Obituary of Charlsie

Charlsie VanOostrum passed from this life on March 17, 2017 in Corn at the age of 96. Charlsie was born on December 10, 1920 in Tipton, Oklahoma to Eugene Clark and Lena (Parks) Clark. She was raised and attended school in Tipton and was a high school graduate of Tipton, class of 1938. After graduation she married Marvin VanOostrum in Tipton in 1941 and enjoyed many years of marriage before his passing in 1978. Charlsie was an independent woman and even after Marvin’s passing she managed to remain on the farm for many years alone. Her home burned down at which time she moved into town. Her heart was in the country because after a short stay in town she had a trailer moved back out to the home place. At the time of her final move she decided to leave Tipton to move into the Corn Heritage Village where she spent the remaining 17 years of her life. This afforded her the opportunity to be closer to family, which she loved.

Charlie spent much of her time and energy in pursuing her families’ genealogy. She would travel many miles and all of her resources to trace down her family and where they came from. Often times spending days in different cemeteries finding where relatives had been laid to rest. She also loved to crochet, quilt, digging in the dirt and planting all forms of vegetation.

She was the eldest of five children and helped raise her four younger brothers, Kenneth, Grady, Alvin and Keith whom have all preceded her in death along with her baby sister Thelda who died at birth. Charlsie is survived by daughter Marilyn Kern and husband Terry of Cowden and a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Duane and Rae Payne and daughters Jori Hanken and husband Matthew and Kari Beth Payne, Bryan and Rene Hurst and daughters Haley and Emily, Matt and Anji Jett and children Luke, Nicholas and Ellie, Scott Kern and son Noah.
