Roy Edward Van Maanen , 72, of Volga, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Volga.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at
First Lutheran Church in Volga.
Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the
Burrows-Young American Legion Post No. 114.
Visitations will be from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Eidsness Funeral Chapel
in Volga.
The family requests memorials be directed to the First Lutheran Church organ fund,
designated for the chime fund.
Roy was born June 19, 1930, to Ed and Evelyn (VandenBerg) Van Maanen on the family farm north of Volga. He grew up in the Volga/Bruce area and graduated from Bruce High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from January 6, 1951, until November 1954, during the Korean War.
On April, 3, 1955 he married Doris Umberger in Bruce. Roy worked at a nursery in Colton until 1956. From there he held various jobs until the early 1980's when he became the manager of the Sioux Valley bus garage. Most recently he had taken on a position as custodian of the Volga Christian School.
Roy remained active in his retirement by being a substitute bus driver, creating many beautiful wood crafts, and remaining an avid sports fan. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Volga. Roy was a member of Burrows-Young American Legion Post 114 and a volunteer fireman for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife Doris F. Van Maanen, of Volga; one son Steve and wife Pam of Redfield and their daughters Niki and Chad and great grandson Tayen; Beth and fiancé Chris Artz all of Sioux Falls; one daughter Dawn and husband Carl Vitters and their daughter, Megan of Madison, NH; a brother Ken (Jane Ann) of Brookings; a sister Sylvia (Gene Heuer) of Phoenix; a sister-in-law Lois of Davenport; cousins,nieces, nephews, and all of the bus children that affectionately called him Uncle or Grandpa Roy.

Doris Fay (Umberger) Van Maanen, age 80, passed away Saturday, November 27th at Avera Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at First Lutheran Church of Volga. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 30, 2010, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga, with family present.
Doris Umberger was born December 23, 1929 to John and Dorothy (Templin) Umberger in Lebanon, PA. She attended school in Annville, PA and graduated in 1947. In 1952, she entered the US Navy(Waves- Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) and served as a link trainer instructor. Doris served in the Korean war and was honorably discharged in April of 1955. While in the Navy, she met Roy Van Maanen of Bruce.
Roy and Doris were married on April 3, 1955 and made their home in Colton. They later moved to Volga, where they resided for 53 years. Roy and Doris had two children, Steven and Dawn. Doris worked as a grocery clerk; a clerk at Brosts fabric store; a clerk at Shrivers department store; as a cook at Elaines Cafe; and as a child care provider for many years.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Volga, where for many years, she enjoyed teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible school and participating in the choir. Doris was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Doris was an avid reader. She loved playing cards and board games, and spending time on the computer. Her most recent hobby was creating jewelry. Doris loved visiting with her friends and spending time with family, especially her four great-grandchildren.
Doris is survived by her son Steve(Pam) Van Maanen of Volga, her daughter Dawn(Carl) Vitters of Madison, NH; three grandchildren, Niki(Chad) Smidt of Brookings; Beth(Chris) Artz of Baltic; and Megan Vitters of Madison, NH; four great- grandchildren, Tayen and Delaney Smidt, Cameran and Kellen Artz; two brothers Kenneth(Esther) Umberger and Bruce Umberger of Palmyra, PA; two sisters Janice(Earl) Peiffer and Elaine(Patrick)Lynch of Myerstown, PA; a brother-in-law, Kenneth(Jane) Van Maanen Brookings, SD; and two sisters-in-law Sylvia(Eugene) Heuer of Phoenix, AZ; and Lois Van Maanen of Davenport, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roy; her brother and sister-in-law Richard(Betty) Umberger; sister-in-law Gladys Umberger; and brother-in-law, Walter Van Maanen.
Walter was employed at M. A. Ford Manufacturing for 36 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1996. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Davenport, and the American Legion, Post 482. He enjoyed walking, carpentry, HO scale model trains and camping with his special friends.
Walter Van Maanen was born Dec. 13, 1933, in Volga, S.D., to Eddie and Evelyn (Vandenberg) Van Maanen. He served in the Navy from 1953 to 1957 when he was stationed on the USS Hollister. On Sep. 6, 1958, he married Lois Shirlaw in Davenport.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Cindy, Campobello, S.C., and Randy and Sharon, Escondido, Calif.; a sister, Sylvia Heuer, Phoenix; brothers, Kenny, Brookings, S.D., and Roy, Volga, S.D.; and five grandchildren.
His parents preceded him in death.

Lois E. VanMaanen, 83, of Davenport, Iowa passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019.
Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Christ United Methodist
Church with a visitation two hours prior.
She will be laid to rest in Davenport Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Christ Church Haiti Fund.
Lois was born May 2, 1936 in Davenport, Iowa to William and Esther (Wilson) Shirlaw. September 6, 1958 Lois exchanged wedding vows with Walter VanMaanen. He preceded her in death in 2000. Before her retirement in 2015 Lois worked for Davenport Schools for forty-two years.
Lois took pride in caring for her flowers that decorated her lawn. She was a long time member of Christ United Methodist Church and enjoyed sending get well cards to her church family. In her younger years Lois and Walter loved camping at West Lake with their camping buddies. Above all she loved visiting her grandchildren whenever she was able and spending time with her friends. Lois will be remembered for her uplifting and positive attitude.
Those left cherishing her memory include her children: Jeff (Cindy) VanMaanen, and grandchildren Samantha (Brian) Graham, Zachary VanMaanen, Jorden VanMaanen, Curtis VanMaanen, Tori VanMaanen, Ben VanMaanen, Nate VanMaanen and Jared VanMaanen.
In addition to her parents and husband Lois was preceded in death by her son, Randy VanMaanen; siblings, Wilmina Henry, Bob Shirlaw, Jimmy Shirlaw, Billie Jecklin, Bonnie Hultgren, Dawny Porter, and her twin brother, Louie Shirlaw.
Kenneth D. Van Maanen was born on October 3rd, 1935 in Volga, SD to Ed and Evelyn (Vanden Berg) Van Maanen, the middle of four siblings. Ken spent his early years in the Volga and Bruce areas. He learned the meaning of hard work at a young age as he was employed on several area farms, and the Volga Co-op Creamery. Ken graduated from Bruce High School in 1954.
While attending school there, he met the love of his life, Jane Ann Kinney. They would later be united in marriage on June 23rd, 1957. Five years later they were blessed with one son, Bradley. Ken enlisted and served one tour of duty with The United States Army from 1958-1960 where he served in Heidelberg, Germany. After the Army, he was employed as an implement mechanic and shop foreman for more than twenty-five years. Ken always enjoyed challenging mechanical repairs, and showed an admirable amount of unwavering patience. He became for many, the person to call when you needed a hand to get something running. The last part of his career was spent at the Brookings Telephone Company, later known as Swiftel Communications. Ken dedicated 16 years to their supply/inventory department, prior to his retirement in the year 2000.
His Faith was something that carried him through many walks of his life. In 1962, Ken was baptized at the Brookings Christian Church where he served many years as the building maintenance director, board chairman, deacon, and church elder. Ken could always be found with a cup of coffee in hand and a good story to follow. His favorite pastimes included countless trips to the Black Hills cabin, traveling/camping, wood working, fishing, riding his tractor, and attending many SDSU Jackrabbit sporting events and MN Twins baseball games. Most of all, he enjoyed time with family, friends, and those he loved. Ken was especially proud of his four grandchildren and attended many of their events over the years.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his siblings Roy (Doris), Walter (Lois), his sister Sylvia Heuer (Gene), his Mother & Father-in-law Eugene and Ferne Kinney, and nephew Randy Van Maanen.

peacefully on February 14, 2025, at the age of 87.
A memorial visitation will be held at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings, SD, on Friday,
March 14, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

Born on May 28, 1937, in Estelline, SD, to Eugene and Ferne Kinney, Jane attended Bruce High School while also working on the family farm. She later married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Ken Van Maanen, in 1957. Together, they built a life filled with love and faith, raising their son, Brad. Jane and Ken were blessed with nearly 67 years of marriage and are now reunited once again in heaven.
Jane pursued her passion for education at General Beadle Teachers College (now Dakota State University), where she earned her teaching degree. She dedicated her life to nurturing and guiding children, both in the classroom and at home. As a beloved teacher and daycare provider for 37 years, she shaped countless young lives with patience, kindness, and a passion for learning.
Her faith was the foundation of all she did, and she lived her life as a reflection of that love and devotion. Jane was a member of Brookings Christian Church, where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school, playing piano for worship, and serving on various committees. Jane was the heart of her family - always ready with a warm meal, a listening ear, or a spirited discussion about the latest game. A true sports fan, she cheered enthusiastically for her favorite teams and never missed an opportunity to support her grandchildren in their own athletic pursuits. She had a deep love for the Black Hills and traveling. An avid gardener, baker, reader, and the ultimate hostess.
Jane is survived by her son, Brad Van Maanen (Amy), and their children: Brandon, Jordan (Alicia), Nathan, and Megan, as well as three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Carol (Marlin) Hintz, along with many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken; her parents, Eugene and Ferne Kinney; her in-laws, Ed and Evelyn Van Maanen; her brothers-in-law, Roy (Doris) Van Maanen and Walter (Lois) Van Maanen; and her sister-in-law, Sylvia(Gene)Heuer.
To know Jane was to be loved by Jane. She had a heart of pure gold and gave a piece of it to every child she taught, every family member, friend, neighbor, and even strangers. Her love was a guiding light, and though she is no longer with us, her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched.
