Abraham (Abe J.) Van Roekel was born on December 24, 1917 at Boyden, Iowa to John A. and Gertrude (Van Stryland) Van Roekel. He lived his youth on a farm southwest of Boyden where he attended rural school. He was united in marriage to Alice Cleveringa of Orange City on May 7, 1941. To this union two daughters were born. They lived and farmed south of Boyden. Alice passed away January 28, 1975. He was united in marriage in August of 1976 to Jeanette Bouwman. They moved into Boyden in July of 1987. Jeanette passed away December of 1987. He was united in marriage to Gert Kiel of Alvord in September 1988 at Doon. They made their home in Boyden until May of 2009 when they moved to Fieldcrest in Sheldon. He entered Sanford Senior Care in January of 2014. Abe passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 reaching the age of 98 years, 10 months and 15 days.
Abe was a lifetime member of First Reformed Church in Boyden. He was chairman of the church mission drive and part of it for many years. He was a loyal supporter of the Senior Saints music group. He enjoyed feeding cattle, spending time at sale barns, buying cattle for area cattle feeders, fall trips to Montana ranches, fishing, playing cards and dominos.
Abe is survived by his wife, Gert of Sheldon; two daughters, Myrna (Marvin) Van't Hul of Hull and Audrey Hoftyzer of Boyden; four grandchildren, Marlys (Merrill) Nettinga of Hull, Marchelle (Mike) Kots of Carroll, Kayla (Kevin) Rosenboom and Craig (Kristin) Hoftyzer both of Boyden; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Joan Van Gorp of Sioux Center; nieces; nephews; five stepdaughters; one step son; numerous step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Abe was preceded in death by wives, Alice and Jeanette; son-in-law, Jerry Hoftyzer, one brother, Albert Van Roekel; four sisters, Nancy Horn, Gert Vander Lee, Mina Harman and Henrietta Ferwerda.
Mrs. Abe J. Van Roekel, 53, of Boyden, died Jan. 28 in a hospital at Sheldon after a long illness.
Services were at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 31 in First Reformed Church at Boyden. The Rev. Sylvester Moths officiated. Burial was in Boyden cemetery with the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center in charge.
Mrs. Van Roekel, the former Alice Cleveringa, was born June 25, 1921 at Sioux Center.
She was married May 7, 1941 at Sioux Center. The couple farmed near Boyden.
Survivors include the widower; two daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Myrna Goldene) Vant Hul of Boyden and Mrs. Jerry (Audrey Beth) Hoftyzer of Allendorf; three grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence of Sioux Center and Tony of Orange City and a sister, Mrs. Dick Van Klompenberg of Alton.

Jeanette Van Roekel, 62, of Boyden, died Wednesday, December 24 [sic!], at the Boyden hospital.
Services were Saturday at First Reformed Church in Boyden, the Rev. Steven Tamminga officiating. Burial was at the Lester cemetery in Lester.
Born Jeanette Boekestein November 28, 1925, at Inwood, she attended school in the Inwood area and married Dick Bouwman June 20, 1946. The couple lived near Alvord, Rock Rapids and Inwood. He died June 10, 1969.
She married Abe Van Roekel August 14, 1976. They lived near Boyden.
She was a member of First Reformed Church in Boyden and the Senior Saints Singing Group.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dennis of Pella and Roger of Fulton, Illinois; a daughter, Carol Meyer of Orange City; two stepdaughters, Myrna Vant Hul and Audrey Hoftyzer, both of Boyden; three brothers, Gilbert of Artesia, California, Art of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Ed of Wyoming, Michigan; a sister, Kathy Boekestein of Rock Valley; 11 grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren.

Gertrude (De Vries) (Kiel) Van Roekel was born January 16, 1932, in Larchwood, IA, daughter of Oscar & Martha (Tilstra) De Vries. She graduated from Inwood High School and was united in marriage to Arie Kiel. They lived in the Alvord, IA area for 37 years. After Arie’s death she married Abe J. Van Roekel in 1988 at Doon Iowa. They lived in Boyden IA.
She worked in Valley Manor at Rock Valley for 15 years. She had been a member of the Doon First Reformed Church where she taught Sunday school, Catechism, Bible School was the Children’s Choir Director, active in the Reformed Church Women’s Ministry and Senior Saints. She loved traveling, reading and playing cards. She learned to love the computer at age 74. She moved into Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon IA in 2009. After having a stroke in 2016 she moved to the nursing home.
She is survived by her children: Ardis Berkery (Kevin), Burbank, CA; Barb Arends (Glen), Lester, IA; Char LaFrenz (Rick), Foley, MN; Laurine Gerritsen (Don), Rock Rapids, IA; Russell Kiel ( Vicki), Alvord, IA, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; Stepchildren, Myrna Van’t Hul ( Marvin), Hull, IA and Audrey Hoftyzer, Boyden, IA. Siblings: Arlene Kooistra, Hills, MN, David De Vries (Linda), Alvord, IA; Oscar De Vries (Lori), Sioux Falls, SD and Joyce Tracy (John), Marionville, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother, Gertrude De Vries, husbands; Arie and Abe, and daughter, Julie Kiel.
