Obituary of Jeanette

Services for Jeanette Berghorst will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 13, at Christian Reformed Church of Luverne with the Rev. George Koopmans officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Luverne. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at Engebretson Funeral Home in Luverne and will resume one hour prior to the funeral in the church.

Jeanette M. Berghorst, 86, Luverne, formerly of Beaver Creek, died on Monday, April 9, 2001, at Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Center in Luverne.

Jeanette Post was born to Thys and Ruth (Gritters) Post on July 27, 1914, in Sioux County, Iowa, where she was raised and attended school in Hull, Iowa.

She married Joe Berghorst on Nov. 18, 1934, in Sioux Falls, S.D. Following their marriage they farmed near Hull for several years, then farmed near Magnolia before moving to the farm near Beaver Creek in 1946. Mr. Berghorst died on Feb. 20, 1956. After her husband's death she continued farming with her son, Henry, until the farm was sold in 1975. She moved to Beaver Creek where she remained until entering Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Center at Luverne in May 2000.

Mrs. Berghorst was a charter member of Christian Reformed Church in Luverne where she was active in Ladies Aid and Christian School Society. She was also a member of Beaver Creek Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors include one son, Ted Berghorst, Beaver Creek; six daughters and three sons-in-law, Ruth Roemeling, Sharon Flatequal, both of Luverne, Barbara and Larry Flanigan, El Cajon, Calif., Mildred and William Swezey, Kathy and Charlie Ruud, all of Sioux Falls, and Thelma Symanietz, Omaha, Neb.; 21 grandchildren; 29-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Hermina (Min) Koele, Hull, and Ruth DeVries, Sandpoint, Idaho; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Berghorst was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, Henry and Joel, three brothers, George, John and Egbert, and two sisters, Della and Irene.

Engebretson Funeral Home, Luverne, is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary of Barbara

Barbara Berghorst Flanigan, 73, Las Vegas, Nevada, died Thursday, April 2, 2015.

A memorial service was Tuesday, April 7, at Palm Northwest Mortuary in Las Vegas. A graveside service will be Thursday, April 23, at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, California.

Barbara Berghorst was born Aug. 6, 1941, to Joe and Jeanette (Post) Berghorst near Doon, Iowa. She grew up on a farm near Beaver Creek and graduated from Beaver Creek High School in 1959. She earned her certificate in business from Business College in Minneapolis. She then worked at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and for Benjamin Vander Kooi Sr. in Luverne.

On April 25, 1964, Barbara married Larry Flanigan in Reno, Nevada. They lived in several states, as well as Guam, while her husband was in the U.S. Navy. After her children were in school, Barb began working for the Civil Service as a personnel clerk. She was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal three times by the Navy. She retired as a personnel management specialist on April 1, 1998. The couple moved to Las Vegas in July 2003.

She was a member of Mountain View Presbyterian Church in Las Vegas.

Barb is survived by her husband, Larry Flanigan, Las Vegas; two children, Kelli (Ryan) Walsh, Marshalltown, Iowa, and Patrick (Tami) Flanigan, San Diego; eight grandchildren, Emily, Jacob, Amy, Ashley (Clark) Baier, Hayden, Dillon, Liam and Grace; a great-grandson; three sisters, Ruth Roemeling, Luverne, Thelma Symanietz, Omaha, Nebraska, and Kathy (Charlie) Ruud, Sioux Falls; a brother, Ted (Bonnie) Berghorst, Beaver Creek; and a brother-in-law, Bill Swezey, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Henry and Joe Berghorst; and two sisters, Mill Swezey and Sharon Flatequal.

Obituary for Sharon Faye Flatequal

SHARON FAYE FLATEQUAL was born on September 15, 1946 to Joe and Jeanette (Post) Berghorst in Luverne, Minnesota. She grew up on a farm near Beaver Creek, Minnesota, the sixth of nine children. She was baptized and later made her profession of faith at the Christian Reformed Church in Luverne. She attended school in Beaver Creek and graduated from Beaver Creek High School in 1964.

Following her education, she moved to Marshall, Minnesota where she met Roger Flatequal. The couple was united in marriage on May 13, 1966 at the Christian Reformed Church in Luverne. Their union was blessed with three children, Todd, Stephanie, and Jill. The couple made their home in Minneapolis until 1971 when they moved to Luverne. Sharon was a 30 year employee for Sanford Luverne Medical Center. She moved to Beaver Creek in 2001. On October 7, 2003, Sharon received the gift of renewed life as a recipient of a single lung transplant. Throughout her life, Sharon was the one who gave freely of herself to her family, friends, church and community. To be on the receiving end of such generosity was most humbling. She was extremely grateful for the selfless act of the organ donor and their loved ones. She entered Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 where she died on Friday, September 30, 2011 at the age of 65 years and 15 days.

Sharon was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne. She was active in the life of the congregation through her service as a deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, and participant in several bible studies. She enjoyed listening to Christian music and attending Christian music concerts. Family was most important to Sharon and she devoted her life to them, as well as to her faith, friends, and her beloved Golden Retriever, Sadie. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sibling, and friend and dearly missed by all.

She is lovingly remembered by her son, Todd Flatequal and his children, Clarissa and Paxton, all of Harrisburg, South Dakota, her daughter, Stephanie Pierce and her husband Travis, and their children, Paige, Abigail, and Samantha, all of Luverne, and her daughter, Jill Broughton of Phoenix, Arizona; five siblings, Ruth Roemeling of Luverne, Barbara and her husband Larry Flanigan of Las Vegas, Nevada, Thelma Symanietz of Omaha, Nebraska, Kathy and her husband Charlie Ruud of Sioux Falls, and Ted Berghorst of Beaver Creek; brother-in-law, William Swezey of Sioux Falls; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant twin grandsons, Aaron and Adam; two brothers, Joey and Henry Berghorst; and a sister, Mildred Swezey. Blessed be her memory!
