Henry Van Wyhe Laid To Rest in Michigan

Henry Van Wyhe, 57, principal of the high school in Flat Rock, Michigan, was stricken with a fatal heart attack at the school about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 9. He had gone to his home for lunch and was in the hall apparently on his way to duties in the cafeteria when stricken.

Funeral services were held at Flat Rock on Saturday with interment being made in Lake Forest Cemetery at Grand Haven, Michigan, on Monday.

Mr. Van Wyhe had a heart condition for some years stemming from rheumatic fever in his youth. A return of rheumatic fever kept him away from his duties for several months some years ago.

He was born at Hull, Iowa, October 2, 1903, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Van Wyhe. He went to Michigan in 1922 where he was a student at Calvin College for two years before returning to Hull where he was principal and teacher of the 5th and 8th grade classes from 1924 to 1926. He then continued his education and joined the Flat Rock school system as a teacher of History in 1933. Two years later he was named principal, a position which, he continued to hold.

He married Idanete Sluiter at Grand Haven April 3, 1936 and she survives. A daughter, Janice, is a senior at Michigan State University. A son, Ronnie, died in 1948. Eight brothers and five sisters also survive. The brothers are William, Edward and John of Hull, Iowa, Jacob of Lansing, Ben of Clinton, Wis., Lee of Kansas City, Mo., Arthur of Sioux Center and Richard of Unity, Wis. The sisters are Mrs. Jacob Sneller, Mrs. Gerrit Van Otterloo and Mrs. Nick Marel of Sheldon, Iowa, Mrs. Richard Kruizenga of Darien, Wis., and Mrs. Burt Franken of Boyden.
