Obituary for Homer Hasselman
Homer Hasselman, 84, of Oskaloosa died Thursday, January 14, 2016, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born Saturday, February 7, 1931, in Mahaska County, the son of Herman and Stavana Westercamp Hasselman. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the Class of 1949. Following school, Homer continued farming the family farm, west of Oskaloosa, with his dad. On June 29, 1950,
Homer was united in marriage to Doretha DeBruin at the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. To this union four children were born, Dennis, Diane, Dean, and Douglas. Homer and Doretha continued to farm west of Oskaloosa until the fall of 1991, when they moved into Oskaloosa. Homer continued to help his son Doug on the farm. He was an active member of the Central Reformed Church where he had served on consistory as a deacon and elder. He was also active in 4-H while his children were involved. He enjoyed collecting and restoring old tractors, going on antique tractor rides, riding his motorcycle, traveling, and cruising with Doretha in their Model T. Homer will be remembered as a loving, caring, and fun: husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa.
He is survived by his wife of over 65 years: Doretha Hasselman of Oskaloosa; four children and their spouses: Dennis and Ann Hasselman of Ottumwa, Diane and David Burkhardt of Charles City, Iowa, Dean and Pat Hasselman of Renton, Washington, and Douglas and Leann Hasselman of Oskaloosa; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law: Wilma DeBruin of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Herman and Harold Hasselman; three brothers-in-law: Larry DeBruin, Ralph DeBruin, and Paul and his wife Francine DeBruin.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 18, 2016, at 1 P.M. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jon Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Open visitation will begin Sunday after 11:30 A.M. and continue until 6 P.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society in Homer’s name.
