Obituary of Grace and Roy

Grace Van Maanen, age 79, of Rock Valley, died suddenly Friday, August 14, 1998, at McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral service was Monday, August 17, at the First Christian Reformed Church at Rock Valley. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley. Rev. C. Eric Fennema officiated.

Visitation was Sunday at the First Christian Reformed Church Fellowship Hall at Rock Valley. Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley was in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Hope Haven of Rock Valley.

Grace was born September 24, 1918 at Hull, IA, daughter of Gerrit and Jennie (Boeve) Scholten. She attended school at Hull.

Grace married Roy Van Maanen on August 26, 1937 at Hull. Together they farmed near Doon and Inwood, IA before retiring to Rock Valley in 1981.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Roy of Rock Valley; two sons and their wives, Edwin and Audrey Van Maanen of Kersey, CO, Roger and Lori Van Maanen of Inwood; five daughters and their husbands, Marcia and Gerry Van Ginkel of Sioux Falls, Garlene and John H. Van Veldhuizen of Doon, Joy Van Maanen of Rock Valley, Glenda and Robert Horstman of Inwood, Julie and Frank Boyer of Hudson, SD; twenty-seven grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren.

Grade was preceded in death by her parents, Gerrit and Jennie Scholten; two brothers, Albert and Henry Scholten; one sister, Gertrude Vander Sloot.

Roy Van Maanen, 81, of Rock Valley died Monday, August 9, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.

Services were at 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Reformed Church In Rock Valley with the Rev. Jelmer Groenewold officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery.

Van Maanen was born April 17, 1918, in Hull, the son of Ed and Maggie (Mulder) Van Maanen.

He married Grace Scholten on August 26, 1937, In Hull. The couple farmed near Doon and later near Inwood. They retired and moved to Rock Valley in 1981.

She died August 14, 1998.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Edwin and Audrey of Kersey, Colorado, and Roger and Lori of Inwood; five daughters, Marcia and her husband Gerry Van Glnkel of Sioux Falls, Garlene and her husband John H. Van Veldhuizen of Doon. Joy Van Maanen of Rock valley, Glenda and her husband Robert Horstman of Inwood and Julie and her husband Frank Boyer of Hudson, South Dakota; four brothers and their wives, Bert and Bernice of Hull, Tom and Gerdena of Hull, Ed and Christine of Doon and Harold and Lois of Hull; four sisters, Ella Meendering of George, Mina and her husband Ted Hoekstra of Hull, Margaret Hoekstra of Hull and Jane and her husband Henry Hoksbergen of Boyden: 27 grandchildren; and 32 greatgrandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to Hope Haven in Rock Valley.

Rock Valley, Iowa: Joy Van Maanen, 66, of Rock Valley, Iowa died Sunday, November 8, 2015 at Whispering Heights at Rock Valley. Funeral service will be Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 1:30 PM at First Christian Reformed Church at Rock Valley. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 11, 2015 from 5-7 PM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to Hope Haven or Whispering Heights. Joy Joan Van Maanen, daughter of Roy and Grace (Scholten) Van Maanen, was born December 29, 1948 at Le Mars, Iowa. Joy grew up and spent most of her adult life on the family farm near Inwood with her loving parents until their deaths when Joy moved into Whispering Heights in Rock Valley. Growing up, Joy enjoyed riding the pony cart. She enjoyed watching television, playing with Barbies and dolls, stuffed animals, and paging through books and catalogs. Joy loved her nieces and nephews and she really liked the Van Maanen Family Christmases where she got to hand out the mittens. While living at Whispering Heights, Joy enjoyed the staff and being able to tease them. She also liked participating in the nursing home sing-a-longs.

Joy is survived by her sisters, Marcia (Gerry) Van Ginkel of Sioux Falls, SD, Garlene (John H.) Van Veldhuizen of Doon, Iowa, Glenda (Robert) Horstman of Inwood, Iowa, and Julie (Frank) Boyer of Hudson, SD; brother, Roger (Lori) Van Maanen of Inwood; sister-in-law, Audrey Van Maanen of Kersey, CO; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Grace; and brother, Ed Van Maanen.
