John Marvin Van Sloten was born on December 11, 1934 in rural Hull, Iowa to Gerrit and Gertrude (Pollema) Van Sloten, the oldest of their four children. John attended Hull public school and graduated in 1952. He then attended Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa and later received his BS degree in accounting from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota. He worked for the IRS in several South Dakota locations for twenty-five years.
On June 30th, 1960, he married Coreen Bergsma. This union was blessed with four children: Sheryl, Doug, Susan and Dave. John was a life-long member of the Reformed Church of America. He had a great love for the Lord. Most recently he has been a member of Faith Reformed Church. He attended the Hull First Reformed Church as he was growing up and throughout the years he had been active in Mitchell Reformed Church and Sioux Falls Community Reformed Church. John was passionate about his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
When he retired John, Coreen and Susan moved to Rock Valley, Iowa, which was home for 30 years. In Rock Valley he was active in the community as a member and past president of Kiwanis and always had a special place in his heart for Hope Haven. In the church John was a past elder and attended Bible studies faithfully. John will be remembered for his gentle and caring personality. He loved being a father, grandfather and great grandfather. His kindness and fun-loving ways have always been appreciated by his family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Coreen; his children, Sheryl (Jerry) Larsen, Canova, South Dakota, Douglas (Kendra) Van Sloten, Decorah Iowa, Susan Van Sloten, Rock Valley and Dave (Carolyn) Van Sloten, Sturtevant, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Sharese Van Sloten, Bethany (Dustin) Noble, Brett (Samantha) Van Sloten, Hannah Van Sloten, Kevin (Hillary) Larsen, Jeff (Melissa) Larsen and Steven (Kelsey) Larsen; great grandchildren, Brenton, Josina and Baby Noble arriving in July, Oliver Van Sloten and Kaylee Larsen; brother, Norm (Bettie) Van Sloten; sister, Winifred Van Veldhuizen; sister-in-law, Barb Van Sloten; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Marge Bergsma; many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends who were all very important to John. Winifred Eileen was born on June 11, 1941, the daughter of Gerrit and Gertrude (Pollema) Van Sloten. She was raised on a farm north of Hull, Iowa. Her grade school education was at Garfield #8 Country School and she graduated from Hull Public School in 1959.
On December 1, 1959, she was united in marriage to Edwin Loren Van Veldhuizen. They made their home south of Doon, Iowa, where she raised her family and helped Ed farm until he was killed in a tractor/train accident on May 20, 1989. She worked at the Hegg Memorial Hospital and then worked for the Senior Citizen Center and Meals on Wheels until she retired.
Winifred was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley, Iowa, where she attended Ladies Aid. She mentored at Friendship Bible Study. Winifred was not into technology and her radio was usually on listening to her favorite stations. She loved chatting on the phone with not only with her family but with many others. One of her most enduring passions was a heart and mission for sending greeting cards with hand written notes for every occasion. She was a countless prayer warrior for her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her four children, Lorna (Brad) Kraayenbrink of Sheldon, Iowa, Sandi Wallenburg of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mary (Bruce) Wiersma of Orange City, Iowa, and Larry (Paige) Van Veldhuizen of Doon, Iowa; she was blessed with 10 grandchildren, Joshua (Jessica) Kraayenbrink, Matthew Kraayenbrink, Melissa (Greg) Van Den Berg, Dustin (Roxy) Wallenburg, Krista (Jared Cramer) Wallenburg, Angela (Dan) Aesoph, Travis Wiersma, Morgan Erickson, Brooke (Colby) Klaassen, and Eric Van Veldhuizen; 14 great grandchildren, Kyla, Nolan, Ben, Sawyer, Addie, Norah, Cameron, Quinn, Ava, Levi, Brantlee, Brogan, Benson, and Hadley; brother, Norm (Bettie) Van Sloten of Boyden, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Coreen Van Sloten of Rock Valley, Iowa, and Barb Van Sloten of Spirit Lake, Iowa; in-laws, Joan Van Maanen, Elaine Bolkema, and Ron (Gert) Van Veldhuizen, all from Rock Valley, Iowa and Claretta (John) Lobbes of Orange City, Iowa; dear friends, Janice Attema, Garlene Van Veldhuizen, Wilmina and Andy Oostra; special cousin, Wynn Feenstra; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends. All are left to treasure their memories of Winifred.
In addition to her husband, Edwin, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John Van Sloten and Gary Van Sloten; parents-in-law; brothers-in-law, Gerrit Van Maanen and Leroy Bolkema; and dear friends, John Van Veldhuizen and John Attema.
Edwin Loren Van Veldhuizen, 51, of rural Hull died Saturday, May 20 of injuries suffered in a tractor-train accident south of Doon. Services were held in the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley Tuesday with the Rev. C. Eric Fennema officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley with the Porter Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Van Veldhuizen was born Jan. 29, 1938, in Rock Valley. He married Winifred Eileen Van Sloten Dec. 1, 1959, at Hull. The couple farmed in the rural Hull area. Since 1970 he was a bus driver for the Rock Valley Community School. Mr. Van Veldhuizen was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church and the Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry at home and his fiance, Paige Siebrands of Doon; three daughters, Mrs. Brad (Lorna) Kraayenbrink of Sheldon, Mrs. Dave (Sandi) Wallenburg of Inwood and Mrs. Bruce (Mary) Wiersma of Orange City; a brother, Ronald of Rock Valley; three sisters, Mrs. Gerrit A. (Joann) Van Maanen and Mrs. Leroy (Elaine) Bolkema, both of Rock Valley and Mrs. John (Claretta) Lobbes of Orange City; and four grandchildren, Joshua Kraayenbrink, Melissa and Dustin Wallenburg and Angela Wiersma.

Norman (Norm) Glenn Van Sloten, the son of Gerrit and Gertrude (Pollema) was born on
April 24, 1943, on the family farm by Doon.
Norm received his education from the country school outside of Doon, later attending
high school at Boyden-Hull School, graduating in 1961.
Right after graduation, he joined the National Guard being called to help when disasters
occurred.
During that time, Norm would work as a hired man for nearby farmers where he gained the
experience and knowledge in farming.
In 1964, Norm was united in marriage to Bettie Reimers. Norm and Bettie lived by Middleburg for a short time then moving to an acreage outside of Newkirk where he had a dairy operation and raised many other animals including horses. Norm and Bettie were members of the Newkirk Saddle Club where they rode in many local parades. They resided on the farm until they made the move to Boyden. Norm worked at various jobs that included working at the Sale Barn in Sheldon then working as a maintenance supervisor for K-Products twenty plus years until the time he retired. Norm served on the Hospers Farmers Coop Board of Directors and was a 4-H leader for the Floyd Falcons.
Norms hobbies included collecting big and small Farmall tractors - his saying was nothing but the best with the red. Norm was known for going to many garage and farm sales. He was a collector of everything and anything. He also enjoyed his Newkirk neighbors. Norm was most noted for starting up a conversation with anyone. His motto was, no one is a stranger. Norm was a helpful generous guy who would be there for his neighbors in a blink of an eye. And expected nothing in return. He was a proud dad and grandpa who never missed a chance to brag about his children and grandchildren. He remained a true example of an old time farmer picking corn with old red and Bettie driving by his side ready to pull the loaded wagons. Nor was active in the Boyden Presbyterian Church and a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church. Norm was welcomed to his eternal home on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the age of 80 years old.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Bettie; son, Scott (Teresa) Van Sloten of Carnes; daughter, Mendee Thornbury of Emmetsburg; grandchildren, Megan and Ashley Van Sloten, and Tyler (Paige) Thornbury; great-grandson, Hype Thornbury; sisters-in-law, Coreen, and Barb Van Sloten. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred (Arlys) Reimers, Carol Pomerenke, Judy (Jim) Smits, and Sue Reimers.
Norm was preceded in death by his son, Randy, his parents, son-in-law, Steve Thornbury, and siblings, John Van Sloten, Winifred (Eddie) Van Veldhuizen, Gary Van Sloten, and brother-in-law, Bill Reimers.

Gary Van Sloten, age 64, of Doon, passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at
Ava's House by Sanford in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Gary Lee was born on July 15, 1954, in Sioux Center, the son of Gerrit John and Gertrude
(Pollema) Van Sloten.
He was raised on a farm north of Hull, where he helped with milking cows from an early
age.
In 1972, he graduated from Boyden-Hull Community School and then attended Northwest
Iowa Community College where he obtained a power lineman degree.
On August 13, 1975, he was united in marriage to Barbara Kay Schneider at the Newkirk Reformed Church. Gary and Barbara made their home on his family's farm, where he continued milking for more than thirty years and was currently raising heifers and hogs along with crop farming. Gary was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he had served as a deacon. He was currently a member of the Hull Cooperative Association Board.
Survivors include his wife of more than 43 years; three children and their spouses, Stacia and Casey Timmer, of Spencer; Ryan and Jessica (Lorenz) Van Sloten, of Ankeny; and Cody and Tirzah (Peterson) Van Sloten, of Burtrum, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, John and Coreen Van Sloten, of Rock Valley, and Norm and Bettie Van Sloten, of Boyden; a sister, Winnifred Van Veldhuizen, of Rock Valley; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Ron and Judy Schneider, of George, and John and Anita Schneider, of Marcus; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Barb's parents, Gerrit and Hermina Schneider; and a brother-in-law, Edwin Van Veldhuizen.
