Sioux Center News; July 27, 1960

Funeral services for Mrs. Ed Berghorst, 46, who died July 12, 1960 were held 1 p.m. Friday at the home and at 1:30 p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church, Hull. Burial was in Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Survivors include the widower; four daughters, Mrs. Jack Kleinwolterink, Mrs. Loren Vander Well and Audrey and Arlene; five grandchildren; her father, Dries; and a brother, Siebron.


Sioux Center News; February 25, 1971

Funeral services were held Feb. 8 at the First Christian Reformed church, Hull, for Ed Berghorst who died at his home Feb. 5 following a heart attack.

Interment was in Hope Cemetery, Hull

He was married to Dena Eppinga Jan. 18, 1934. She died in 1960, and he was married to Hattie Leusink Jan. 10, 1961.

Surviving are the widow; four daughters, Mrs. Jack (Alyna) Kleinwolterink, Anna, Mrs. Leroy (Audrey) Jongetjes and Arlene; his father, Henry, of Bellflower, Calif.; four brothers, Bert, Hills, Minn., Frank, Grand Rapids, Mich., John, Sioux Falls, and Henry of Brandon; two sisters, Mrs. J. D. Stone, Bellflower, Calif., and Mrs. Walter Witchner, Peoria, Ill.; and ten grandchildren.

Hattie Berghorst, 94, of Hull died Thursday, December 20, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital. Funeral service was Monday at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. Interment was at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Mrs. Berghorst was born January 31, 1913, at Hull, the daughter of Henry and Kate (Vis) Leusink. She was raised at Hull. On January 10, 1961, she married Ed Berghorst in Hull, He died February 5, 1961, in Hull, In October of 2000, she became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. She lived most of her life in the Hull and Sioux Center areas.

Survivors include three step-daughters, Anna, Audrey and Arlene; son-in-law, Jack; 12 step-grandchildren; 30 step-great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-greatgrandchildren; a sister, Jeanette, and a sister-in-law, Genevieve. She was also preceded in death by two step-daughters, Alyna and Anita; a son-in-law, Loren Vander Well; two grandchildren; and nine brothers and sisters, Henrietta, Pete, Grace, Gerrit, William, Gertie, Catherine, Gerrit, and Johnnie in infancy.

MARVIN J. "JACK" KLEINWOLTERINK

Marvin J. "Jack" Kleinwolterink was the youngest of 7 children of John and Jennie (Reekers) Kleinwolterink. Jack attended Sheldon Christian Grade School and Western Christian High School. He worked as a carpenter with his brother, Bob.

He was united in marriage to Alyna Ann Berghorst on March 21, 1952, in Hull, IA. The couple made their home on a farm just west of Sheldon, where he farmed and milked cows. In 1972, he sold the cows and began working and driving feed truck for Sheldon Farmers Elevator. He fed cattle at the feedlot and also worked in the Matlock Elevator.

On November 29, 1988, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alyna, from cancer. Then on November 4, 1995, he married Nell Nieuwendorp in Sheldon, IA. Jack retired in 1996, and they enjoyed wintering in Texas; they had many good times and good friends. Jack passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, IA reaching the age of 85 years, 9 months and 25 days. Jack was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon.

Retirement did not slow him down, he remained a hard worker. He was a skilled woodworker and made many wonderful furniture and craft items for his children and grandchildren to treasure. He loved watching his grandchildren in their many different activities. Jack enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and treasured family time. Jack had an "addiction" to Vintage Farm Toys and loved taking trips to sales to find the next treasure.

Jack is survived by his wife, Nell of Sheldon; daughters: Marsha [redacted] and Cheryl [redacted]; sons: Brian, John, and Keith; 4 step children, [redacted]; 13 grandchildren, 14 step grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 10 step great grandchildren and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alyna; his parents and 3 sisters, Marie Vanden Brink, Johanna Van Aalsburg/Hoffmeyer and Myrna Griffioen; 3 brothers, Gerrit, Arthur and Robert.

LeRoy Henry was born on January 26, 1942, in Hull, the son of Henry Jongetjes and Cora (Post) Jongetjes. The family first lived in Lester, where LeRoy attended kindergarten, before moving to Rock Valley where he attended the public school. As a young man he worked for Trueman Bell and Judson Smith repairing tractors. Following his graduation from high school, he started working as a driver for the Hull Creamery.

On October 19, 1960, he married Audrey Berghorst at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. They made their home in Hull where LeRoy worked for Berghorst House Moving until enlisting in the United States Army in 1966, serving for two years in White Sands, New Mexico. Following his honorable discharge, he drove truck for a few years before buying the Hull Drive Inn. He later worked for Altena Circle Steel until returning to truck driving at Te Slaa Trucking in Hull until his retirement. He had also been a devoted care giver to his wife until her passing on February 3, 2018, in Hull, after more than 57 years of marriage.

Mr. Jongetjes was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church and the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post, both in Hull. He enjoyed tinkering with minor repairs, going for rides, and visiting the Iowa Great Lakes.

Survivors include his two daughters, Leah, and her husband, Marlin Schoonhoven, of Sheldon; and LaRae Bloemendaal, of Sioux Center; five grandchildren, Alex, Tessa, and Joseph Schoonhoven; Angela Bloemendaal, and her fiancé, Tim Spaans; and Miranda Bloemendaal; a sister, Joyce Van Voorst, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; three brothers, Norman Jongetjes, and his wife, Dorothy, of Sioux Falls; Allan Jongetjes, and his friend, Dianne Trotter Gillum, of Frostproof, Florida; and Clayton Jongetjes, and his wife, Sheryl, of Escondido, California; and two sisters-in-law, Anna Vander Well, of San Marcos, California, and Arlene, and her husband, Orville Van't Hul, of Hull.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Jongetjes; a brother, Roger Jongetjes; two brothers-in-law, Gerald Van Voorst and Loren Vander Well; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Alyna and Jack Kleinwolterink.
