Obituaries of Ralph, Oscar and Janet

Funeral services were held at Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon Tuesday November 18, for Ralph Allison Bartman 64, who died Friday, November 14, at Bellflower, Calif., after a long Illness. Services were conducted by the Rev. William B. Miller and burial was made in East Lawn Cemetery at Sheldon (Sic!).

Mr. Bartman was born at Boyden April 20, 1908. He married Janet Vander Weerd August 12, 1936, In Rock Valley. He was a farmer, hog buyer and gardener most of his life.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter Mrs. Thomas (Clarene) Stansbury of Bellflower; one son, Henry, of Bellflower a foster son, Cpl. Emmett Crosby of Santa Ana, Calif.; three brothers, Peter and Herbert of Grand Rapids and Ted of Rock Valley; three sisters, Mrs. Ernest Block of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Gerrit Van Maanen of Doon, Mrs. Arthur Kooima of Rock Valley; four grandchildren.

Oscar Vande Vegte, 69, of Rock Valley died June 3 at Hegg Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Services were June 6 at the First Reformed Church with the Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery under the direction of the Porter Funeral Home.

Mr. Vande Vegte was born April 25, 1909, in Rock Valley.

He married Nellie Van Zee August 26, 1936, in Rock Valley. She died February 24, 1972.

He married Janet Vande Weerd Bartman June 4, 1973. in Bellflower, California. He was a farmer and livestock dealer.

Survivors include the widow; a son, Darrell of Doon; a daughter, Mrs. William (Arlyce) Daugherty of Sioux Falls: a step-son, Henry Bartman of Mission Viejo, California; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Tom (Ciarene) Stansburg of Long Beach, California; two brothers, Henry of Sioux Center and Richard of Mounds, Minnesota; two sisters, Mrs. Roy (Catherine) Bomgaars of Rock Valley and Mrs. Ed (Frances) Van't Hul of Hull; three grandchildren, and five stepgrandchildren.

Janet Ranschau,88, died Thursday, October 23, 2003, at Canton-Inwood Hospital. Funeral Service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 28 at First Reformed Church, Rock Valley with Rev. Mike Van Hamersveld officiating. Burial is at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley.

Jennie "Janet" Vande Weerd was born May 7, 1915, at Rock Valley, daughter of Henry and Alice (Bonthuis) Vande Weerd. After graduating from the Rock Valley Public High School and obtaining her teaching certificate, she taught in a country school between Rock Valley and Doon.

Janet married Ralph Bartman August 12, 1936, at Rock Valley. They lived east of Rock Valley, Michigan, and Sheldon, IA, before moving to California in 1960. Ralph died November 10, 1972. She married Oscar Vande Vegte June 4, 1973. They lived in Rock Valley. Oscar died June 3, 1978. Janet married Henry Ranschau on October 19, 1979. He died August 3, 1996.

Janet lived at Trail Ridge Retirement Community at Sioux Falls, SD, 4 years before moving to Fellowship Village at Inwood, IA, 2 months ago.

Surviving relatives include her son and his wife, Henry and Dorothy Bartman of Canton, SD; daughter and her husband, Clarene and Tom Stansbury of Long Beach, CA; foster-son Emmet Crosby of South Sioux City, NE; 2 brothers and their wives, Chester and Frances Vande Weerd of Rock Valley; Franklin and Myrna Vande Weerd of Coeur DAlone, ID; brother-in-law, Michael Loffredo of Cardiff-By-the-Sea, CA; step-children; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.

Janet was preceded in death by her husbands; brothers, Aldert and Clarence Vande Weerd; sisters, Mabel Schemper and Lorraine Loffredo.

Memorials may be directed to the First Reformed Church Fellowship Hall.
