Obituary of Otto

Dr. Otto K. Van Roekel, 88, of Aledo, Illinois, died April 1, 2011, at Aledo Health & Rehab.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. June 12, at Reynolds Methodist Church.

Dr. Van Roekel was born September 22, 1922, in Orange City, Iowa, to Otto and Grace (Pals) Van Roekel.

He attended Sioux Falls Business College and Northwestern College, Iowa, prior to enlisting in the World War II Naval ROTC in 1943. After attending Northwest Missouri State, Harvard and Columbia University, he was commissioned as a Naval communications officer aboard an LST-2 assigned as port director Jinsen, Korea, until discharged July 1946.

Dr. Van Roekel graduated from Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1951 and practiced his profession in Mercer and lower Rock Island counties 44 years at Aledo Veterinary Clinic for large and small animal care.

During his career, he had two research papers published regarding swine medication for cervical abscesses and the use of sulfa for swine respiratory and enteric infection. The Rock Island Argus of July 1959 published an account of a successful "standing C-section" followed by a colonostomy on a feed-lot heifer in farm-site conditions. He also was an Illinois Department of Agriculture inspector at a local turkey processing operation.

Dr. Van Roekel was an Honor Roll member of AVMA, held memberships in both American Association of Bovine Practitioners, and Swine Practitioners, Iowa State Veterinary Medical Alumni Association and Aledo Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rosalie; a son, Kermit (Ruth) Van Roekel, Johnston, Iowa; a daughter, Dr. Vivian (B.L.) Van Roekel-Lanan, St. Charles, Ill.; three grandchildren, Royce (Sheena) Van Roekel, Seth (Nikki) Van Roekel, of Iowa, and Meredith Lanan, St. Charles; one great-granddaughter, Ihla Kate Van Roekel, Waukee, Iowa; two sisters, Gladys Mitchell, Minnesota, and Marla (Rev. Joe) Mooibroeck, Texas; three brothers, George, Rodney (Eleanor) and Dr. Glenn (Audrey) Van Roekel, of Iowa.
