Obituary of Wilhelmina
SULLY - Funeral services for Wilhelmina Vanden Berg Schuring, 81, a resident of Sully since 1955, were held today, Oct. 26, at the Sully Christian Reformed Church. The Rev. Larry Howerzyl conducted services. Burial was in Sully Cemetery. Visitation with the family was held Sunday at the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella. Memorials to the Sully Christian Grade School or Hospice of Pella will be accepted. Mrs. Schuring died Friday at the Pella Community Hospital.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Betty of Sully; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane Ann and Kenneth Steenhoek of Dener, Colo., and Betty Lou and Martin "Marty" Vander Molen of Sully; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Cornie, Sept. 9, 1991, a son, Norman Gareth, in infancy, and a sister, Artie De Groot.

Mrs. Schuring was a member of the Second Christian reformed Church of Pella until moving to Sully where she became a member of the Sully Christian Reformed Church. An avid gardener she shared her roses with many businesses in Sully. She was a member of the Sully Senior Citizens and the organization's Kitchen Band.

The daughter of George and Anna Kelderman Vanden Berg, she was born April 25, 1911 south of Pella in Marion County. She attended the Rock Island rural school near Pella. She was married to Cornie Schuring April 19, 1933 in Pella. Her husband operated a garage business in Pella, but after moving to Sully they operated a grocery store in Sully until their retirement in 1978.

Wilma Vanden Berg Hugen was born on May 16, 1922 to George and Annie Kelderman Vanden Berg in Pella, Iowa. She passed away on Sunday morning June 29, 2008 at the Pella Hospice Comfort House at the age of eighty-six.

Wilma was united in marriage with John Hugen in Pella, Iowa on August 16, 1940. To this union five children were born: Howard, Robert, James, Nancy, and Roger. John and Wilma farmed in the Peoria and Pella area for fifty-four years, retiring in 1994. They continued to live on the farm until moving to Pella in November of 2001, where she resided at the time of her death. Wilma was employed at Central College in Environmental Services for over twenty-five years. She was a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella where she was an active member of the Willing Workers Society.

Wilma is survived by her five children and their spouses: Howard and Phyllis Hugen of Pleasant Hill, Bob and Betty Hugen of Knoxville, Jim and Joyce Hugen of Oskaloosa, Nancy DuPree of Lake Worth, Florida, and Roger and Linda Hugen of Pella. She also leaves nine grandchildren: Amy and Bryan Maach, Ryan and Kelly Hugen, Troy and Brenda Hugen, Robin and Curt Vink, Chad and Kari Vander Linden, Derek and Lisa Hugen, Jason and Slyvana DuPree, Rochelle and Curt Veenstra, Dustin and Molly Hugen; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Margaret Brass and Jeanette Little.

Wilma was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, John in 2004; two grandsons: Ashley Hugen and Scott DuPree; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hugen; son-in-law, Dan DuPree; and two sisters: Wilhelmina Schuring and Artie De Groot.

Wilma spent a great deal of time working in various church organizations and doing volunteer work. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.


John E. Hugen, son of Henry and Jessie (DeVries) Hugen was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Eddyville. He passed away on July 4 at the Comfort House in Pella at the age of 81 years, ten months and twenty-two days. In his early childhood, he attended Peoria and Pella Christian Grade Schools. He was a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella.

Hugen was united in marriage with Wilma Vanden Berg in Pella on August 16, 1940. To this union five children were born. Hugen was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Bert and Raymond; a grandson, Ashley Hugen; and a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hugen.

Hugen spent a great deal of time working in various church organizations and doing volunteer work. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services were held July 8 at Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Pastors Arthur Vander Wolde and Sheldon Starkenburg officiated. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Memorials may be made to Pella Christian Grade School and Hospice of Pella.
