Obituaries of George and Helen

George Van Engen, 72, of Sibley died Monday, April 19, at his home.

Funeral services were Thursday, April 22, at 10:30 a.m. at First Reformed Church of Slbley with the Rev. Gary Van Heukelom officiating. Burial was in the Holman Township Cemetery of Sibley.

Van Engen was born March 27, 1921, at Alton, the son of John and Tina (Van Roekel) Van Engen. He grew up and attended school in the Archer area and had two years of high school at Western Christian in Hull.

He served in the American, European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters during World War II and earned two Bronze Battle Stars.

After his honorable discharge In 1947, he returned to Northwest Iowa.

He married Helen Buysman at the home of her parents near Sibley. Following their marriage they lived in Lennox, South Dakota, and later moved to Sibley.

He was very active in the American Legion and also helping other veterans. He was Service Officer of the Disabled American Veterans with 9,094 hours of volunteer service including 20 years of service to the Vets Hospital in Sioux Falls.

He also served as Ninth District Commander of the American Legion and was instrumental in Sibley in completing the Avenue of Flags on Memorial Day. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sibley.

Survivors include his wife; four children, Theola Van Weltering and her husband Bill of Clear Lake, Jim Van Engen and his wife Pauline of Sibley, Gloria Eddy and her husband Steve of Hlnton, and Tim Van Engen and his wife Noel of Webster City; six sisters, Gertrude Baker of Worthlngton, Minnesota, Nancy Cuperus of Sheldon, Clazina Vander Veen of Sheldon, Johanna Vos of Sibley. Hermina Van Kley of Sanborn and Tina Buysman of Sioux Falls; two brothers, Gerrit of Sioux Center and Albert of Sanborn; and 11 grandchildren.

Helen Van Engen, 82, of Sibley died Wednesday evening (May 25, 2005) at her residence in Sibley.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at First Reformed Church in Sibley with the Rev. Gary Van Heukelom officiating. Burial will follow in Holman Township Cemetery at Sibley.

Helen Harriet (Buysman) Van Engen was born May 1, 1923, at Sanborn, Iowa, the daughter of James and Flora (Elgersma) Buysman. Helen grew up in the Sanborn and Melvin areas, where she received her education.

On Nov. 27, 1947, she was united in marriage to George Van Engen in Sibley, Iowa. The couple made their home in Lennox, S.D., and later they moved to Sibley, where they raised their family.

Helen worked for Osceola Community Hospital as a housekeeper for 35 years.

In 1993, Helen's husband, George, died, ending their marriage of 47 years. She continued to live in their home, where she kept very active.

Helen enjoyed life and people, especially her grandchildren.

She enjoyed spending time at the summer cabin on Spirit Lake, sitting around a camp fire, going to rummage sales, quilting, "bling-bling" jewelry, shopping, fishing, going on bus trips, walking her dogs, Babe and Peppy, and loved her bird, Petey.

Helen was a member of First Reformed Church in Sibley. She had a deep determination and when she was diagnosed with cancer that determination stayed with her until the end.

Helen died this past Wednesday evening, May 25, 2005, at her home in Sibley with her family by her side.

She is survived by her children; Theola and her husband, Bill Van Wettering, of Forest City, Jim and his wife, Pauline Van Engen, of Sibley, Gloria and her husband, Steve Eddy, of Hinton, and Tim and his wife, Noel Van Engen, of Lake Park, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; along with one brother, Norman (Tina) Buysman of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and two sisters: Joyce (Gerrit) Meyer of Worthington, Minn., and Evelyn (Lloyd) Runia of Sibley.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, James and Flora; husband, George; two grandchildren: Lesley Ann Eddy and Tyler Steven Eddy; and brother, Harold Buysman.
