He married Nellie Vande Weerd, Dec. 27, 1934, in Canton, S.D. She died in 1976. After their marriage the couple lived in Rock Valley, Boyden and Hawarden, Iowa,before coming to Sioux Falls in 1952. Rejoined the Army during World War II, serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern theater. He was employed at Reinhard Auto Parts Co. and later at Empire Auto. Mr. Vugteyeen retired in 1973. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Rock Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Yvonne) Schmuck, Sioux Falls; one grandchild; and one sister, Lyda Brandsma, Hawarden, Iowa.
Services were held at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with burial in Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley, Ia.

He married Hermina E Vane Weerd on December 13, 1943 in Idaho. He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945. He worked for many years with the Burlington Northern Railroad as a claims manager in Sioux Falls and in other locations in the Midwest. He retired in 1982. His wife died January 25, 1994.
Survivors include five children; Gergory of Colorado Springs Colorado, Randall L and Kevin, both of Cottage Grove Minnesota and Denise Mueller and Lori Engebretson, both of Woodbury, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; two brothers; and two sisters.
