ALVIN "BUD" LEE HOOGEVEEN was born on May 6, 1934 to Albert and Jennie (Korthals)
Hoogeveen in Steen, Minnesota where he was raised.
Bud attended school in nearby Hills, Minnesota and later graduated from Hills High
School.
He then went to Lee's Barber College in St. Paul, Minnesota.
He and a friend lived above the college in an apartment.
They survived many a day by scavenging food out of garbage cans to make ends meet!
Upon completion of the program, he returned to Hills and in 1954 purchased the
barbershop in town from Dave Walters.
On June 11, 1957, Bud married Shirley Berghorst at the Christian Reformed Church in Hills. The couple made their home in town and were blessed with seven wonderful children. Bud had an entrepreneurial spirit. In addition to the barbershop, Bud sold cars and operated the laundromat. His pursuit of furthering his education led him to enrolling in night classes for various programs. Following a small engine repair program, Bud began his own business in town. Later in life, Bud eventually closed his barbershop. However, he continued to open his chair up in his garage from time to time to some of his loyal customers and dear friends. In September 2020, Bud and Shirley moved to Bethany Meadows in Brandon, South Dakota. On Thursday, June 17, 2021, Bud passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Sanford Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 87 years, one month and eleven days.
Bud was currently a member of the Reformed Church of Steen. Throughout his life he was active in his community, serving as Fire Chief, member of the Optimists Club and on various church boards and positions. He loved to tinker and was an avid Minnesota sports fan, cheering on the Twins, Vikings and his Golden Gophers. He will be remembered by his family and community for his calm demeanor and patience, seldom raising his voice and as a great teacher and role model to many. Bud would do anything he could for anybody and his Christian values and beliefs guided his words, his actions and his life.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Shirley; five children, Doug (Pam) Hoogeveen of Brandon, Rochelle (Roy) Damstra of Sioux Center, Iowa, Jill Hoogeveen (Rob Dumdie) of Selby, South Dakota, Tamara (Dean) Hoppe of Prior Lake, Minnesota and Scott (Stacie) Hoogeveen of Omaha, Nebraska; eight grandchildren, Alvin, Nickolas, Nicole, Amber, Aric, Noah, Cole and Sophie; four great-grandchildren; two siblings, Art (Carol) Hoogeveen of Prior Lake and Ray (JoAnn) Hoogeveen of Luverne; a sister-in-law, Inez Hoogeveen of LeMars, Iowa, and brother-in-law, John Hup of Luverne; and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas and Jeffrey Hoogeveen; and two siblings, Don Hoogeveen and Alvina Hup.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Shirley Hoogeveen.
She passed away surrounded by family on September 15, 2024, at the Dougherty Hospice
House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
She lived to be 86 years, and two days.
She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Shirley Jean (Berghorst) Hoogeveen was born on September 13, 1938 in Hills, Minnesota to Frank and Sophie (Schouwenburg) Berghorst. She graduated from Hills High School. On June 11, 1957, she was united in marriage to Alvin "Bud" Hoogeveen. To this union, they were blessed with seven children. After her youngest enrolled in school, she began working in the cafeteria at Hills Beaver Creek High School. Many will remember her for her beautiful smile and her chocolate chip cookies. She was Head Food Services Director when she retired. When retirement became boring, she worked a few more years in housekeeping at the Tuff Home in Hills.
In September of 2020, Dad and Mom moved from the family home to Bethany Meadows Assisted Living in Brandon, South Dakota. They resided there until Dad passed away on June 17, 2021. Mom then moved to her own townhome, where she resided until her death. She loved her new home. She decorated at each change of season and for every holiday as she had done in the family home for years and years.
Our mother will forever be remembered for her fun sense of humor, her love of baking and laundry, her love for flowers and jigsaw puzzles, and her love for her family. She truly looked forward to "girls day out" which included pedicures, lunch, and shopping. She was living her best life when she was surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She would never pass up any game offered to her by any of them. As you grow older you realize your best friend is your mom. No matter how much you argue, fight, make up she will never leave you and is the one doing life with you forever.
Grateful for these blessings are her children, Doug (Pam) Hoogeveen of Brandon, South Dakota, Rochelle (Roy) Damstra of Sioux Cener, Iowa, Jill Hoogeveen (Rob Dumdie) of Selby, South Dakota, Tammy (Dean) Hoppe of Prior Lake, Minnesota, and Scott (Stacie) Hoogeveen of Omaha, Nebraska; eight grandchildren, Nicole, Amber, Aric, Alvin (A.J.), Nickolas, Noah, Cole, and Sophie; six great-grandchildren, Ava, Tatum, Isaac, Brooke, Easton, and Presley; and siblings, Mary Hooyer of Wheaton, Illinois, and Jim (Bev) Berghorst of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alvin Hoogeveen; sons, Thomas and Jeffrey Hoogeveen; and parents-in-law.
