Jake D. Sneller passed away on June 14, 1968 in a Sioux City, Iowa hospital.
Jacob "Jake" was born May 8, 1900 in Sioux Center, Iowa. He was the son of Dries and Hattie (Van Grevenhof ) Sneller.
Jake married Janet Van Wyhe on January 9, 1934 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Survivors include the widow and four sons - Vernon of Sioux City Iowa, Marvin of Fargo North Dakota, and Lowell and Lynn, both of Sheldon Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Willie Roemmich, of Sutherland Iowa; a brother, Andrew, of Matlock Iowa and six grandchildren.

During his first year at Central College, he met the love of his life, Pauline Atkins, at a Tulip Festival dance. Both dressed in traditional Dutch attire and danced in wooden shoes. They married four years later August 10, 1956, in Pella, IA. Pauline and Vern were together from then on and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on August 10, 2023. Pauline and Vern raised 5 children: LeeAnn, Tim, Ron, Lisa and Michael. They were both active in their church and Vern served as an Usher. They also enjoyed square dancing and were committee members for their group named Skirts and Flirts. For a short time, they also ran a small business aptly named VP Enterprise.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife and constant companion, Pauline (Atkins), daughter Lee Ann, sons Tim (Debbie), Ron (Rhonda), and Michael (Lori) of Sioux City, IA and daughter Lisa (Mike) Engeldinger, of Bellevue, WA. 12 Grandchildren, Brysen Sneller, Sarah (Dagan) Davenport, Tim (Heather) Sneller, Cole (Marsha) Sneller, Nate (Missy) Sneller, Ronnie Sneller, Raven Sneller Jessica Engeldinger, Ben Engeldinger, Brandon (Jazmine) Sneller, Karalynn Sponder, Kendra Ahrnkiel and 5 Great-Grandchildren. Also Surviving are brother Lynn (Denise) Sneller, of Orange City, IA, sister-in-law Peggy Sneller, of Grayslake IL., sister-in-law Rhoda Sneller, of West Des Moines, IA. and brother-in-law Roger Atkins of San Francisco, CA.
Predeceasing Vern were his parents, sister Arlene and brother-in-law Willie Roemmich, brothers Marvin Sneller, Lowell Sneller and Loren Sneller (infant).
A family graveside service will be held Friday, September 22, 2023, at Memorial Park Cemetery Sioux City. IA. An informal Celebration for Vernon will be held at Brown's Lake, Bigelow Park Shelter at 5pm where all are welcome to celebrate his life and memories.
Pauline Ruth Sneller, 89 of Sioux City, Iowa, daughter of Earl and Ethel (Grotenhuis) Atkins, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2023 peacefully in her sleep. A Memorial Service will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2023 at the Grace United Methodist Church with Reverend John Christianson officiating. A Reception will be held in the fellowship hall following services. Burial will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City.
Pauline was born in Kansas City, Missouri on Jan 21, 1934. At the age of 9, she and her family moved to Pella, Iowa where she attended Pella High. Pauline worked as the Secretary for the Pella City Clerk and was selected to ride on the City Office float for the annual Tulip Festival.
During a Tulip Festival dance, she met the love of her life, Vernon Sneller. Both dressed in traditional Dutch attire and danced in wooden shoes. They married four years later August 10, 1957, in Pella. Pauline and Vern were together from then on and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on August 10, 2023. After marriage, they lived in Pella, Woodward, Le Mars and Sioux City Iowa. Pauline and Vern raised 5 children: LeeAnn, Tim, Ron, Lisa and Michael. They were both active in their church. Pauline enjoyed participating in the choir, Hand Bell Choir and Women's Bible Study at Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. Pauline and Vern also enjoyed square dancing and were committee members for their group named Skirts and Flirts. For a short time, they also ran a small business aptly named VP Enterprise.
A devoted mother and loving spouse, Pauline enjoyed beading, playing the piano and music of any form. One of Pauline's proudest achievements was heading up the Grace United Methodist Church Outreach Commission Refugee Program helping relocate five families from Vietnam and Cambodia. In 1989, Pauline was awarded the Individual Governor's Volunteer Award for providing outstanding volunteer service presented by Governor Terry Branstad at the Governor's Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony.

Arlene Marie Roemmich, the daughter of Jake and Janet (Van Wyne) Sneller, was born August 20, 1937 in rural O’Brien County near Sheldon, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent on a farm near Carmel, Iowa, where she received her early education at Platte #6 Country School through 6th grade. Her family then moved to farm near Sheldon, where she continued her education, graduating from Sheldon High School in 1954. Arlene attended Northwestern Jr. College and received her 2-year degree in Elementary Education in 1956. Later that year, Arlene began her teaching career in Sutherland, teaching the fourth-grade class for 7 years, where she met her future husband, Willie.
Arlene married Willie Oscar Roemmich on May 31, 1957 at the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon, IA. After continuing to teach for a few years, she temporarily retired to stay home and raise her two children in Sutherland.
After her husband’s premature death in 1981, Arlene returned to school at Buena Vista College on the Spencer, IA campus where she went to night school and received her BA Degree in Elementary Education at the age of 50 years old. She then taught 3rd grade at Everly schools for 12 years until her retirement in 2000.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland. Arlene was also active in the community of Sutherland, helping with blood drives through Life Serve, visiting people at the Sutherland Care Center, was involved with the Prairie Heritage Center, made Hospice visits and enjoyed sewing and reading. She also enjoyed traveling and had made trips to Prince Edward Island, New Zealand, Europe, Nigeria, Canada and many states of the USA.
Arlene passed away at the Pearl Valley Rehab and Nursing Home in Sutherland, Iowa on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at the age of 81.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willie in 1981 and a son, Kevin in 1996.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Julie and her husband, Kevin of Des Moines, IA; four brothers: Vern (Pauline) Sneller of Sioux City, IA, Marv (Peggy) Sneller of Grayslake, IL, twins: Lynn Sneller ( Denise) of Orange City, IA and Lowell (Rhoda) Sneller of West Des Moines, IA; good friend, Paul Wittrock; other relatives and many friends.

Willie Oscar Roemmich, the son of Peter and Lydia (Albright) Roemmich, was born Jan. 4, 1933 at Tappen, N.D. He graduated from Steele High School in 1951 and from Westmar College in 1956. He received his Masters and continued his education at U.S.D. at Vermillion.
He was united in marriage to Arlene Sneller at Sheldon, la. on May 31, 1957. He served in the United States Army for Reserve Training from July 28, 1957 until Jan. 28, 1958. He then started teaching at Sutherland, la. and had been in the school system there since that time, currently as Elementary Principal. He always enjoyed teaching and coaching, loving to work with kids. He kept busy the rest of time too, with various jobs.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Sutherland and the Methodist Men, and was the Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was a member of the Sutherland Ruritan Club and the Iowa Association of Elementary and Middle Schools Principals. He passed away suddenly while working at Sheldon, la. on July 10, 1981 at the age of 48.
Preceding him in death was his father. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Arlene, one daughter, Julia, and one son, Kevin, both at home, his mother, Mrs. John (Lydia) Schumaker of Steele. N.D.. two brothers. Sam of Larimore, N.D. and Ray of New Salem, N.D., two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Esther) Botnen of Bismark, N.D. and Mrs. Wm. R. (Violet) Fischer of Steele, N.D., other relatives and many friends.

After college, Lynn entered Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida. In January of 1971, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and entered flight training, earning his wings in July of 1971. His Naval career brought him to many duty stations in Chicago, Illinois; Albany, Georgia; Key West, Florida; and Sigonella, Sicily, Italy. After seven years of active duty, he joined the Naval Reserve in Sioux City, Iowa and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. During his time in the Reserves, he was the commanding officer of six different Reserve units. After serving for twenty years in the Navy, he retired as a Commander. He often said that his years in the Navy had a lasting impact on his life.
In 1979, Lynn began his career as a paint chemist at Diamond Vogel Paint, formulating industrial and trade sales coatings. He retired as a senior chemist at the company after thirty-three years of employment.
On November 24, 1972, Lynn was united in marriage to Denise Ten Clay at the Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center. During the first five years of their marriage, Denise was able to accompany Lynn to his various Navy duty stations. After completing his assignment in Sigonella, Sicily, in 1977, Lynn and Denise returned to Northwest Iowa and have since made their home in Orange City, where they raised their two sons, Matthew and Jason.
For many years, Lynn was an active member of American Reformed Church in Orange City, where he served as a deacon, an elder, and as a Sunday School and Catechism teacher. He also served as an elder delegate to the East Sioux Classis of the Reformed Church in America. For the past few years, Lynn and Denise have been blessed to be members of the First Reformed Church in Orange City.
Lynn and Denise liked traveling together and were able to visit all fifty states in the US. During their retirement years, they especially enjoyed taking several cruises; their favorite memories were the river cruises that they took to many countries in Europe. They also liked being snowbirds, wintering in Mesa, Arizona for eight years. Lynn was an enthusiastic golfer for many years, and he also enjoyed playing tennis and pickle ball. He was active with the Dutch Heritage Boosters and was a member of Pressman Kosters American Legion Post in Orange City. Both Lynn and Denise were avid Northwestern College sports fans and attended as many local athletic events as possible.
Lynn is survived by his loving wife of more than 51 years, Denise, of Orange City; two sons and their wives, Matthew and Allison (Pirri) Sneller, of Edina, Minnesota; and Jason and Stephanie (Jackson) Sneller, of Oswego, Illinois; five beloved grandchildren, Jacob Sneller, Lilly Sneller, Cora Sneller, Aidan Sneller, and Abby Sneller; three sisters-in-law, Peggy Sneller, of Grayslake, Illinois; Rhoda Sneller, of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Marcia (Ten Clay), and her husband, Robert Vos, of Auburn, Washington; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Roger and Sherry (Vander Meer) Ten Clay, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings; Vernon Sneller, and his wife, Pauline; Arlene, and her husband, Willie Roemmich; Marvin Sneller; Loren Sneller (as an infant); and Lynn's twin brother, Lowell Sneller.

He worked briefly in campus ministry, then earned an M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. For many years he served as a systems analyst for the State of Iowa. His hobbies followed a studious bent: he explored learning how the mind worked and developed his own thinking system. He and his wife also launched a pro bono website, AbrahamLincolnOnline.org, which earned them the Order of Lincoln in 2009.
In retirement he enjoyed meeting visitors to local historic sites as a tour guide and site interpreter. He is survived by his wife of 46 years; three brothers; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Marv was very well educated, first receiving a BS in Agriculture from South Dakota State University, followed a few years later with an additional year, after which he obtained a certificate in education. From the University of Northern Iowa, he received a MA in Elementary Education Degree. He then received a Specialist Degree in Education Administration from St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minnesota. Later Marv received his Lutheran Teacher Colloquy from Concordia Nebraska.
As a young college graduate, Marv worked in the agriculture industry in several states. He taught in North Dakota, Peru, South America and Guam. He also worked as an elementary teacher and/or principal in public and Lutheran schools in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Michigan. Finishing his adventurous career path, Marv worked 28 years for AAL/Thrivent as a financial services representative in the Chicago area. 8 years ago, he retired to Saddlebrook Farms, a 55+ community in Grayslake, IL.
Marv is survived by his loving and devoted wife and best friend, Peggy (Myers), to whom he had been married for almost 54 years, cherished children Brent, Bartlett, IL, and Beth (Mark) Earnest, Waukesha, WI, treasured grand-children Madelyn Sneller, Ashley Sneller, Tyler Earnest and Benjamin Earnest. Also surviving are brothers Vernon (Pauline) Sneller, Sioux City, IA and Lynn (Denise) Sneller, Orange City, IA, sister-in-law Rhoda Sneller, West Des Moines, IA and brother-in-law Larry Myers, New Berlin, WI. There are numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Predeceasing Marv were his parents, sister Arlene Roemmich, brothers Lowell Sneller and Loren Sneller (infant) and grandson Zachary Earnest (infant).
The memorial service will be May 18 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hawthorn Woods, IL. Visitation will be 9:30-11:00 in the sanctuary, followed by the worship service at 11:00. Immediately following is the inurnment in the columbarium in the church's cemetery.
