Sarah "Dolly" Reinsma, age 91, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, January
5, 2014, at the Prairie View Home in Sanborn.
Sarah Ann was born on March 13, 1922, in Alton, the daughter of Pier and Alyda (Kosters) Wiersma. She was raised mostly in Orange City, where she attended elementary school.
On August 24, 1943, she married Jurrian D. Reinsma in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where she was a homemaker. She also worked at the DX Coffee Shop and later operated Dolly and Jerry's Coffee Shop, both in Orange City. "Jerry" passed away on December 11, 1996, in Orange City.
About 1999, "Dolly" became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. In 2008, she transferred to assisted living at the Prairie View Home in Sanborn.
She was a member of the Redeemer United Reformed Church and an associate member of the Cornerstone United Reformed Church in Sanborn. In earlier years, she participated in the women's organizations at her church.
Mrs. Reinsma was also a member of the Birthday Club. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, and playing dominoes.
Survivors include her son and his wife, Larry and Audrey Reinsma, of Wheaton, Illinois; a daughter and her husband, Lois and Frank Russell, of Shafter, California; a son-in-law, Richard Vanden Hoek, of Sanborn; nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Wilma Foreman and Helen Huizenga, both of Orange City; and a sister-in-law, Marie Wiersma, of Redlands, California.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Lyla Beth Vanden Hoek and Leann Biesecker; a sister, Darlene White; and a brother, Kenneth Wiersma.

Lyla Vanden Hoek, daughter of Jurrian "Jerry" and Sarah "Dolly" (Wiersma) Reinsma, was born September 4, 1944, in Orange City, Iowa. She was raised in Orange City and attended Orange City Christian School and Western Christian High School in Hull. She then moved to Corsica, South Dakota, and worked as a nursing assistant at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
While working in Corsica, she met her future husband, Richard Dale Vanden Hoek. They were married January 3, 1964, in Orange City. They began their married life in Springfield, South Dakota, where he finished his teaching degree at Southern State College. They lived in Gettysburg, South Dakota, for one year, and his teaching career led them in 1966 to Sanborn, where they were living. She had a debilitating stroke on December 2, 2010.
She was an active member of First Reformed Church in Sanborn. She was the senior organist, pianist and Reformed Church Youth Fellowship sponsor, and she accompanied for special music groups. Her love of music spread over many years and many venues. She taught piano and organ; she played for high school small and large group contests, the Gloryland Quartet, and church services at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley; and she would perform organ recitals for area churches that purchased a new organ.
She was an active member of the community of Sanborn, playing and directing Easter and Christmas cantatas, babysitting for many different families, and working for 21 years as a teaching assistant at Hartley-Melvin- Sanborn Middle School. She loved being a grandmother, scrap booking, traveling, playing canasta and fellowshipping with friends during card club.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Vanden Hoek of Sanborn; three children, Douglas and Deb Vanden Hoek of Omaha, Nebraska, Tamara and Rich Unland of Indianapolis, Indiana and Crissa and Eric Krikke of Sanborn; 10 grandchildren; her mother, Sarah "Dolly" Reinsma of Sanborn; a brother, Larry and Audrey Reinsma of Wheaton, Illinois; and a sister, Lois and Frank Russell of Shatter, California.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jurrian Reinsma, and a sister, Leann Bieseker.

SANBORN - Richard Vanden Hoek, age 73 of Sanborn, IA, passed away at Sanford USD Medical
Center in Sioux Falls, SD on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017.
Richard Dale Vanden Hoek was born Dec. 30, 1943, in Douglas County, South Dakota, the
son of Marion (Mike) and Viola (Menning) Vanden Hoek.
Rich was raised in Corsica, South Dakota where he attended the rural Plainview School
in Walnut Grove Township District and graduated from Corsica High School in 1961.
After high school, Richard attended Southern State Teachers College in Springfield,
South Dakota, and graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary
Education.
Richard married Lyla Beth (Reinsma) on Jan. 3, 1964, in Orange City, Iowa. They began their married life in Gettysburg, South Dakota, where Richard had his first teaching position before moving to Northwest Iowa. He spent 22 years teaching at Sanborn Community School and finished his teaching career at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. Richard retired in 2011 after a total of 44 years in secondary education, bus driving and teaching drivers' education.
Richard was an active member of his community in Sanborn outside of teaching. He served as an elder and deacon at First Reformed Church, RCYF sponsor, Sunday School Officer and many other committees over the years. He also was a charter member at Sanborn Golf & Country Club and was the superintendent at the golf course for many years. Rich loved being a grandfather, playing cards, going for drives and having coffee at Jayâ's with his friends.
He was preceded in his death by his parents, Marion and Viola Vanden Hoek, and his wife, Beth.
Richard is survived by his three children and their families.

Leann Biesecker, daughter of Jurrian D. and Sarah Ann (Wiersma) Reinsma, was born March 23, 1958, in Orange City, where she was raised and attended Unity Christian High School and Northwestern College. She earned a master's degree at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. She then became the activities director for a nursing home in Minneapolis. She later moved to Des Moines, where she was a pharmaceutical salesperson for Cardinal Health.
Survivors include her mother, Sarah "Dolly" Reinsma of Orange City; two sisters, Beth "Lyla" and Richard Vanden Hoek of Sanborn and Lois and Frank Russell of Wasco, California; and a brother, Larry and Audrey Reinsma of Wheaton, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jurrian D. "Jerry" Reinsma.
