Obituary of Mrs. Dorothy Van Engen, Sheldon

Mrs. Dorothy Van Engen, 51, passed away suddenly at her home near Sheldon early Monday morning, December 5, 1966.

Mrs. Van Engen was born January 26, 1915 to John Vogel and Grace Van Kekerix near Sheldon.

She was united in marriage to Abe Van Engen on December 8, 1936. They farmed in the Sanborn-Sheldon areas.

Survivors are her husband; four sons and one daughter, Adrian of Hull, Dale of Sibley, Gerald of Sheldon, Leslie at home, and Verna Jean (Mrs, Jake Vander Zwaag) of Hull; and five grandchildren.

Also surviving are three brothers and three sisters: Kryne and Peter of Sheldon, Alvin of Bigelow, Minn., Adeline (Mrs. Dewey Tolsma) of Artesia, Calif., Pearl (Mrs. John Jansen) of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., and Wilma Vogel of Sheldon.

Preceding in death are her parents and one brother, John Jr.

Services were conducted Thursday, December 8, 1966at 1:30 p.m. in the First Reformed Church at Sheldon with Rev. Albert Van Dyke officiating. Interment was in the Roseland Cemetery at Sanborn. The Sanborn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Abraham "Abe" Van Engen, 69, of rural Sheldon, died Wednesday, February 10 in a Sioux City hospital.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the First Reformed Church at Sheldon. The Revs. Louis Benes and Kenneth Westrate officiated. Burial was in Roseland Cemetery at Sanborn. Family visitation was from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in the Sanborn Funeral Home.

Mr. Van Engen was born May 26, 1912, near Alton. He lived in the Sanborn and Archer vicinity.

He married Dorothy Vogel Dec. 8, 1936, at Sanborn. They farmed in the Sheldon vicinity. She died in 1966.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church.

Survivors include four sons, Adrian of Hull, Dale of Sibley. Gerald "Joe" and Leslie, both of Sheldon; four brothers, John of Orange City, Gerrit of Sioux Center, George of Sibley and Albert of Sanborn; six sisters, Clazina Vander Veen and Nancy Cuperus, both of Sheldon, Gertrude Baker of Worthington, Minn., Mrs. Norman (Tena) Buysman of Sioux Falls, S.D., Johanna Vos of Sibley and Mrs. Cornie (Mina) Van Kley of Sanborn, and 11 grandchildren.

Adrian Dwayne Van Engen, 61, of Hull died Friday, December 18, at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Services were held on Tuesday at First Reformed Church in Hull. Burial was in Hope Cemetery.

Van Engen was born October 10, 1937, in Sanborn. the son of Abraham "Abe" and Dorothy (Vogel) Van Engen. He was raised in Sheldon and served in the armed forces during the Vietnam War.

He married Betty Jean Van Otterloo on June 21, 1963, in Hull. The couple made their home in Hull. He was employed at Koyker Manufacturing for many years. He later became a partner in C & A Repair, which he then owned and operated.

He was a member of First Reformed Church and American Legion Wegman-Koele Post of Hull. He served as a volunteer fireman in Hull for 30 years and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Arlan; a daughter, Darla; five grandchildren; and three brothers, Dale, Gerald "Joe" and Leslie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Verna Jean Van Der Zwaag.

Obituary of Dale

Dale Van Engen, age 71 of Sibley, IA died Thursday, November 10, 2011 at the Sanford Hospital in Sheldon, IA.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Monday, November 14, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley, with Reverend Terry Simm officiating. Burial will follow in the Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 13th from 2-8 PM with the family present from 6-8 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley.

Dale Marion Van Engen was born January 4, 1940 on a family farm southwest of Sheldon, Iowa, the son of Abraham and Dorothy (Vogel) Van Engen. He was raised on the farm and attended country school. After his education he remained living with his parents, working for various farmers in the area. He also worked at the creamery, sale barn for 30 years, the truck stop, the elevator in Little Rock, IA, Conveyor Company in Sibley and hauled chickens for Bosma.

On April 16, 1960 Dale married Lois Stratmeier at the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley, IA. Three children were born to this union. In 1968 they moved to a farm southwest of Sibley. In 1973 Dale and Lois were divorced.

On July 24, 1983 Dale married Colleen Sullivan. On July 13, 1997 Dale's wife, Colleen died after 13 years of marriage. Through the years Dale enjoyed attending farm sales, raising animals on his farm, and fishing. He hosted several A.B.A.T.E. parties and Muscular Dystrophy parties at his farm. He frequently visited Winnavegas Casino and Argosy Riverboat Casino near Sioux City, IA. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He cherished his grandkids, a great-grandson and his dog, Blackie.

After years of failing health Dale died this past Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Sanford Hospital in Sheldon, IA at the age of 71. He is survived by five children, Vicki (Duane) Vande Garde, Ron (Shari) Van Engen, both of Sibley, IA, Pam (Chad) Wollmuth of Little Rock, IA; Amy Gruis of Harrisburg, SD and Kim (Jamie) Lyons of Sheldon, IA; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; a brother, Les Van Engen of Sheldon, IA; and many other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abraham and Dorothy Van Engen; his wife, Colleen Van Engen; two brothers, Gerald and Adrian Van Engen; and one sister, Verna Jean Vander Zwaag.

Obituary of Gerald Jay

Gerald "Joe" Jay Van Engen, 60, Sheldon, died Saturday, June 12, at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.

Services were Tuesday, June 15, at First Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Gordon Bloemendaal officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, under the direction of Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Gerald Jay Van Engen, son of Abraham & Dorothy (Vogel) Van Engen, was born June 24, 1943 in Sheldon, where he lived his youth and received his education, graduating from Sheldon High School in 1961. He married Josephine Marie Van Kley on Dec. 6, 1963, in Rock Valley. He worked as a finish carpenter for Poppema-Sikma Construction for several years.

He was the director of maintenance at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, where he worked for the past 22 years and was serving as the construction manager for the new hospital.

He was a communicant member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon.

He will be remembered for his love of antiques, his ability to fix anything and for always going the extra mile for his family, friends and co-workers.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 40 years, Jo Van Engen of Sheldon; three daughters, Lanette and Arthur Zewert of rural Sheffield; Melinda and Bob Timmer of Hudsonville, MI; and Brenda and Curtis Hamstra of Colorado Springs, CO; five grandchildren, Maia and Amber Zewert and Culley, Carsyn and Avyrie Hamstra; and two brothers Dale Van Engen of Sibley, and Les Van Engen of Sheldon.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gerald Jay Van Engen Jr.; a brother, Adrian Van Engen, and a sister Verna Jean Van Der Zwaag.

Mrs. Jake Van Der Zwaag, 33, Hull, died Thursday, Aug. 17 at her home after a sudden illness.

Services were last Monday at the First Christian Reformed Church. Burial was in the Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Van Der Zwaag, the former Verna Jean Van Engen, was born May 11, 1945, at Sheldon, Iowa. She was married Aug. 19, 1964 at Sheldon. She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church.

Survivors include the widower; a son, Kenneth; a daughter, Darcy; her father, Abe Van Engen; four brothers, Gerald, Leslie, Adrian and Dale.

Jake married Verna Jean Van Engen on August 19, 1964 in Sheldon, Iowa.

Jake Anthony Van Der Zwaag, 55, of Hull died Friday, January 28, at Sioux Center Community Hospital. Services were held on Tuesday at First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. Burial was in Hope Cemetery.

Van Der Zwaag was born January 18, 1945, at Hull, the son of Clarence and Ida (Jans) Van Der Zwaag. He spent his entire life on the same farm east of Hull. He married Verna Jean Van Engen on August 19, 1964, at Sheldon. She died August 17, 1978, at Hull. He married Sandra Sandy" Kay Foote at Sibley on October 26, 1979. He farmed and operated Van Der Zwaag Trucking with his brother. In earlier years, he also operated a feed grinder.

He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors, reading newspapers and going camping.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kenneth and; two daughters, Darcy and Amy; four grandchildren; a brother, Gerrit; and a sister, Clara.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
