more than 66 years, "Marie"; four children, their spouses, and fourteen grandchildren, Pastor Terry and Cheryl Maassen, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and their three daughters, Michelle (Dan) Brands, Sara (Curtis) Andringa, and Kristin (Mitchell) Friehe; Leroy and Emily Maassen, of Maurice, and their four children, Stacy (Wayne) Surat, Aaron (Marissa) Maassen, Adam (Ashley) Maassen, and Stefan (Miranda) Maassen; Marvin and Jacki Maassen, of Maurice, and their children, Mary Maassen, Anna Maassen, Kody Poeckes, and Jaden Poeckes; and Marcia and Lloyd Cleveringa, of Orange City; and their children, Amy (Jeff) De Boer, Eric (Jennifer) Cleveringa, and Dave Cleveringa; nineteen great-grandchildren; and a sister, Henrietta Muilenburg, of Sioux Center.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother in childhood, Gerrit Maassen; two sisters and their husbands, Gertrude and Burt Eisma and Elaine and Robert Sherman; and a brother-in-law, Wallace Muilenburg.

Henrietta Muilenburg, age 102, of Orange City, Iowa formerly of Sioux Center, Iowa and
Maurice, Iowa, passed away peacefully in the presence of her loving family on Monday,
June 23, 2025, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.
Henrietta Mae was a truly remarkable woman who led a blessed life centered around family,
faith, and service.
Born on May 12, 1923, on the Maassen family farm in rural Maurice, Henrietta was the
middle child of five born to Teunis and Rena (Mulder) Maassen.
She attended a one-room schoolhouse for two years before completing her education at
the Maurice Public School.
She was the first in her family to attend college, receiving her teaching certificate
from Northwestern Junior College in Orange City.
She taught elementary school for five years before marrying Wallace "Wally" Gordon Muilenburg on September 1, 1948, in a double wedding ceremony with Wally's sister and her husband, at the Maurice Reformed Church. Henrietta and Wally made their home on the Muilenburg family farm near Maurice, where they raised their three children. She was very active in Maurice Reformed Church, including playing the organ and teaching Sunday School.
In 1984, the couple moved to Sioux Center, but retirement was no time for rest. They were active members of the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, volunteered on multiple national and international mission work trips, and spent many enjoyable winters in Mesa, Arizona. Henrietta also worked as an aide with CHEARS Home Health and Hospice, volunteered with the VFW, and received the Community Service Award in 2012 for her volunteer work in Sioux Center. Wally passed away on May 23, 2010, in Sioux Center, after more than 61 years of marriage.
In November of 2018, Henrietta moved to Orange City, where she became a member of the First Reformed Church and enjoyed living at the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community. Since November of 2020, she has been a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center. Henrietta loved to bake bread and pies, sew and read, and never turned down an opportunity to play cards or board games. Most importantly, she loved her family and her Lord.
Survivors include her three children, Glen Muilenburg, of Metolius, Oregon; Barbara, and her husband, Steven Hanas, of DeWitt, Iowa; and Jerry Muilenburg, and his wife, Donna, of Orange City; six grandchildren, Chad (Lora) Muilenburg, Derrick (Vanessa) Muilenburg, Shauna (TJ) Korver, Tonya (Chris) Huenink, Erin (Mark Resnick) Hanas, and Julia (Peter) Hansen; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Harriet Harmelink of Newton, Iowa; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Lyndsey Hanas and Erika (Muilenburg) Hamilton; a great-grandson, Colin Muilenburg; two sisters and their husbands, Gertrude and Burt Eisma, and Elaine and Robert Sherman; and two brothers, Gerrit Maassen (in childhood), and John Maassen, and his wife, Marietta.
The family wishes to thank the staff and residents of Landsmeer Ridge and Prairie Ridge for their excellent and loving care - people who treated her like family and truly made her made her feel at home.

On September 1, 1948, Wallace married Henrietta Maassen in a double wedding ceremony with his sister, Ladene and Altena Sentner at the Maurice Reformed Church. The couple made their home on the family farm near Maurice. In 1984, they moved to Sioux Center.
Wally was a faithful member of the Maurice Reformed Church for many years before becoming a member of Sioux Center First Reformed Church. After moving to town, Wally and Henrietta did volunteer work in Brewton, Alabama, the Dominican Republic, Peurto Escandido, Mexico and Mescalero, New Mexico. The last 15 years, they enjoyed their winters in Mesa, Arizona. July 2006, Wally survived cardiac arrest and the Lord miraculously restored him. He loved to sing and sang many solos and in choirs both in Sioux Center and in Arizona. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Lyndsey Hanas and brothers-in-law, Al Bender and Claire Booher.
