Obituary of James Brotherton:
WEST LIBERTY, Iowa-- James Edward "Rusty" Brotherton, 79, died on Sunday, October 30, 2011, at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.

A Memorial Service was held Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at the West Liberty Community Center. Burial with military honors will take place at the Fredonia Cemetery, Fredonia Iowa.

Rusty was born on October 31, 1931, in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of Ronald and Lela Mickey Brotherton.

He was a graduate of West Liberty High School in 1949 as the president of his class. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was a member of an 80 man team of President Harry S. Truman's presidential honor guard from 1949-1953.

He later received his B.A. from UCLA in 1960 and Master of Fine Arts from UCLA in 1961. He later attended the University of Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico.

He was united in marriage to Lucille Pluim of Sioux Center, Iowa, they later divorced.

He was a student all his life; always learning something new.

He was a member of American Legion and was commander, served as Mayor of Tiffin and was a volunteer fireman. He recently was a recipient of a West Liberty Rotary award.

Survivors include two children, Chad Ryan Brotherton of Melbourne, Florida, and Mary Luzette Neaton of Plymouth, Minnesota; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two aunts, Mary Mickey and husband, John, and Dorothy Parson.
